You need to register the battery using ISTA or other Diagnosis system each time the battery is changed irrespective of whether you install a battery with a different specification or not. The BMWs have an Intelligent Battery Sensor that monitors the battery and adjusts the charging circuit as the battery ages. By registering a new battery the IBS is reset starting the cycle again.

In my f10 528i xdrive I had to replace and do registration of new AGM battery in engine controller, because BMW comfort module didn't sleeped other modules after 30s of switch off the engine. That was a reason that new battery was almost fully discharged after a night. I bought on aliexpress cheap chinese BMW OBD2 service interface and registered new battery via OBD2 slot. Comfort module started to sleeped all electronic modules and car systems after 30s from off the engine, as it should usually do before. And everything is fine with a new AGM battery up till now. Remember, You have to register new battery after change! Other vise your electric car systems and electric for instance electric cooling pump will not be sleeped and new battery will die very soon.

So first and foremost...Thanks for the video. It was helpful. I did the swap yesterday and matched up the new battery with the old....original battery. My car is a 535i xdrive from 2011, so my battery was 10-11 years old!!!! I tried to keep power on by using the positive post under the hood and I used a battery tender / charger to keep power to it. I was careful of the terminals on the battery in the trunk while doing this. I believe that I still lost power as I would have to guess that the seconds positive terminal on the battery at a guess must go to power the computer and so i lost power. I know because I had to reset my clock, but all other functions were there. I replaced my battery with the closest Cold Cranking amp etc battery that I could which I got from the local Interstate battery dealer. The dealer knows batterys trust me. He was the owner and knew the exact sizes etc. so it was as close as we could get. Just slightly more CCA.
@napoleonelbert124

Did you register or code the new battery? If not, are you experiencing any issues? I have a 2011 535i xDrive also and I need to replace the battery. Thinking about doing it myself. Mechanic quoted me $500+ for replacement and registering.
@passingasgarage2375
@passingasgarage2375 2 жыл бұрын
@@napoleonelbert124 I did not. I tried to buy the exact battery as far as the cold cranking amps etc. It took me about 1 - 1/2 hours to change it out. I just drove it about 10 miles each way with several stops and did not notice any issues or any dash lights or messages etc. It definitely turns over way faster with less effort and was long over due. I have a dealer that is the local distributor of batteries in my area and they always have batteries that are either out of date or were returned for some reason. They test them all and sell them at giveaway prices. They tested mine before I bought it and it was fully charged and no issues. Lets just say that I paid less than $100 for the battery....so all good. A bit of advice is that the rear plastic cover needs to be removed to get the piece out behind where the battery sits and it is held in by those plastic screws basically and when you pull them out you will break them. You can get new ones at Home Depot for next to nothing. There are 4 of them. Good luck.

Hello. Just a little tip , try the test of current consumption while in Sleep Mode. All the latches of the doors, trunk need to be closed, computers need to go to sleep mode. After that you hook an amp clamp on the power cable, try each of them individually. And then under the glove box pull pull out fuses in order and you will find your parasitic draw when the mAmp will drop close to 0. Good luck

the design and the whole process of so many affixation points and attachments and bolts, i must say . . . it is EXTREMELY and UNNECESSARILY cumbersome when all you are trying to achieve is to remove an old battery and put a new one in !!! they made such a BIG STORY out of a rather trivial job :( :( :( They should have instead created high resistance metal spring plates that simply snap the battery into place to secure it from all sides, WITHOUT so many weird and unwieldy attachments and the use of so many bolts and nuts !!

Good video, but you cut the video where you are actually removing the negatives and positives.

@@mrdustie3997 “Diagnosis” tester usually called a diagnostic code reader (aka scan tool) which can read diagnostic trouble codes. I don’t think a basic model will accomplish registering your new battery. I believe a bi-directional scan tool is needed at the very least. However, don’t take what I type here as gospel as I am currently researching a battery change for my 2011 550 X-drive. It has the original battery and still starts the car in very cold weather on my first attempt. At this point in time the “charge battery” warning is always present. It is my understanding that even though the new battery is an exact replacement it needs to be registered. The computer needs to know the age of the battery and will adjust its charging strategy accordingly. I will take an educated guess that perhaps an unregistered battery will be overcharging without the driver knowing it. In my case the computer would think that the battery is 10 years old instead of new. The parts guy at my local BMW dealership told me I could have one of three different batteries in my car. I had to remove the trunk flooring and take a look myself. I returned to the dealership with a photo of my battery and was told a new battery would cost $298 plus tax. Installation charge would be $198 (hourly rate is $165). Update: I have a friend who works at a dealership (not BMW) and he purchased an exact replacement battery for me for $197 (it was manufactured by Varta with a BMW marking). Next he connected me with the lead mechanic at his shop who did the changeout for $100 at his home. He said it was not absolutely necessary to hook up a memory saver before disconnecting the old battery on my vehicle. However, the 8 emission monitors might become incomplete and I would fail an emissions test if I drove to a nearby testing station immediately after the battery swap. By the time I drove home (17 miles) only 3 monitors were incomplete. After 40 miles all but the fuel system monitor were complete. A few more miles of driving and the fuel system monitor should be ready. The only other issue with not using a memory saver was that the car clock had to be reset. He was able to “register” my new battery with a BMW code reader and this procedure must be done. (He said he thought a warning would appear on my car’s display indicating that it was not registered). Also, the alternator would overcharge the new battery if not registered. This has been quite a learning experience for me and I’m glad I did the research. Due to the connections I have with good friends in the business I was able to save around $200 compared to the price quoted by the BMW dealership. I am left with only one more thought: I could have easily changed the battery myself and I wonder if I could have then driven to the mechanic’s home. His only task would be the registration. It took him less than 15 minutes to change the battery and actually more time to register it.
