A battery reset on a BMW is used to reset a computer also called a control moduule that may be malfunctioning. A common component that can lock up is the TCU or telephone control unit. Peforming a battery reset can sometimes recover the module. Also describes some symptoms relating to a battery problem.

Hey man thanks for the video I had a question though I got a 2001 bmw x5 and just had a new battery and alternator put In but now these 3 symbols stay on in the dash now and i read the user manual and it says it has something to do with hydraulic brake system it also said if I see these 3 symbols pop up and stay on all the time that I should not drive agressive and not push on the brake hard and so forth but yet brakes feel just fine and no sound of wear on brake pads or anything , just thought I would try and ask you, seem like you know what your doing

It depends on the situation. If you have a vehicle with active steering the calibration may be needed or often just a drive can reset the light. If not then about 1 hour labor to run the calibration.

Hey so my 2001 bmw 325i e46 has phenomenal air conditioning but hot air is blowing on my feet. I was told to hard boot it found your video and I'm about to try the hard boot. But have u herd of the issue I'm having and do u kno how to it without going to a shop?

That is very true. I have often found codes present with no warning. The way to determine if they need to be addressed is to look at how many times the fault occured. Thanks for the comment :)

my BMW e90 had a radiator problem so it was off the road for a couple months. my battery drained and I jumped it from the front but it doesn't seem to be charging well enough, it has been having weak starts and yesterday it wouldn't start at all from the gas station, I had to ask someone to jump me again...what could be the problem?

Hello David, Correct. You will need to do the same procedure when you disconnect the battery. Better to be safe though when working around any airbag system component.

Excellent. I didn't realize that turning the steering wheel will reset the 4x4 and brake warning lights! I just reconnected the battery and was wondering how to reset these lights.

Hello, This sounds like an alternator problem but often the alternator failing can lead to the battery failing as well. There is also a recall out that may apply to your BMW for a power cable to the fuse panel.

Thanks for the vid. My active steering on my 2001 325CI is off thanks to Pep Boys (NEVER AGAIN). Will the reset correct the active steering code? I've gotten a alignment but the car still feels like it's sliding when I make a turn.

I recently brought my 2006 325i into a BMW service department to get the inspection sticker replaced. Since then, my car no longer starts. I can jump start the car, but the moment I shut the engine off, I can't restart it again. Do I need to replace the battery? Did someone from service screw something up?

@AskTheCarExperts I picked up an 06 330i a couple months ago, for the first week or two I was messing around with my personal settings menu (non-iDrive) and now they're just gone. I still have the option to change time/measurements settings but my personal settings (lock and key menu) is completely gone. I've tried getting to it with the car on in park, car off and just ignition on, using my other key everything. Ever heard of this? No one seems to have an answer for me.

Hello, I have recently been getting Airbag warning lights sporadically when someone sat in the passenger seat and now consistently without anyone in seat. There is a recall on 06 E91 for airbag sensor mat and the dealer confirmed the seat mat was defective, however, car serial number not within recall ! I have also been noting a slower cranking start in A.M, it is fine the rest of the day, battery has never been replaced. Assumed that it needs a new battery but have not seen battery warning light yet on panel. Could these be related, possibly to IBS? many thanks for your thoughts.Roger

Hello Juan, If you use the same type and rating battery you do not need to visit the dealer. This would only be to register a new battery. If you change the battery type from a lead acid to an AGM glass mat battery then the dealer would need to program the vehicle so the charging strategy is different for the new battery. Although I know of people that have not had the programming and did not have any issues. Hope this helps.

Hey great video i have 01 330xi and am having some problems with service engine light when i first purchased the car it came without an inspection sticker and when i went to inspection station they said computer wasnt ready i had to do a drive cycle so i did light came on i fixed problem and light went off came back on and then went back off i brought it to inspection station again light was off they turnd car off and on agin light came on then went off again and again they said computer wasnt ready please help is there something wrong with my computer thank you

Hello, Check the connection for the BST battery safety terminal on the positive side. It may be loose or the bridge was damaged during the battery replacement. The connector end may need to be replaced if the bridge is damaged. See my video on replacing the battery on an E90. I think I go over the bridge and connector issue.

This may be a coil failing, VANOS solenoids, or the VVT sensor may have oil in it. If you have a clogged cat usually you will have fault codes for this or for catalytic converter conversion.

I carryed out a battery reset after seeing your video, once reconected and driven the time display needed reseting every time the ignition was switched off and once or twice a battery symble came on the display, I did a gogle and all i could find was posts saying that my battery is failing and a new one needed codeing in to the enngine ECU etc. Thinking to myself that i haven't had any problems with the battery before the rest i carryed out another reset with the IBS blue plug disconected, I reconected the IBS after putting the earth lead back on, time display only needed setting once and i've had no other issues regarding the battery. Hope this helps some one out it worked for me

Is this the same procedure that needs to be done once you replace your old battery for a new one? I've been reading about the types of batteries you can use and also the steps that need to be taken to do it right, and most of them say that a dealer reset is necessary. I want to avoid the cost of that reset and I wonder if this is that specific step. Thanks.

The best thing will be to have the code scanned. It is rare for the airbag light to come on due to a battery issue. Occasionally if the battery was very low you may get a code. The most common failure is the passenger seat mat.

This could still be a bad bulb or a bulb that is hard to find. Make sure to check the parking lights as well.

Unfortunately not. You can only clear an airbag warning light with a special airbag scan tool or a scan tool with airbag capability.

i have 93B2 code on my E90 330i.it's been there for half year. is this because i got hit on the back(about one year ago)? and why i didn't have any code right after that accident? the "eye" on my battery is dark now.(put in about one year ago.) is this all because of the 93B2?

Are you trying to pair a phone to your vehicle? Do you have an SOS button near the upper lights? Your vehicle may not be equipped with a telephone control unit. The button was on all steering wheels even if it does not have the option.

Registering the battery tells the vehicle the battery was replaced. This will not prevent starting if you replace the battery with out this step. If you are at the dealer they may see a code that says the battery is aged due to the vehicle not knowing the battery was replaced but it will not effect starting or charging.

Good video. I had battery change and automatic turn signal return stopped working. Cannot find any info on this but I suspect due to battery change. Anyone suggest a fix? Reboot?

I have seen this occur. You may need to have a specific test plan run with the BMW tester. You can try to disconnect the negative battery again for 30 minutes. Reconnect and then cycle the key on for 30 seconds but do not start. Then cycle off for 30 seconds. Repeat a second time and then try the start again with a test drive.

Hi, I have an '06 E61 TCU that refuses to add another phone. (Says "No entries available" and won't displace first entry with another. Phones (tried 3, incl. early Nokia 6310i) all report BMW rejected pairing request. Tried the Battery Reset but the only thing it lost was the time (e.g. all radio stations were still remembered, including last one) If you have any ideas, I'd be most grateful. Thanks

Hi my e90 335i battery is completely dead. It's output is only 11.3v. I've tried to jump start it but can't get it to turn over. If I try to replace the battery myself do I have to register the new battery? Thanks...

Hello Calvin, This could be quite a few things on a vehicle that has sat for so long. The most common cause of only the instrument panel ligts coming on and off is a problem with the ELV electronic steering lock. This can prevent starting. It could be the starter is siezed as well, you would have to check for power to the starter solenoid. Most likely it will need some hands on diagnosis.

Quick question ....my battery was disconnected and taken out to recharge. Once put back in the same battery the same warning lights appear like in the video. Issue is my car doesn't stay on long after starting and shuts off immediately... Any Solutions to assist me with?

Hello Jermaine, This model was not equipped with active steering. The E46 would use a conventional rack and pinion. But if your alignment is off it can cause it to scrub or slide and cause the ABS warning to come on. If they did an alignment incorrectly your tires can wear irregular and fail prematurely.

Presently it is unpluged, car run fine but, I need to get one. Bought one on ebay for about US45. but it never worked well on the car. Where car I get a good one (oem) brand. Thanx

Hi! I have a 2007 328xi sedan and the radio (Bmw Professional Cd) non-nav, is stuck on 'Telephone Active'. Only the power button for the radio responds to on/off. None of the other buttons respond. I just purchased the vehicle second-hand. I have had the radio unit and amplifiers swapped out with other second-hand units and they operate but with no sound. I have put the original radio back in with the above issue still present. There were coins inside the radio unit per the mechanic. Beyond that, he's stumped? Any advice? Thanks in advance!

Hi, thanks for getting back to me! I asked ny mechanic per your advice, but my 2007 doesn't actually have a TCU/telephone control unit to disconnect. The overhead SOS function also doesn't exist in my 328xi. Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks!

My 2012 Activehybrid 7 wont go in park .. I have to keep the emergency brake up when I go anywhere & my doors won’t close... I tried the battery reset for half an hour but I didn’t do the steering wheel turning thing.. Does that make a difference?

Hello, I am sorry to hear a battery reset did not work. The steering wheel turning is only to calibrate the steering angle sensor on some vehicles and would not change the outcome. Your active 7 is a very complicated vehicle. You will need a scan to see what may be preventing the vehicle from going into park. This is not a common failure. I feel hands on diagnosis will be valuable in finding the root cause.

Check your battery connections. I would go as far as removing and reinstalling the connections. Then recheck. If your vehicle has an IBS or intelligent battery sensor you will see another wire coming off the negative cable. If it does have this sensor I have seen this sensor cause this reset. The fix is to replace the negative cable which has the IBS built in. I hope this helps.

Just had battery replaced, now CD player not playing sound (but playing) and fm radio stations no longer transmitting clearly (previous presets not working, getting one or two clearly rest static). Tried this power down battery reset. Still no luck, ideas?

Hello Peter, I am sorry to hear you have this odd problem after replacing your battery. It should not have caused any issues with the radio. Did you try to disconnect for a half hour? Did you have any previous symptoms that may have led up to this?

Very helpful.....I have BMW 328ix that wouldn't start..It was very cold weather -4° ....We tried to jump it, but it wouldn't turn over...We left battery charger on it overnight, and the next day, in much warmer weather, it started. The only thing is, windows aren't working, no turn signals, no flashers, and no high beams....I'm going to try this re-set procedure, and see how it goes...

Hello Simo, The battery replacement should not have effected the radio. Not sure why your aux is missing. Usually just scrolling through mode will get you to aux. Can you check and let me know. Also can you give me more information about your vehicle...year make model VIN. Thanks.

Hi there, basically changed my tyres but tyres were not inflating properly so the tyre pressure warning light came up, now to reset it I don’t have the reset or init option on the dashboard. Will a battery reset could potentially help bring them back? As I had a reset option before but it’s disappeared for some reason

Hello, I have seen some odd issues with 3 series E90 not resetting. I would definitely try a battery reset to see if the reset option comes back. With vehicles with out I Drive the option to reset the tires is done using the BC button on the stalk. Press and hold once on the TPM reset until a check mark appears and then test drive the vehicle to reset. Now if you are getting a tire pressure malfunction warning this is a failure in the system or a sensor in the tire which would need to be diagnosed. Please remember to subscribe, Thank you!

Hello, back again. Performed this battery reset steps but still no change in the dashboard. Reset or init option is still missing. My guess is when I went to Halfords and changed the battery, they must have done something? Since before that I remember I used to have those options

Strange problem. Check your battery. It sounds like you have a voltage drop problem. Make sure the negative and positive cable is tight and not loose.

Good question! If you use an OBD battery saver it will prevent the battery reset from fully resetting all the computers.

Great video guys. I wasn't aware of having to program the new battery and wonder if this is the source of my car's issues. Here's my long story: We have an extra car, a 2006 325i E90, that we parked for about 9 months after a broken belt. I finally got around to replacing the belt, then the battery, I cleaned the engine with a degreaser and water. It ran fine after cleaning the engine. Then I had it off for about 6 weeks and the new battery went dead. I recharged the battery, and now cannot get it to crank over. It seems like the starter is not getting power on the white cable that energizes the solenoid. The large cable at the starter is getting 12 volts. Hope someone can help. Thank you in advance for your help.

Hello Roldan, Are you able to check the white wire to the starter with a test light while someone presses the start stop button to see if the test light will light up good and bright? This may be a bad starter which is quite common. You should also take a look at the engine ground. They can get corroded and also cause a no crank. I plan on making a video on how to diagnose a starter on a BMW but have not yet had the chance. I have some great troubleshooting tips. Let me know what you find.

Hello, First let is sit overnight again and often the light will then remain off unless there is still an issue draining the battery. In that case the warning will still come on and you will need a parasitic draw test.

+youngspianos1 Hello, On some BMW's this is more critical than others. On an E90 3 series I do not feel it is fully needed. The dealer would be registering a new battery so the vehicle can store it as a log. BMW states it may effect how the battery is charged over time if not registered but I have had many people with no issues even though they never registered the battery.

+AskTheCarExperts ...Thanks for reply....its E92 and all thats happening is that clock needs resetting every 3/4 weeks.BM dealer checked car out and said battery is ok but because the mileage is so low its losing charge a little to the point where the clock loses its time setting.It is annoying to have to set the clock,but battery is as old as the car (7years) so I guess he's right with the diagnosis.I will put new battery in (from BM dealer)so it will be the same spec and from what I've read and what you say,the car wont know any differance.)so I will not get it registered.Probably will get the same issue a year or two down the road once the battery gets a little older and maybe wont hold its charge as when it was new.... Thanks for your help..you do great work, much appreciated by us all I'm pretty sure.

+youngspianos1 Hello, I would replace the battery but if you still have the same problem you will need to replace the IBS or intelligent battery sensor (which is the negative cable). I have seen this sensor cause the clock to reset when the battery is good. Best wishes!
