The BMW 1 Series is one of the best small family cars you can buy because it’s hugely desirable, good to drive and surprisingly cheap to run.
The only rear-wheel-drive hatch in the class scores with a strong combination of performance, economy and CO2 emissions. It handles well and rides comfortably, too.
Are there any downsides? Overly quick and light steering can make the 1 Series feel slightly nervous at speed. The pedals are offset to the right, so getting comfortable behind the wheel can be tricky.

I went for the F20, pre-facelift version (late November 2014, so it still has that new steering wheel etc.). 116iA was what I could afford with almost all equipment like a bigger navigation screen, a sunroof, M-sport, estoril blue color, upgraded hifi, fabric and alcantara seats, heated steering wheel (Norway is cold.. ok?) etc. LOVE IT! So happy I did not go for the Audi A3 or the Mercedes A-class.. they were not even close to this fun to drive, and they actually felt a lot less stable at higher speeds such as highways.

Bought a BMW 125i M Sports (2016) - loving this car - a brilliant commuter and a great touring car too. The rear space is only adequate for two adults and is tight, but otherwise for two with occasional passengers excellent. Poised on the road - m sports suspension is perfect and the engine is rapidly responsive and versatile. My previous car was a Mazda 3 (SP25) and the difference in quality, refinement and performance is very significant.

@@dauwg99 when I bought it I had to spend £1000 on it. The rear diff seal was leaking, a shock absorber was leaking, exhaust temp sensor and exhaust gas sensor were faulty. Luckily the warranty covered most of it and since the car has been fine. The engine itself is really reliable and if it had been serviced better I don't think it would of even had these problems.

@@hazvlogs838 thanks so much for taking the time to write all that. makes sense. i am thinking about getting one, but am worried about the biodegradeable plastics / rubber. i assume the interior plastics havent started deterioriating, and rubber bushings etc. haven't had to been replaced?

@@kristoffer3000 My response was to the comment that it SOLELY applies to the UK, when in fact it applies to 30% of the world's population! Furthermore it's also the natural side for driving, as the vast majority of people are right handed and have right field dominant vision. More accuracy is required in steering than changing gears (which is outdated in most cars nowadays anyway) and the dominant arm should be used for the steering wheel. It was the left handed Napoleon who changed the rule in Europe at the time of horse-riding soldiers, because he drew his sword with his left arm and wanted everyone to follow. He failed to conquer Britain so they kept to the natural side. Americans do everything backwards (or euphemistically, converse to the British) so no surprise they chose the unnatural side for the sake of being different, just like they destroyed the English language and misspell English words.

I purchased a new BMW 1 in 2013 in Portugal that this 2017 /2018 winter put water in the suitcase and destroyed various electrical systems due to a defect in fence, besides having put in question my safety and my family. The BMW dealer in Portugal, Caetano Retail of V.N.Gaia assumes no liability despite all the revisions being made religiously in the mark and the problem is notoriously a manufacturing defect. I intend to solve the problem according to the premium service with which I have always been accustomed by BMW.

he said 1.6 liter in 120i model .. that is incorrect , 120i has 2.0 liter engine with 180hp

Sebastijan Besedić For 2017 BMW introduced the 2.0 liter, but until then the 120i was a 1.6 liter. The 1.6 liter 120i has one exhaust tip and the 2.0 liter 120i has two, so you can differentiate them by that

Judging from the view at 6:00, I'm assuming this car would not be a great for a family vacation where 3 of the four are 1.85 meters tall (6 feet)? Or would it be ok?

the 120i is actually a 2.0L not 1.6 and so is the 125i. Also he said 116d twice lol

2015 models came with a 1.6 engine , they then moved to the B48 2.0L .

as far as I know (you should google it, I have no time to look it up right now) 116d, 118d and 120d all have the same engine with a different software. So it makes absolute sense to think about chiptuning a 116d instead of buying a 120d. ;)

Get a 114, 116 or 118i, they use the exact same engine, the only difference is a slightly smaller downpipe on the 2 cheaper variants.

Anyone out there who can say what the bmw 120d is like? Getting car soon and was wondering if there is a massive difference between the 116d, 118d, 120d and the 125d. Thanks

+TJB147 I have moved from the 116d (Company car) to the 120d M-sport. I test drove the 125d and in my opinion the speed difference is minimal between the 120d-m sport and the 125d... however I would avoid the 116d because it is quite sluggish.... although the economy is great (getting 60mpg on a run) The trade off in tax, insurance and fuel between the 120 and the 125 in my opinion isn't worth it. 120d is the best of both worlds...cheap to tax and run and is plenty quick enough...faster than VW's Golf GTD..

+Adam Chase I haven't I'm afraid, however I have driven the 2.0 TDI MK7 Golf and I would say it's comfier than the bmw but just a tad boring to drive and sit in. Mine has sat nav but I'm not sure if it's standard or not, I know the business media pack is an optional extra...

+TJB147 The 118d in my opinion is a good ballpark for the 1 Series. It's advertised MPG combined is still around 65-68MPG and it has 150 horse power compared to the 116d which has only 109 I believe (don't quote me exactly). I think the 118d has that little bit more kick every car driver desires I believe, where as the 116d is best if you are buying soley for fuel economy (75-78MPG combined avertised!)

yes. In the uk as well. it took me a while to find it on the uk website. but it is a standard. "Air conditioning, automatic, single-zone". I would have been very surprised if bmw changed it just for the uk market.

the reason why smaller rims are noisier is because of the bigger tyres. More of a tyre wall, more noise.

Fade well it is bmw afterall but i never drove a 1 series. drove a last gen z4 for a while and tht had a light and numb steering so there's that. oh it crashed over bumps like you couldnt imagine, annoying. on a second watch he says it's supple over bumps like a gti, later he said it thumps so not sure what to make of tht. i also sat in newer 3 series leather seats in a dealership and theyr the best car seats i experienced, quality. and liked the whole last gen z4 interior aswell. bmw hits the mark on i6 engine, rwd and quality for me. misses on steering, possibly ride tho doubtful, ride by wire shifter and i really don't like turbo i6 instead of a na.

This review is incorrect 120i is 2.0 litre not 1.6 litre as this guy states - a rather surprising mistake coming from "What Car"!!!

peterweg6 this is the 2016 model with the 1.6L for the 120i you get the 2L in the 125i BUT 2017 they did a revise a made all models have the 2L BUT detune it so it was more efficient for the 120i model saves money rather than Nils multiple engine variants
