In this video, we put 4 different rifle rated plates to the test against M855 Green Tip ammunition. These plates have different compositions, including steel, ceramic, polyethylene, and our very own Flexible Rifle Armor System (FRAS). We conducted the testing in the Safe Life Defense Ballistic Lab, with our CEO Nick Groat overseeing the process.

That’s impressive for a Polyethylene plate to tank an m855 round.

Try M855A1 and M80A1 at 3100 fps . And try a ballistic plate of silicon carbide ceramic front face of 5mm thickness, 15mm of compresssed HWMPE and a 1.5mm grade 5 titanium plate. Wrap the ceramic and PE with 2 sheets or aramid and then cement the titanium behind . Total weight 2.5kg.

I have the Level 3A+ vest with Level 4 plates. Hopefully, I never have to find out if it really works.

6 is the NIJ standard but weve put A TON more into it without issues!

There's a special Composite when laminated to the entire Ballistic Plate will also reduce Spalling Significantly!

Why did u reset the test tool before each measurement but didn't reset it before testing the fras ?

I wondered this as well. I rewatched the video like 40 times between the polyethylene test and the FRAS test. What I determined was that while he is moving the caliper from the poly plate to the FRAS plate, there is (what I believe to be an unintentional) slight of hand where he actually does reset it, but its blocked by the bill of his cap. You can tell this by comparing where the bottom of the caliper is in relation to the "GemRed" logo on the arm of the depth gauge BEFORE each measurement, and how much of the caliper is left at the top of the gauge AFTER each measurement. I even went so far as to look up that exact tool to see images of the measurement markings. Based on that, I believe the end result was accurate, but it would have been nice to see the caliper reset on camera between the poly test and the FRAS test, like he did between the previous tests. It would also be nice to know what each of the competitor plates were rated for, although it's almost pointless if they are still both heavier than the FRAS plate, yet still created deeper impacts into the clay.

Steel is waaay better than any of the others. Longer life, too. All you need to end the spalling issue is duct tape. No, I'm not joking, look it up. The only reason to even bother with lvl. IV armor is if you plan on fighting or defending against someone with armor piercing rounds.

BFD and BFS are actually two different things. The indent in the clay is called a backface signature which is then measured to get your BFD.

I designed a BFT insert (several inserts) that absorbs over 90 percent of BFT from 10ft. away using Handgun Ammo. Unfortunately another Armor Company stole my Samples and chose not to sign an NDA!! Will your Ceramic Plates stop Broad Head Arrows and other Hunting Arrows?

@@SafeLifeDefenseBodyArmor Nick, I had a CHP friend do some testing on my Level 3A Vest (Laminated) behind the vest is my Flexible Trauma Insert. Multiple shots were fired with various calibers from 10ft. Send me your address and I'll mail you a DVD of the testing. I laminated the P.A.C.A. Vest (brand new from the Sheriff 's Office back in 1995) the vest was test shot in 2015. I designed over 10 variations of my Trauma Insert with different Composites (light weight).

Can FRAS take some hits like a ball bat or simple run and gun jumping over obstacles with the wiehght of you're body on top of it and still remain bullet proof? Worried about the ceramic plates busting from impact and not remaining bullet proof.

Whatever works best for you! It does have lower BFD's and a lower price but is substantially heavier and you can run into spalling issues.

@@SafeLifeDefenseBodyArmor I don't want to be knocked out of a fight because a round hits dead center in the solar plexus and deforms enough to knock the wind out of me. Spalling issues are dealt with by the anti-spall coating, if properly applied and thick enough.

At 5 times the cost of Steel, I'll stick with the steel until you cut your prices by about 60 to 70%!!! And before all the internet warriors start commenting about what's your life worth, If you can't afford it then you can't wear it!

I have a few ar500 armor plates without any coatings and just use a roll of gorilla tape on each one to coat one side to take care of the spall. Seems to work really good... I think most of this is just dress up. Im working with a basically non existent budget, so I make do with what I have. Have a good one.

Get what you can! FRAS is for those who expect and demand the best. We would love to bring prices down but they are not cheap to make!

@Dogleg Not all M855 is coates with a green tip. You can see the box and designation at 3:39. This is M855.

They have kevlar sleeves for steel plates to mitigate spall. Mine cost 80 bucks for a pair.

For SHTF I will stick with my steel plates for longevity... if the weight is an issue for you then buddy you have way bigger problems lol if I was part of a team with resources at my disposal I would go for the others but those ceramic and polyethylene can only take maybe 5 rounds at the most and they are done forever... when it comes to a ww3 situation on american soil and our distribution lines are cut and have little resources I would not assume I can get a resupply of sappi plates so like I said at the beginning I'll stick with the steel... many of you shy away from steel because of all the false claims and myths out there about the spawling... which is why you should always make or buy some soft armor inserts to put infront of the plate...
