Cornwall Blood Bikes (CBB) is very dear to RiderCamTV’s hearts. Both Mark and Toby volunteer their spare time and have been part of CBB for some time now.
As Toby collected a new addition to CBB’s fleet, we did a review about the bike and blood bikes.
If you liked the video, remember to give us a thumbs up as it helps a ton, and don't forget to subscribe too, so you don't miss anything!

Some years ago some other bikes were found to be unstable at higher speeds due to all the weight and the balance of equipment on them. Those bikes were taken off the road and sold off. I suppose BMW have looked at this problem and fixed it by adding extra notional weightings. The problem that BMW faced is that at slow escort speeds the air cooled versions did overheat and they got over that by introducing water cooled versions which have proved even more popular than the air cooled versions.

The noises of a siren are called yelps and wails. Wails are long tones in open traffic. Short peak tones in traffic are yelps. Decades ago that used to be written on siren buttons.

RiderCamTV Can I ask if this is your bike or the organisation’s? I read that most people use their own - does that mean you can have all the livery but still also use it for personal use? I assume the blue lights are only for company bikes? 😄
@RiderCamTV
@RiderCamTV 6 жыл бұрын
In Cornwall the organisation owns them. You would not be able to have the livery or blue lights and sirens on a personal bike as it breaches road legislation. They do use their own bikes for blood work although the national association of blood bikes (NABB) is very keen to remove the use of personal bikes and only use liveried ones. Hope this helps
@RiderCamTV
@RiderCamTV 6 жыл бұрын
It’s the organisations, they do use their own bikes but the national association of blood bikes are moving away from this. Also you can’t have the livery or emergency lights on a private bike as it breaches road legislation etc. Hope this helps :)

Firstly before I get flamed, I think the blood bike volunteers do a great job. I just wonder why in areas away from the major cities they use bikes? A few people I know do blood bike work in the S Yorks area. They work the nights and weekends and I have asked why do you go out in all weathers on probably the most dangerous powered vehicle, a motorcycle, when you could do the same job in a little Fiat Panda and keep dry and safe and arrive within seconds of a motorcycle? None have ever had a "blues and twos" situation, they have to keep to the speed limits, etc., etc. fuel consumption is probably worse than a small car and insurance is probably higher. Flameproofs on, go for it!

Hi Ian, the answer to your question is simply, Cornwall is a deceptive County to look at on a map or atlas. There's only only one real major spinal trunk road through the county, ie the A30. Most other roads between a myriad of small towns are 'small' A roads and B roads and they are actually very busy as car and bike bike ownership is a bigger in Cornwall than you might think. Fine in out of season motoring when the normal population of the County is going about its busines, but the agricultural community's habit of using tractors on the public highway regularly is a nuisance if you're driving about but on bikes you have the advantage. Then in the holiday season the 550 000 local population swells to 5 million , and the reason we use BMW's is because they can cover huge mileages, and taking detours to get between jobs becomes a breeze on a bike and the extra mileage can be covered easily. In a County like Cornwall the hospitals are also quite spread out. Smaller capacity motorcycles would not stand up to being taken up the M5 motorway to our exchange point with other blood bike groups three times a night as has happened on some occasions. The M5 is 130 miles away from our furthest west hospital. Blood Bike riding is not about nipping in and out of traffic as fast as you possibly can to get from A to B, it is about riding smoothly, quickly, up to the speed limits , in the safest way ensure safe transit of the items beings carried. It is also a Blood Bikes aim to promote motorcycling in a positive light and to encourage safe riding and rider development with various training organisations.

How long do you have to be riding before you can join? I assume there is a pre training talk and information time. as don't want to waste time and money training if it isn't right for you.
@RiderCamTV
@RiderCamTV Жыл бұрын
each blood bike charity is different but all will come with an induction of some sort and some training. You need to be an advanced rider to rider for most of them but check with your local charity to see about the length of time you have to have ridden before applying. You won't be wasting their time and at least you will know.

Hi, does the rider supply the bike? if so can older other models still be used or are there strict limitations on what can be used?
@RiderCamTV
@RiderCamTV 7 жыл бұрын
+Keith Allen our group like most have fleet bikes maintained and supplied by the charity but as the geography of our county is so large at present volunteers can use their bikes for most jobs. For some blood jobs the fleet bike has to be used as there are strict guidelines for the securing of blood and breast milk boxes etc. But for samples and equipment volunteers owns bikes can be used providing they can secure items in top boxes or panniers etc :)

I have ridden ST1100's and ST1300's and I find the mirrors to only be a problem when I have gear strapped to the back seat. Otherwise, the mirrors view the narrowest part of a rider's body and arms and shoulders do not get in the way.

Great job and a great service, but one thing that I don't get is as it's run by charity funding why use the most expensive high maintenance machines out there £17k? when you could get 2 or 3 deuvilles which would do the same job and be more reliable and cheaper on tyres and fuel . you 've got to keep to the speed limits right?.
@RiderCamTV
@RiderCamTV 7 жыл бұрын
+Robert Bates thanks matey. In cornwall we haven't got new bikes and have second hand bikes, usually ex demonstrators or ex police bikes that keep the cost down. The bmw's we use are tried and tested by emergency services around the globe for reliability and functionality and work really well. For us the other things about buying brand new bikes is that it puts the insurance sky high as insuring for all riders on a 17k bike is extortionate and as we operate totally on donations from the public etc it's really important to ensure we use that money in a sensible way. It's not to say that BMW's will always be the right bikes as we are always looking at different options. As for the high maintenance bikes, when a bike does high high mileage the maintenance is always high as it's constantly being serviced and checked to ensure rider safety :)

It’s not only motos - in very cold weather the blood needs more protection and anyway it’s not safe to be riding when icy - so car drivers welcome as blood runners, and in really foul weather we have a list of 4WD drivers. And even if you’re not a driver, controllers are always needed, working from home on the phone.

Who did you order your pre-cut reflective graphics from? Very sharp and tidy.

Any chance of finding out who provided the graphic to the police? It seems that since the colors are red/yellow, someone made them specifically for Blood Bikes. Cheers.

I always understood that whilst its now ok having blue lights showing to the front it illegal to have flashing blue lights showing at all. Also I was told off many years ago for having a variable horn sound as it could be mistaken for an emergency vehicle I suppose. As both these things are available on an ex police bile they are usually removed before sale to the general public. Are they now legal or it that there is a special and lawful dispensation for blood bikers ie can you use them as of a norm. Plus some riders might presume that you can legally exceed the speed limits and breaking other laws and I question if that is the case. Perhaps you can enlighten us.

@@markholroyd5365 Good but when I was in the police service the policy was that old bikes were never re sold with any of those attachments and it appears that policy may have changed. I know that then the police would not allow the resale of their bikes with sirens or flashing blue lights etc.and to me that should still be the case.

judgedredd49 I’m afraid I cannot comment on that however if we (CBB) sell our bikes all sirens and lights are removed.

Can’t you get a 2010 or so with financing options? I see a ton of them available in the UK for about £130 a month which is not bad at all even for a blue collar wage. Forget the new stuff and straight up purchasing, that’s for retirees and millionaires lol

I must ask the question Why only advanced riders qualify for riding blood bikes. In my lifetime and that's some 55 years of actually riding and millions of miles I have ridden with advanced police officers off duty as I was in the service myself and found that they are as different as chalk and cheese. Some were sound as a pound but some were definitely head the ball. The same in respect of civilians that I have ridden with or known . I wouldn't trust some of them on a 50cc bike let alone a 1000cc or more and with maybe 150 to 200 bhp at their wrists. Some civvies I knew have undertaken the advanced course for definitely cudos and cheaper insurances for life and not for any of the right reasons That is safety. One I knew passed the assessment some 7 years ago and is not required to undertake any more testing for life to retain this qualification as an advanced rider and I know he did it for the cudos and lower insurance premiums. He became a member of IAM paying annual subs but as that negated any reduction of insurance premiums he stopped being a member!!! So I and other friends of mine no longer ride with them as they are just idiots just waiting for a collision to happen. It's easy to say that my statement is sour grapes if you want but I know that I am a safer rider than some others that I know are Advanced riders. Don't we all know someone who is a nutter on a bike but a qualified nutter and benefiting ?

@@markholroyd5365 Sorry mark but it isn't. Anyone can use their vehicles for charitable [ social ]purposes all they need to do is get a letter from their insurers. Providing there is no payment or reward they will be covered. I have this cover on both my vehicles my bike and my car.
