A friend got one of these for a weekend from his company, i had the pleasure to ride with him. This car is incredible, perfect mix of luxury and raw power. I would buy one instantly, the „one“ car for all my needs.

LOVE the Miami Vice soundtrack! This is "my" favorite 5 series! I'd be really happy with this even if the new M5 is more powerful!

Great review Thomas! I own a 2014 550i xDrive and love it, although I wish I could drive it properly on the Autobahn, but sadly in the US we are constrained to 65 MPH on crappy, pothole infested roads up here in the northeast. Looks like this is an improvement on an already great car. Cheers.

Well said Thomas, you were right in saying we didn't expect otherwise. That said: the all out performance on the Autobahn in the M550i was pleasing to see nonetheless. I think the next M5 will be next level, it will have to be in order to trump this car. Another top notch video from Thomas and Autogefühl!

The color looks remarkably similar to my gorgeous 2005 330Ci in MysticBlau Metallic. IMHO the best color for these cars!

After 4 months of ownership, I finally reached the end of the 1000 mile break-in period. Now for the fun part. Mild mannered Clark Kent wrapper with Superman potential is how to best describe this M550. Loud when you want; quiet when you need to be a grown up. Added the 20” 5 spoke wheels, a must to give this classically designed sedan some attitude. All black of course. Didn’t know what to expect when I purchased it, but it is truly an enjoyable automobile. Beastly and scary when it throws you back in your seat with a tromp of the right pedal. The old-school V8 rumble feels a bit American vs German. So far, I’m happy with the purchase.

Great review Thomas, as usual:-) This is a beautiful car. I've owned two BMW's, first the E39 540i for 20 years- never got over it. Absolutely gorgeous engine with 4.4L v8. Now the F02 750Li xdrive. Just feel that there are so many technological features in today's cars...it's almost crazy:-)!!! Thanks for the review. Keep it up👍

750Li perhaps not a good choice, 540 is really a good car especially comfortable enough but agile in corners, 750 without L version does still struggles at 200+ in corners, Long wheel base i imagine would be worse although i only drove 750i but you can't go wrong anyway with a BMW

Thomas, your review helped me make the decision to purchase a 2018 Mediterranean Blue on Oyster Nappa leather M550xi. Excellent car with plenty of power and a big 180 degree departure away from my Prius of 11 years. Ambient lighting is kept on “Thomas Blue” of course!

Not a big fan of BMW but I really like how they've done the blank buttons for missing equipment next to the gear lever. On some cars like mercedes you can see that the buttons are missing for some equipmen and in a 100k e class that looks bad

Very elaborated video, I really enjoyed watching! Just love this very BMW M550i, great, elegant colour and fabulously beautiful alloy wheels. And I absolutely second your opinion - I would always go for this one rather than the M5. The latter is just far too aggressive both sound- and stylingwise and lacks every elegance. No matter what size is your bank account - one should always stick to a certain level of understatement.

Absolutely gorgeous, and thanks for the very informative video. I'm going to look for a Mediterranean Blue with Tortufo Merino full leather in about 2-3 years. MSRP is almost $100k USD right now for a loaded version. I feel pretty confident I can find the build I want for no more than $50k. Depreciation can be a wonderful thing when you're not the one taking the hit!

The M5 is generally undrivable in the states. own a 550 ix and before an M5. Got nothing to do with affordability. Just a more comfortable day to day car, unless you just want to be a showoff and the envy of other petrolheads in your neighborhood.

Me too. They're taking the car around on roadshows at the moment. I will be seeing it on the 24th of May in Philly. They are showing it to loyal customers (you are either in an M5 or 550 ix now).

No breaking period, but you are advised to let the warm up process happen each time you start up cold for the first 2000 miles. Yes, got the whole works on the car. Almost 90k, but has all the conceivable extras offered on it.

It ran over the bag because it's not just the ultrasonic PDC sensors that it relies on but also the Connected Drive Camera that's mounted in front of the rear view mirror in combination of the radar settings, that didn't detect that bag. I think it's also the software that didn't detect that it was a human being or another car to solidify the remote control parking feature.

Thomas, great review, as usual, but rear steering is actually available as an option for M550i (I have ordered it). In Germany I think it is called "Adaptives M Fahrwerk Professional".

My 2019 M550i xDrive is my 6th BMW, and is BY FAR the best car I've ever owned. A perfect blend of luxury, elegance, agility and tremendous power. I tested the M5 Competition and rejected it because it was too noisy and stiff. I tested the 540i and it was underpowered. The M550i is perfection. It is not a car, but a precision instrument.

Tnx Tomas One more you did a good job and a good review of BMW May I give some suggestion about bootlid closing force: If you use a torque/force instrument and put in on the striker, then press automatic closing button on the bootlid and wait until bootlid hit the instrument you will get approx force for the bootlid. I think the force will be 70-90 Nm which is ok. Greetings from Sweden!

Great review as always. BMW had better do something about the remote parking feature as you showed it is not 100% working as it should when it ran over that bag the first time round. They should do a firmware or software update for all cars that have this feature as soon as possible.

With the key fob Auto-park, if you try to drive it with the steering wheel turned, does the steering auto-straighten first or does it just move according to whatever steering angle it was left at?

Great review Thomas! What's your opinion on the ride quality on standard M550i M active suspension and 540i with dynamic damper control? As you mentioned the M550i ride is more on the stiff side.

Thanks for the review Thomas! As you are an experienced driver in many countries, what's your opinion on the usefulness of these powerful cars in general these days? Especially when there is no autobahn around as in most countries. In my home country (the Netherlands) we barely see cars with such strong engines anymore as it's mostly viewed as an unnecessary and perhaps outdated concept.

Is the touch climate control (shown at 15:54) an upgrade in the 2018 M550i? I've seen a few cars that did not have this feature. They had the standard fan control buttons and the numbers that were displayed were much like the classic BMW numbering style (dashed).

Great review! In my opinion, the best incarnation of the 5-series is the Alpina B5 Biturbo, would be very nice with a Thomas-style review of it! :)

I must confess! If "I" wanted to buy a sporty car here in America, it's either a Caddy or a German brand since as of this model year, The U.S. does not make a interior large enough for my height! I'm 6'4" tall and am disappointed with all U.S. makers of cars since nobody makes a decent car for taller folks anymore! I do however LOVE this 550 BMW!

He mentions the M550i does NOT have the ability to have rear wheel steering. At least in the US we do have this avaliable in the M550i luckily. Makes a huge difference

The car looks great and sounds great from the outside but, based on the video, I am unsure about the engine sound from inside. But I know that we cannot fully judge the sound from a recorded video. Still, my current favourite BMW for both interior and exterior sound is the BMW M2.

Hi Thomas! Good review, as always :) BTW is there any chance for some BMW Alpina reviews? I know they are rather small exclusive brand, but it might be interesting as alternative for high end BMW M cars.
