In todays video we will continue rebuilding the salvaged 2004 BMW 545i E60 by replacing the broken I Drive controller, installing the rest of the missing interior components, installing an aftermarket Apple CarPlay system and preforming a transmission service and oil change. Two refills would be done on this trans, first is the cold one which is about 3.5 to 4 qts then the hot refill, which comes after starting the car and maintaining a proper operating temperature of the transmission which will allow to go through all the gears and having a 5 seconds in between each gear level, then do the hot refill which takes around 1.5 to 2 qts.

Thanks! I noticed the major fluid leaks after this service so I did wonder if the fluid had something to do with it.

Hey! Yes it was a pain especially doing it from under the car on jackstands! I’ll add the functionality of them in another video, I did have a little footage of it but it didn’t come out that well.

The hard downshift is a coding issue with the Egs. The 2-1 tip in needs to be coded in along with an update. I promise you it hasn’t been updated since factory. BMW puts out SPdaten files every 3 years or so with updates across the board. DME, Egs. CAS, FRM… and so on.

In my transmission, four cylindrical sleeves need to be replaced along with the rectangular bridge seal.

Yes I ended up replacing those as well as all of the solenoids. Check out next weeks video for that!!

Playing a dangerous game with that mechatronic unit. After proper fill you’ll need the 100 mile learn period and check your fill again. The z transmission is touchy and needs to be precise with proper temperature being monitored otherwise no bueno.

Hey, thanks for the info. I just redid the transmission service including solenoids etc. I’ll definitely look into the drive cycles! Check out next week’s video when I run through it all and let me know what you think. I am loving these ZF’s more and more though
