Blur's Graham Coxon is a songwriter, composer, guitarist, vocalist, painter...a true 21st century renaissance man if there ever was one, and an artist that our own Andy Martin rates as a top influence. Here, Andy sat down with Graham and gathered some sage wisdom on songwriting, production, performance, and bonus: a solid acoustic set.

Graham’s great. I love the fact he’s so honest about himself, his ability and his creativity. He’s been part of a big, important band but you get the impression, if you didn’t know that, that he was just a guy that records records at home. And I like that. Good man

The guitar solo in You’re So Great is my favourite of all time. The whole recording is just phenomenal. It’s all cracks and distant and yearning and that solo comes in and just tears the heart right out of you. I always saw it as the prelude to Coffee and TV. Fuck Coxon is great.

He really is the guitar player who is closest to my heart. His playing doesn’t intimidate me. His style of playing is so approachable, intuitive and unpretentious. And yet so colourful, sonically interesting and at times highly energetic. Like Damon said when Graham left the band: We‘ll need like a dozen musicians to replace him.

Honestly, I only got to know about him recently. The soundtrack of "The End of the F***ing World" was something that really got my attention, and I just thought it was background music in the show. I didn't know that songs like Bus Stop and Walking all day were actual SONGS written by someone called Graham coxon. These 2 songs were enough to make me wanna hear more from him. You're gold, Graham coxon, pure gold.

Graham has always been a big inspiration for myself, as a guitarist. He’s amazing, and I love how down to earth and genuine he is as well. People often don’t realise how much he carried Blur with his riffs and backing vocals, truly an incredible musician and I’m so glad he’s doing well now!

He actually confirmed quite a bit of what I´ve been thinking about his working process. Honestly, I lost sight of Graham for a while and when I heard the soundtrack to TEOTFW, I was like, Whoa, dude now has about a dozen singing voices at hand. Yeah, he´s taking roles as a singer and he did fabulous with it. One thing, though- as much as I love this soundtrack I feel like it wasn´t that particularily well mastered. It appears a bit thin compared to other modern productions. That´s my only point of criticism about that one really. Go Graham!
