Ive owned 2 of these in past 6 years and these are the things id consider when buying this car Things that are a must in my opinion Heated seats Harmon kardon sound system Electric seats Electric mirrors Pro nav M sport+ braking system (the one that supports the 19 inch alloys) Adaptive suspension (rare but a must in my opinion) Get a 65 plate or higher as it comes with the newer led lights that look way better than the older in my opinion or newer Adaptive led lights are even better. If want vented and groved performance brake disks just know they have significantly more wind noise to them due to the holes in the discs compared to the standard disks without the holes but eventually you get used to it. Removing the dpf and egr is a must in this car doing that will give you so much more reliability in the long term however you need to go to a place that know what they are doing. You will also need to get it tuned after the removal. Costs around £350-£500 for removal and tune usually Id also consider when getting this car to get 4 brand new tyres all the same brand and and getting the tracking done by a specialist that does 4 wheel drive cars. Will help with mpg also the feel of the car and less wear on other car parts. Id reccomend a gearbox service on this car also if your milage is above 60k as it will make your gearchanges super smooth and it will eliminate the jerk you get in these cars when you come to a stop. Lastly id change the oil and oil filter along with the air filter every 5k instead of 10k might cost alittle more however its not too hard to do yourself if you have the time and space. My current 335d is on 160k milage and still going strong

I have a 335d Xdrive on a 67 plate. done 16k miles in 12 months, averaging 39mpg. Also enjoying the car. It will do 165mph INDIATED on in private track obviously. It hits 60 in 4.6secs. Its a weapon! I love it!

Glad you’re liking yours. I think the brakes are probably ok, they just didn’t stay as consistent on mine as our Mercedes’ have always been, the discs tend to corrode more so I’m thinking the quality just isn’t as good. Had a 16 plate f30 335d for 5 years now. As many say here, I cannot find anything to replace it with. A long drive will give over 50 mpg but it drops to 12 on track 😊 Faults, the egr valve recall and they had it so long waiting for parts they said the discs had corroded and replaced the discs and pads for free. Biggest issue I have is tyre noise on some surfaces and I'm running ps4s. Better on the winter 18's I use Services at the dealer are £150 for minor and £350 for major services. You don't need the emissions and other checks they will try and charge you for, that's part of the mot and you can reset it on the idrive yourself

That’s just reminded me they forgot to tighten the air intake clamp when they did the EGR, although better than having a ‘burny’ 3 series! I think you’re right about the extra check, I paid it last time and they didn’t spot that the washer jets had blocked up, waste of money I think and probably a less comprehensive check than I’d regularly do myself.

Got one of these on a 67 reg, now on a private plate. In Mineral Grey colour. Quite a basic spec but I plan to add things to it. I've already upgraded the business nav non-touch 6.5 inch screen to 8.8 inch touch screen (OEM part from BMW not an android screen) and added fullscreen CarPlay. Mine only has the manual seats, no reverse camera, no adaptive cruise control, no heated steering wheel or heated seats but I plan to retrofit heated seats once I've sorted other things out. It does have standard cruise control and parking sensors of course. I have absolute babied the car since I got it and it's had a full service, major service and 3 oil changes in the 30,000 miles or 15 months I've owned it. In the next week it's going for another oil service and the following week a walnut blast, replacement glow plugs are on order as the previous owner was a right cheapskate and hardly maintained it at all (they had fitted tyres without TPMS sensors on runflat tyres - which is actually a legal requirement. I had these sensors bought and added at my cost, they hadn't bothered to take it for it's EGR outstanding recall either).

Sounds like a great project car! I have taken my 65 reg 335d F31 from the UK to Germany and I will now upgrade it a bit - e.g. radar cruise control. Will be lots of fun - won‘t sell this one. New BMWs just aren‘t the same - the F31 is one of the last true classic BMWs in my view, and the 335d is a great package.

I love mine just a shame it's costing me a fortune to run it... I've spent in excess of £500 in diesel in the last 3 weeks! That said I do usually cover 1800 - 2000 miles per month.... it's a thirsty beast. Need to get mine de-coked with a walnut blast as it's now covered 92,200 miles and to my knowledge it's never had one. (I've had it for 16 months and since the 59,000 mile mark). I keep toying with the idea of replacing it with an electric car, something like a Polestar 2 or a Tesla, the lease would only cost perhaps £100-£200 more than the monthly car payment anyway but I'd save hundreds each month on fuel.... but I full well know if I replaced it with an electric car I'd regret it. @@thereallotharmatthae

Yes I loved my old c class, have looked at the C43 and even the C63 which is now getting very good value for money, as possible replacements. Also really like the looks of the latest C class and they seem to come with everything on the higher specs, no nonsense about charging extra for heated seats, they seem expensive in comparison until you spec the bmw to be equivalent. I haven’t heard of autoguard so will have a look. The BMW warranty seems reasonable but I’ve never had to use it, touch wood, and of course until you do they’re all a waste of money I suppose :). Dimming wing mirrors...adaptive xenons... I have park assist but never used it. I'm missing heated seats and heads up display and the powered bootlid. I am also missing 360 camera view which would have been nice. I don't have adaptive cruise either or lane keep.. if I was swapping to something else I'd need to be changing my life and need a bigger car or something. I brought 4 decent sized passengers on a long journey who were still shocked by the acceleration so I don't think the weight of the car is too much outside of really twisty roads where its still fine but hard to predict how much grip you have before it lets go. Looking to swap my Cupra 4drive petrol estate (300bhp), I test drove an F30 335d XDrive (310bhp) which, on paper, was just as fast but more economical. However, in reality I was underwhelmed by it's performance. Standalone it was a cracking car, but regardless of the quoted figures, it didn't feel as fast off the line, so I didn't make the move. Later, I looked at a Volvo V60 D6 AWD Plug-In Hybrid (285bhp) which was supposedly only 1 second slower to 60 with a ridiculous claimed 150mpg, but again I was unbelievably disappointed - it felt like an 8 second car, not a 5.8 second car, and real world mpg is reportedly 50-70mpg if driven extra carefully, barely better than the BMW. I sold the Cupra in the end while the market was still high, and moved away from a performance car, but now the itch has returned and I'm again looking at an F31 335d XDrive estate with a view of mapping it to 400bhp. I briefly considered a Jaguar iPace, but given the stories about fires and stuck throttles, you won't ever see me in a fully electric car, so the BMW appears to be the best option all round for decent enough economy, and power to overtake when you need it.

@thatcarnutsguy

I’ve often thought that about a RWD 330d. Most of the time it’d have enough traction anyway and it would be a more honest drivetrain and steering set up in the spec you suggest. All wheels driven does give a zero thinking effort ability to drive round anyone on a wet day which is handy on the misery of a wet commute, but yeah I think there’s a lot that would be more satisfying without that complexity and some of its compromises!

@@thatcarnutsguy I bought my 335d GT and love it. It's not as slick as proper F30 but the gaping boot and extra legroom is a winning combination for family life. Two trips to the DIY store this week and still a 5 second 0-60 time is everything I need. It's still a little thirsty but driving slowly helps pull that back. The nice thing about a fast car with torque driven slowly is that the power is always on tap. In a normal car then getting speed back takes time so I actually drive more quickly in a less powerful car.

Thanks for your review Carnuts Guy. As well as steering and noise differences, how is the subjective comfort of the PS4 tyres compared to the RFTs, at low & fast speeds, ripples, spd humps, etc.? I'm speculating the run-flats on 18s could like going to 19s with normal tyres, maybe?? I had the F31 Touring 335dx MSport twice on short lease - a 2015 one that had the issue of the heater-a/c coming-on everytime i started-up the car not matter the state it was in when i switched it off, also it's halogen headlights were awful! Poor brightness and poor reach at speeds! However it was a really blinging white one with Oyster interior! When the 18mth lease ended i got another one for almost 2yr - 66-plate LCI Estoril Blue with Saddle Brown interior looked perfect, no probs with the A/C unit here i found it wore-out it's front tyres seemingly very quickly after about 15K miles - even wear - whereas the rears had loads left even after some Sport+ rear-out fun! LED highlights were also an improvement. I had to give it back as at the time i couldn't afford the final payment, but i wish i had but it on a longer lease with maintenance and at the end i could've afforded the final payment as the deal at the time was fantastic, the last before the tax change made it unaffordable! For a diesel the mpg looks on the low-side but for the performance a petrol couldn't compete and the bags of torque made it eminently drivable for long & short distances - i tried 300bhp petrols but they just felt shouty & lacking in comparison. Took the white one London to Scotland & back and the blue everywhere else - perfect. SE suspension was rolling on slip-roads and the like but on bumpy B-roads it was perfect. However i was getting lower back pain after a while, but after i think it may've been due to the tilt i had the seat at. Run-flats a little hard at town speeds. If i could've chosen again i would've added electric seats (manual height adjust was awkward!), upgraded speakers (base spec was too weak!) and lumbar support. I had specced both heated seats and heated steering wheel on both.
@rimmerblues1586
@rimmerblues1586 2 жыл бұрын
Also i'd like to add that apparantly the "adaptive" suspension is rubbish - too stiff in Sport mode and too soft in Comfort. With my now 220i Active Tourer with the on-off "adaptive" suspension i can tell you that it's a similar system aand it is indeed as described above and after 3 years it has become seriously unstable! So u didn't miss-out on adaptive, the base suspension is actually great even if i softens-up over time - much easier to change the passive dampers out to Bilsteins or Konis than swap-out unloved adaptives.
@thatcarnutsguy
@thatcarnutsguy 2 жыл бұрын
I found the non run flats generally softer and more pleasant all round, most surprising was the effect on brake progression and feel, maybe the world of runflats has moved on, I hope so. Not enough brown or unusual interiors, it would be my spec on an m340i I think. Unfortunately adaptive dampers are standard on the 340 so hopefully they’ve improved somewhat, something to be said for the simplicity of a traditional passive damper, when they leak they’re broken and you can swap them, never sure what the electronic bits in an active one are really doing, although you can probably tell when a passive is past it’s best without a leak, plus much cheaper to swap. I’ve thought about a suspension refurb at some point soon, maybe even an upgrade, but the originals are a good compromise. It will be difficult to ditch the diesel grunt for everyday use if I do jump to petrol, just feels like last chance to have one, for old times sake!

That's very interesting about the braking progression as my 220iAT's brakes are dud though I think the energy recovery system on the rears (even though it's not a hybrid...) has an effect too. Coincidentally my current F45 AT had the same tyres fitted OE as the F31 - Bridgestone Potenza S001 RFT - and the size the same as the F31s fronts @ 225/45R18 so a direct comparison and the tyres at the front lasted longer on the F45 at around 23K miles even though it's a FWD. When I replaced the F31 fronts the fitter said the wear-rate was probably down to the heavy weight of the car. On the F45 they fitted Continental runflats (lease company's choice) and they were more comfortable and quieter and less tramliney the the B-stones, I not sure about their performance otherwise as I swapped them to the rear for wear reasons AND coz the one wheel vibrates due to the fitter buckling the wheel a tad struggling to get the Contis on! Also to note that in 2020 [I think] BMW stopped fitting RFT as OE on many models (including the F45) apparently for WLTP reasons. I had a Merc 220CDI estate for while, took it round Ireland, and even though it had less bhp than the F45 it seemed a nicer touring drive that I'm liking down to the greater torque of diesel and longer wheelbase chassis. In a way hybridisation of petrol drivetrains is a good idea to add low-rev torque like a diesel but weight & implementation is a factor and if u have to plug-it-in too that not great.

One interesting thing about going to PS4 non RF was the wear rate front and back reversed. The S001 lasted nearly 40k on the rear, 20k on the front and the PS 4 did 20k rear and would have done closer to 40k front if the outside edge hadn’t worn prematurely which seems to be a feature of BMW and my old C220, despite efforts to keep tracking to factory spec. The change to slight toe out (within spec) seems to have helped but time will tell. I assume the switch in wear rate was down to completely changing the ability and balance of the car with the extra grip, although PS4 overall probably wore slightly quicker as the grip must come from somewhere and it’s probably a softer compound. The original S001 were total garbage IMHO, bordering on a scary lack of front end grip/actually any end grip!

You’re right, someone pointed that out to me, if only I’d done a video 7 years ago when it was new 😂. Anyway to be honest I haven’t used the cruise in ages, I’ve preferred the speed limiter when I’ve been on longer trips. Actually not sure I’d get adaptive again. I’ve used Volvos pilot system in a couple of cars recently and it’s ok but I find myself zoning out, a couple of videos are coming for those cars!

Will the adaptive cruise control bring the car to a complete stop and then go again after 3 seconds if the car in front moves on? (like the VW system).
@thatcarnutsguy
@thatcarnutsguy 2 жыл бұрын
Yes it will. May not be exactly 3 seconds but it’s in that order. After the 3 seconds (ish) you just have to tap the throttle and it’ll set off and continue doing it’s thing. You can also press a button but I forget which one, maybe RES.

@@thatcarnutsguy I have it on a Mk7 Golf GTD and it works really well. Only time its done anything really unnerving was going down the A1, 2 lane section. A car in front was slowing to turn off into a petrol station with a very small slip road and a 90 degree turn in. I knew it woud be gone before there was a problem but the cruise saw a pretty much stationary vehicle infront of me so braked hard. Lesson learned there - just keep your foot on the accelerator if that sort if thing happens and it's all good.

I’ve had a 2015 65 plate LCI 335d touring for the past 5 years in a very similar specification & still adore it! 😘, have absolutely no plans to sell it even after the 5 years & it’s just turned over 50000miles. The one & only issue I’ve had with mine was one of the electric tailgate struts failed which was covered by warranty & repaired quickly. I do agree with you regarding the brakes & the start/stop torque converter jerkiness, although I’ve changed the pads & discs all round recently & they seem a bit better but an expensive job as you say. I’ve opted to stick with runflats as my wife is the primary user & I like the security of knowing she’s not going to get stuck anywhere with the kids, although I’ve not had a single puncture yet🙄🤷‍♂️🤣
@thatcarnutsguy
@thatcarnutsguy 2 жыл бұрын
The gas strut on mine has started to go, obviously not powered but just makes the boot opening a bit slower, apparently it’s common. My reasons for maybe keeping the runflats were the same as yours, but most punctures I’ve had have allowed time to get somewhere before full deflation. I do wonder whether they’ve got better since the tech has improved, and you can get a Michelin PS4 runflat which is probably way better than the original Bridgestones, which were poor. As you I’ve struggled to find a replacement car that will give anything more, so it’ll stick around for a while longer!
