BMW e90 330d m57n2 head rebuild after failed/worn valve guides on exhaust side.
Car has done 128k miles and had full service history
Exhaust valve guides replaced
Top intake ports, exhaust ports, exhaust manifold ported
New Valve seals, Valve seats and valves cut
About 15 hours to do full job (excluding changing valve guides) very slow process
Engine build and start up in next video

Hi,good job,what valve springs you use,some people use from 1.8t inlet vw or audi its same size

Hello Mine are stock springs, Yes I heard 1.8t springs are used as upgrade for exhaust valves but unsure what ones exactly. Mine is on the limit on 2.5bar as valve float is limiting factor

does that micro cracks near glow plug ports affect reliability ?

Depends on how bad they are , obviously ideally no cracks is best.

Hats off! Why You don't want replace intake valves to bigger ones from 535d (nearly 28mm comparing to 26mm stock). Anyway, great work. Any gains on dyno?

Thanks, I didn’t do a research for intake valves, also should have replaced exhaust valve springs . It’s hard to say, you’d need 2 identical setups to be sure, anyway im happy with the my setup now. It’s around 420bhp and 900nm and barley any smoke. Exhaust temps also not going over 760*c on full blast

What company fitted the valve guides for you and how did they charge you?

I wouldn’t recommend using same company, they charged me £280 I believe or around that figure

Yes it was, oil was going slowly down to the exhaust

I have leak valves on my head, wich made my engine smoke a litle whitish, unburn diesel, all the people that i talk said that is because of the worn valve guides,common issue on m57 with over 200k km. Did you know that? On my engine i can hear on the intake manifold losing compression in at least 1 cylinder, can run like that for know 3 years, i feel litle low in power on the low end.

Thanks for your comment yea it sounds like we are not the only ones with same issue, i was surprised when guy that fitted new valve guides said that is common issue. mine had just done 200k km also!

I wouldn't day its common I know many people that have over 300k km with no valve leaks I know someone with 530k km completely stock motor that has been tuned used for tuning tests and abused since 250k km with no issues

Unsure, only way to test it to have two identical setups minus the head work. But it should flow better as top ports are tiny and exhaust ports are matched to manifold. It’s just up to the turbo to do the rest.

@Pork N Cheese donno, I’ve made 3” turbo back exhaust, that is quieter than what i had before. Just been chasing bad drone between 2k-2.5k rpm . Doing my head in.

Don’t see why not, it’s more or less same head just don’t over do it. Keep top intake ports same shape so they still swirl air just enlarge a bit.

How do you actually know but you haven't reduced torque or reduced velocity of the flow??? Did you even flow the port after doing it to see the results? 400 hp? I think people watching this video need to realize taking a grinding wheel two a head is all too easy, but doing it correctly takes a lot more!

It was an experiment to be honest, it’s all done on budget as well . I kept the shape of top ports to maintain factory design to help swirl of air so it still burns efficiently,I believe it works great. Still got factory mpg and it’s smoke less , produces close to 900nm and 410bhp , in comparison with other stage 3 cars it’s definitely doing better. And it’s on stock valve springs on 2.5bar of boost. Turbo lag is almost same as stock car

it doesnt give you anything. Stock m57n2 can give 500hp wi thout all this works !

If the car can make 500hp with stock head it doesn’t mean it can’t make more with it being ported

A ported head done propperly will allways flow better. Even though it will do upwards of 600HP on stock internals a port will flow better and require less boost to reach the same power levels. and once you start to reach that Platou of power a ported heaad will allow you to get a little bit more. throw on supporting hardware and you have way more to go.

That is wrong. Better flow coefficient means you get more air through at any pressure. that means you have more air in the combustion chamber at the same boost levels. It may be not necessary to do it but you will definitly get gains if done properly.

Yes with big enough turbo stock head gonna give you 500hp, this ported one it can however gonna give you better flow and power with same size turbo and less EGT. It just work more effeciency. If I remove my head I'd the same.
