Cobra Kai is one of the best series of 2018. As a true fan of the Karate Kid (1984), I was more than happy with the direction they took the franchise. The series managed to stay fresh and relevant by adding more depth to it's characters and blurring the lines between who is the bully and who is the hero. In this video, I analyze and breakdown exactly how they accomplished this, as well as give my predictions for Cobra Kai Season 2.
This video contains some of my personal opinions, so please let me know if you agree or disagree with my points. Also, let me know what you thought of Cobra Kai, and where you think the series will go in Season 2.

@@SuperSymbiote1 come to think of it. Two guys, or girls, or a guy and a girl or so on and so forth, could actually be both having a fight while one bullies the other as a separate action. That would likely muddle the waters around the whole thing, especially as we're very used to hearing trash talk in fights.

I don't care what anyone says, Miguel got a bad rap. Sam blatantly avoided introducing him to her father, then he saw her having a family gathering with Robbie (whom she had never mentioned before), then she didn't answer his messages/calls for an entire day but later showed up at the party WITH Robbie. Any reasonable person would feel betrayed under those circumstances, and it's not surprising that a drunken teenage boy wouldn't handle it in the most mature way. He clearly wasn't "corrupted" until after the incident at the party, indicating that Johnny's training wasn't what led him astray. Rather, it was his inner rage and pain that twisted everything.

Uh, duh, ummmm ... HELLLLOOOOOO, McFLYYYYY ! ! ! ! ! ! ! !! !That's obviously one of the main points of the entire season! Sam was 1 of many victims of Larusso's bullying! Most characters in the movie were directly or indirectly victims of Larusso's "superiority": Johnny, Miguel, Sam, Cole, the female member of the tournament board of directors, the real estate guy, the other business owners whose rent doubled, and on and on. His hate for Johnny which at that point in life was unfounded, petty and immature affected Sam and ruined her relationship with Miguel. He blindly rejected Miguel and welcomed in Robbie (whom he barely knew, but ... hey, he aint Cobra Kai, right? so here's my daughter!) and in effect as such controlled Sam's actions, thoughts and behaviors because he hated Johnny.

Bull dust : johnny turned Miguel into a stalker and into a possessive individual filling his head with snot. As for danny : he ended up being correct anyway about the cobra kai karate group and evidence was with Miguel but, especially with hawk. You would likely do the same thing if you were beaten almost to no life or severe injuries. Danny could have gotten law enforcement agency officers involved after that vicious Halloween evening beating within the original karate kid film but, he didn't want to get the cobra kai karate group into trouble - danny just wanted to left alone - that's what really happened within the original karate kid film plus remember what the leaders of the cobra kai karate group did to him in the third installment of the karate kid movies franchise so basically anyone who had been put through would do with their daughter and / or, son besides, sam larusso tried to give Miguel a second chance by turning up to the tournament and talking to him calmly yet he still stuffed it all up through listening to his idol though, can't blame it all on johnny as he's suffered enough and payed his own share of penance

He basically became the new Johnny. He was good for a bit then something happened and he slowly morphed down the path of revenge. He’s kinda an antihero in that way. Also, I think Johnny realizes at the end that the good guy doesn't always win. Ironically, that's the final lesson Larusso taught Robbie (in the car after the tournament). I think that helps Johnny move on from having lost to Larusso in the tournament and he realizes what is important in life and that he is good enough even if Larusso is the one with the great life.

I think the final episode was a cheap shot against his teching method, it felt like a bit of a straw man argument against it. like the moment where Hawk attacks a guy from behind because he "didn't want to be a pussy" but that doesn't make any sense. A guy like Hawk would see striking a guy from behind as being the pussy move, a sucker punch is not the move of an alpha male (which is how he wants to be seen). All things considered, I liked the series, especially how it made aggression a positive (because it is, like all emotions it's how it's used makes the difference)

As for Robby not liking him just yet they haven't flushed him out enough he jumped into being the good guy too quick he could be still conning everyone. I think Sam will discover this & call her dad out on it Daniel even told his wife that "Not on my watch will Cobra Kai be back in business." I'll bet when Johnny asks Daniel for help to combat Kreese Daniel will say "If you hadn't reopened Cobra Kai none of this would've happened." Again Daniel trying to keep Johnny down so he can remain at the top with Johnny being like "I've got a chance to make something of myself reopening Cobra Kai gave me the chance to make a difference & Miguel was that spark that reignited my flame." "Not to mention I want to help these kids you got everything you ever wanted LaRusso so piss off on top of that I need your help to stop Kreese from turning these kids into real monsters." Must disagree. The real bully IMO in season 1 is LaRusso! He became "rich & famous" if you will and got swollen ego and thought he was better than everyone else. He bullied and manipulated Johnny, Cole (the rival car dealer), Sam, the real estate guy (in his scheme to drive up Johnny's rent), Kyler (even if he was right, he did treat the kid just like he did everyone else), and mostly - although indirectly - Miguel ... by hurting the people close to him like Sam and Johnny. I wouldn't call Robbie a good guy, but he wasn't the villain, either. He did change and grow - he went against his thug friends to protect Larusso's business and he was going to give Johnny a 2nd chance ... until he saw Johnny man-hug Miguel. He also was sympathetic to Sam being grounded and helped her get some time out. And Sam was nothing but a victim throughout the entire movie, first and constantly from her meangirls friends as she was only with them because she feared becoming 1 of their targets/victims, then from Kyler, then from Daniel, and finally from Miguel. Being a victim of bullying so you are scared to use your voice and speak out for yourself is NOT provoking or instigating a conflict. That all falls squarely on Larusso's shoulders because he has not let go of the past any more than Johnny has. And Johnny wants to heal and even tried to get help from Larusso (the bar scene) to do that ... until he found out about Larusso training Robbie (and assumed Larusso knew the relation).

I think pinning a character as the villain I think is missing the point. The "villain" is human ego. The lack of self perspective. It's the thing that every character in this has to struggle against. That was the whole point of Miyagi's teachings, that power without perspective is destined to self destruct, and that it's a fight that everyone has to fight constantly and throughout their lives no matter who you are, where you come from, or what Martial Art you practice.

This is what people don't get, because a lot of fiction doesn't cover it. I was bullied for most of my childhood, and I hated every second of it. I spent every day afraid of getting stomped, and I did everything I could just to avoid my tormentors. I ended up being pretty much terrified of people in general. Here's the thing: every time I get into a position of power, I genuinely struggle not to use it to put people down the exact way I was. I know, crazy right? I of all people should know how awful it is to be made to feel useless. But that's not exactly the way it works. I was terrified of being powerless, I still am. And often in order to feel that power, something inside me wants to put others down. So I'm never in that position of perpetual vulnerability ever again. I can be cruel, sadistic and unfair even to the people I care about the most, because I'm genuinely terrified of even giving them the chance to become my new tormentors. Bullying creates victims, and victims often become new bullies. It's a poison that corrupts everyone it touches. It's something I personally have to stay on guard for every single day. And it's not something you see in media. People like me are held up as survivors, people who have been unjustly tormented by vicious aggressors. But the leader of the biggest gang of bullies I ever met was abused everyday by his mother and father (something I didn't realize until long after I last saw him). Bullies aren't innately evil individuals. They're scared and broken people who just don't want to be what they make everyone else into: a victim. And the solution isn't to beat the shit out of every bully walking the earth. The solution is to stop the cycle of fear and hate.

Of course after watching Cobra Kai, I had to go back and watch the karate kid movies. With all the flashbacks and the focus on mr. Miyagi's teachings, one line in particular stood out from the movies. After miyagi saves Johnny from Kreese (in the parking lot after the tournament), Daniel asks him why he didn't kill Kreese. Mr. Miyagi States something to the effect of "for someone with no forgiveness in their heart, living is worse than death". In season 1 of Cobra Kai, we see that Daniel obviously has no forgiveness in his heart and is going against mr. Miyagi's teachings. I can't help but to think that this line is going to come into play during season 2 and or season 3.

I see what you're saying but I don't entirely agree with respects to Miguel/Aisha; Miguel only ever showed real hostile behavior towards Robby, as any teen (especially if drinking) would if he saw a guy holding hands with his girlfriend. Miguel kept the same group of friends, and showed respect towards others at the tournament except for Robby, who he hated. And no, hitting his injured shoulder wasn't dirty. The yanking of his arm was dirty when he went to help him up was, but the shoulder is in the target area and Robby knew that. Sure, Miguel did become more aggressive due to the teachings of Cobra Kai, but he didn't go off the deep end like Hawk. Same with Aisha, who only became openly hostile to her bully. The real snake in this story I think is Samantha: she stood by and did absolutely nothing as Kyler physically bullied other kids (and even went out with him!) and also did nothing when her "friends" cruelly tormented Aisha- Samantha only turned away from these people when they turned on HER first! Kyler spread the rumor that she gave him a blow job at the theater/insulted her dad and the other girls turned on her when Kyler told them that she thought that she was better than they were. She was still going to continue being their friends, even though they were incredibly cruel towards Aisha- only Aisha forgave Samantha almost immediately, while Samantha didn't forgive Miguel, even though the whole mix up at the beach was an accident. Also Robby belongs in jail.

C'mon let's get serious here - who would you choose in such a scenerio Someone who raised you from a small innocent kid treated you like a king ( what danny and Amanda did to Anthony larusso ) in sam's case like a princess versus someone who struck a friend of your dad's - let's not forget when her own father specifically requested not to congregate with those bullies. You think you can judge sam larusso after what kyler did to her plus if she said something earlier jasmine and moon would have treated her similar This situation is mainly johnny's fault - telling Miguel a doctored story outside the receda mall gotta watch out for the larussos and alpha moves treating girls like crap when robby also had a crush on sam larusso but, think sam likely thought robby was just being friendly so robby is more at fault after sam informed him she had a boyfriend then proceeds to try to fight

@@cndvd I have to say I disagree, I can see a girl getting impressed by exactly that sort of thing (and I have seen it in fact). Hawk's character is obviously exagurated quite a bit, but in a way he reflects the person who loves to be outwardly totally lacking shame and is completely without fear or anxiety in being themselves, and that is something which attracts a lot of women. Perhaps that is an 80s thing, but I love the 80s, I'd rather be in the 80s than the present to be frank. As someone born in the 90s I feel I definitely missed out, I relate to Johnny's character a lot in that I think modern world has many idiotic conventions with people taking certain things too seriously, perhaps we need an injection of the 80s to shake things up? But that's neither here nor there, I love this show (although I think this channel read it wrong), and Hawk was absolutely a pleasure to watch.

I don't think the interaction between Kreese and Johnny will be anything but simple. Martin Kove has said that the Kreese character is motivated by his history of being a Vietnam vet. The Movies tried to delve into this in the 3rd movie but it was so poorly written that it didn't get across. Strike fist, strike hard, no mercy. This is the moto of a defeated vet suffering from PTSD. Kreese will never lose again. Propery written there is a lot of potential for the Kreese character. How he deals with his PTSD is apt even today with our vets. I will be very upset if the writers treat this character as black and white. But I dont think they will.

While I feel you did an excellent job explaining the philosophy behind Cobra Kai's decent into corruption and taking on the role of the bully, I got to disagree with the idea that it was well-developed. It felt as if the shift came sudden and out of left field over the last two episodes of the season while Danny and Johnny's son were sort given an odd moment of redemption despite the moral ambiguity the two had throughout the start of the season. Left and right Danny is going against Johnny, losing the philosophies Miyagi had taught him, and becoming the bully Danny once hated. Rather than continuing down this plot line, the show seemed to make a sudden switch back to the 1984 Karate Kid, with all of a sudden Cobra Kai is the dojo of villains leading up to the tournament and Miyagi-do having the grounded philosophy to oddly paint themselves as the heroes of their own war story. While this could be the point, that the rage fueling the Cobra Kai fighting style could also fuel destructive and villainous behavior as quickly as a wildfire, it still felt like more of a twist to set up the second season rather than a natural progression. The reason I say this is because I'm afraid that the second season will cause Cobra Kai to dissolve as a dojo and meld with Danny and co. to make them the heroes once again. The show did do a good job at showing how the grounded philosophy of Miyagi-do brings forth a calming and wise nature in their students, but at the same time we saw that meeting a problem head on through the philosophies of Cobra Kai could prove to have a benefit to its disciples as well. While the catharsis of beating down those that have wronged you can lead down a violent path as shown to the end of the season, I pray that season 2 doesn't see this nature of feeling the need to kick the shit out of everyone you meet as the ultimate end of taking up Cobra Kai karate. Simply because Cobra Kai is the yin philosophy and Miyagi-do is the yang, this doesn't mean that one nature is superior and you can't have one nature exist without the other. In today's society we boast kindness, light, and passiveness as the end all be all, when at the end of the day you sometimes need to have a certain degree of resilience and strength to able to protect the good in the world when it is threatened. As the philosophy of yin yang shows, you can't have light without a shadow, and I just hope they give Cobra Kai dojo the chance to find their light instead of seeing Miyagi-do as the perfect "good," and sticking to the mark they'd been hitting on moral ambiguity that everyone loved at the start of the show. But as you said, Cobra Kai has been taking us in places we least expect so hopefully I'll be pleasantly wrong about my worry.

Although I don't agree with his actions I believe they stem from a emotional oppression of his own bullying experience. Cobra kai gave him confidence and skills to fight so now when someone brings up an issue of his (lip, bed wetting etc) he feels the power to fight back, not from Johnny Lawrence and his teachings. Another point I have observed is that Kreeses ideologies matched more of what Hawk wanted out of fighting.

I think Johnny stays with Crease throughout season 2 as he continues to struggle with Robbie being Larusso's student (and everything about his relationship with Robbie). I agree though that at some point Johnny will likely pull it together and find the courage to kick Creases arse. At some point, Larusso will have to stop being such a bully and the 2 of them will come together to be friends and Robbie and Johnny will have a relationship finally.

Johnny's not a quitter he'll stay at Cobra Kai because he doesn't want Kreese to corrupt the kids especially Miguel any further he remembered how Miguel's mom didn't want him taking karate but his grandmother intervened & told him to go ahead & do it. It's like Miguel's family saying we're putting our trust in you to do right by our son & grandson. So Johnny will do his best to protect Miguel while trying to rebuild his relationship with his son whom I feel isn't Johnny's kid Robbie is doing things Johnny wouldn't do. My guess is that Johnny's ex cheated on him & got knocked up she knew if Johnny learned the truth he'd leave her so like his own mom Johnny's ex is now looking for a man to take care of her. Unlike Johhny's mom she hasn't hooked herself a rich older sugar daddy I'll bet Robbie's real dad is one of Johhny's old Cobra Kai friends.

I love Kobra kai, its basically "Daddy issues the series": Johnny's abusive stepfather was the reason he seeks for Karate lessons and find a fatherly figure in sensei John Kreese Daniel used to live with his single mother, and Mr Miyagi was the farther he never had. Miguel was in the same situation, he live only with his mother and grandma. Robbie originally worked under Daniel as a way to get into his father nerve. Samantha goes back to Karate as a way to re connect with her father.

I read an article in Ruthless Reviews about how Johnny Lawrence was a misunderstood hero before that video came out and it was a great read. LaRusso was a little geeky kid but still trying to grab the girl. Johnny knocks him tot he ground and then LaRusso punches him which to me seemed a bit harsh. And now for nothing I think Ali loved the boys fighting after her and if we remember part 2 she left Daniel for a college guy so really maybe she was the villain after all. I hope she comes back in the third and we see her as some scumbag lawyer which make a lot of sense of some 75 year old guys trophy wife.

If you're interested in finding out what really happened within the karate kid movies - feel free to check out my unfinished anylys of the karate kid movies within the comments section of the youtube video, daniel is the real bully in the karate kid Yes - allison was sneaky and wanted to get back at danny because of the creepy eye contact and trying to make johnny jealous As for the ruthless reviews bull dust story is not entirely correct for the following reasons 1. Johnny was basically not perfect - johnny admitted he was a ace degenerate after Tommy called him out on it and even bobby advised him to let it go 2. Johnny wasn't in the position of now demanding a now diplomatic solution 3. That's not how a bloke should treat a girl 4. Grabbing the radio and then proceeded to shove the radio into danny's chest just after some extortion and intimidation therefore makes the weapon - giving danny the legal right to defend himself 5. The bloke who produced the ruthless review failed to mention the roundhouse kick to danny's gut 6. There's no such thing as sucker punches in ongoing fights besides, johnny was basically messing and taunting danny 7. Watch the soccer team tryouts again and you will notice that johnny and his cobra kai buddies were likely planning more attacks such as a headlock or further pushing 8. The bike attack was serious - that was no accident as johnny pushed danny twice. The situation was legally classified as, gang stalking, threatening danny telling him to go back to new Jersey equals intimidation and attempted vehiclar homicide plus failing to stop and check on someones welfare after a serious traffic collision which is basically hit and run causing danny to fall flat on his face and was almost paralysed causing danny to lie there from a period of 20 minutes to 2 hours - that was serious 9. When the cobra kai karate group decided to commit some criminally indictable offences which included, gang stalking, violent shaking, aggravated assault and battery with the intent of causing grevious bodily harm, malicious wounding and attempted homicide with that last running kick When myagi downed those cobra kai karate gang masked attackers - he let them be - a courtesy dutch and ruthless reviews chum didn't extend after bobby pleaded for them to stop After that vicious Halloween evening attack danny had the legal right to do almost anything he pleased

You could double check with a reasonable doctor the Halloween evening beating but, it's extremely unlikely that danny would have survived that last running kick as he already was dilarious and almost unconcious

As for allison : look at her after the mentioned creepy eye contact she said something whispering but, I didn't understand as I'm not that good of a lip reader so she decided to pit the pair against each other though, in my opinion : don't think danny meant any harm he was more looking at her with awe . Also : She should have waited to talk to danny somehere else instead of public flirting on the soccer field. At the Halloween evening function she encouraged danny - first she scolds johnny at the beach and then wanted to see johnny get a taste of his own medicine. Even the beach scene didn't go down like the article claimed

Not really, the whole final episode seemed like one big Straw man argument against Johnny's teaching, I guess because the show couldn't end on "aggression is good guys". I don't think Daniel's teaching method could've helped all the other kids. They needed a dose of Johnny's teaching style. Every 'bad' event that happened with Johnny's students was played up a fair bit, more than they should've been. Miguel's final move was rules legal and it's not like it crippled robby for life, Hawk attacking that guy from behind was nothing to do with "being a pussy" and was just inserted as part of the straw man (a real 'alpha male' type wouldn't attack from behind, they'd want to dominate properly). Miguel getting drunk and angry and having an accident is something that happens when people get drunk. And being jealous is a natural reaction to a set of circumstances that make you suspicious. Also really didn't help that Sam acted like she was ashamed of him with her dad.

Hey just a small thing. You say the USSR was "far more immoral than the regime it replaced". That's not even a claim that you'll find in Gulag Archipelago. In that book Solzhenitzyn claims that the problem was that the communists adopted the style of the former imperial regime. That they copied what had gone in the past. Not that they became worse, just that they continued what had gone before. In that hugely biased work,, by a former victim of the NKVD, which is criticised as not being entirely historically accurate, the author does not use as much hyperbole as you have in this video. Something to think about.
@StoryDive
@StoryDive 5 жыл бұрын
@@uralwong799 I've gotten some criticism for this statement and looking back I realize I oversimplified a very complicated issue. When I said the regime that followed was far worse I meant Stalin's regime specifically and was basing that statement simply on the amount of innocent people that were murdered in his name and the amount of people who starved to death due to his reforms. You can argue that the USSR eventually corrected the mistakes of Stalin and did end up much better than under the Tsars, which I get. If could do the video over I would remove that part or use another example more fitting.

Players can "trip up" other players if they were specifically going for the ball to kick it away from the opponent. Daniel was kicking the ball with his right foot, and the Cobras kicked his left leg, without even trying to go for the ball. Pretty obvious. Also, life isn't a video game. When someone gets hurt or killed, they don't get to come back and try again in real life. Put down the controller son.
