Absolutely invaluable demonstration for deciding whether or not to go with this feature. One can read a lot of reports form anxiety ridden experimentation with this feature but seeing it makes all of the difference. Had I seen this, I would have added to my 2016 640i order. All of Mico's videos far exceed the information and quality from other sources. Well done!

The ACC is great. I use it everyday. Snowlover, to answer your question. No and yes. Yes it will but not till it detects an imminent collision. At that point you can be cm's from the car in front depending on speed and the car should stop in time to prevent an accident or prevent a major accident and reduce to a minor. At 7.52 the beep is the car sensing it was too close to the car in front and it is in danger of a collision. I would suggest that the dips prevented the ACC from detecting the car in front. There are 3 stages to collision prevention. 1. Warning 2. Brake readiness (loading) 3. Active stopping where the car takes over breaking. I will add if you are game, allow your car to get to the beeping point (brake loading) and then touch the brakes, dam you get the full braking power of that car. it is truly amazing how fast it can stop. Mico great review. I would also add that it does struggle with the situation where you are coming up on a car stopped at a set of lights that it has not detected slowing down.(10.41 on video) I have had the car attempt to keep going as it did not detect a stopped car. It may have stopped if I left it but was not going to take the chance. Now that I have had it, it would be a must have for any new car I get.

Mico, your review and especially your demonstration of the ACC is spot on. If you want more than 3sec of Resume memory in traffic (on the highway) you can add the Traffic Queuing feature: then the Resume delay extends to 30sec and the car will steer in traffic up to 60 kph. I have both on my new gen X1 and truth be told: I like to use ACC as much as possible. Your comments are really to the point: I learned all of that from experience myself. Could not have presented it better. Keep up the good work. Much appreciated.

Great demonstration. Real life honesty and helpful hints. No sugarcoating at all. This is the kind of info people need to really make an informed decision whether or not they should get it. I‘m impressed.

Really appreciate you making this honest video. I live in the UK, my 5 series (g30) has ACC, but no 'stop & go' feature. I was planning to have someone code it in, as it doesn't require any addition hardware. It's not an available option when buying the car in Europe... and now I see why. Stop & go feature is not reliable enough. We have a lot of bendy roads and most European cities & towns (even small ones) have a decent number of cyclists. Our lanes are narrower, plus a lot of people weaving through. I can see it being handy when crawling in traffic, but there's no way I'd use it as part of general town driving. LOL. Might still get it coded in just to impress passengers.

The series of events that happen at 10:45 are typical of most ACC systems. The car Mico was following changed lanes and the next vehicle in front is not moving. The ACC system will not lock onto a vehicle that is not moving and stop the vehicle. In these instances the driver has to stop the vehicle with the brakes via the brake pedal. Basically the current ACC systems keep flow up/down/stop but do not adapt to something not flowing.

Michael Berwick thank you for the explanation . This makes sense and definitely gives us all something to be aware of.

I disagree with this explanation: the car *does* “lock on” to the stationary car (the indicators in the dash proof that) - the only thing is that the ACC will not break the car as hard as you need it to in that situation, and therefore the driver needs to intervene. The frontal collision warning is very clear on the need for intervention: if it beeps in fast repetition, your foot goes to the brakes and pushes it hard (the brakes get preconditioned as well): no need (and no time) to think: brake first, think later.

Love the demo! I don't have it in my 2 series. And I thought it would be nice. But now that I see it .. I don't think I would rely on it. But always good to have. But I don't think I would have used it alot if it's not really that reliable on itself. Just safer to drive it yourself ..

You're safer than a safety system? What if you're tired or get distracted? The system never does.

In general, very similar to the distronic plus I have in my E-class. One thing I like in Mercedes system is that I can resume without pressing the gas pedal. Also, mine may track slightly better in tight turns. I have some of the same issues, such as my system also has difficulty dealing with cars merging closely into my lane. Also, has difficulty recognizing cars that are completely stopped. Does a much better job if the car ahead is even moving slightly. Otherwise I run up on them much as you did. Also, I find the closest distance on my car to be a bit too far back, enough to encourage cars to move around me. The BMW system also seems to maintain quite a distance even when on its closest setting.

so the adaptive cruise control may not stop you at 10.41, but shouldn't collision avoidance feature stop you? it knows there is a solid object in front of you and you are still moving, it should brake.

I have one question concerning the ACC Stop & GO function on the BMW F10 series. When using the ACC in traffic and the car comes to a total stand still for longer then 3 / 4 seconds, because of a stopped car in front of you, does the car start to drive automatically when the car in front of you starts to drive? or do you have to either press on the gas or push the cruise control button for the car to start to drive?? I have tried the ACC with Stop & GO on a BMW 5 G10 series and that car can completely stop for more then 4 seconds, even longer then a minute and then start to drive automatically (without touching the gas or cruise control button) when the car in front of it starts to drive. So I want to know if this happens with the F10 series because design wise I do love the F10 series and I really do want to get an F10 series like a 535D with low millage on it but I drive a lot and stand in traffic jams a lot so I find the automatic stop start function of a G10 series AWESOME for that situation so if the F10 series does not start to drive automatically after 4 seconds then its not the car for me...

How helpful is the stop and go if another driver runs through a red light at an intersection, and is coming at you at a perpendicular angle? Also, I appreciate the great demo.

This is a great video, thank you very much. Just one comment: ACC cannot be ordered when one is getting the M-Sport package. It is either ACC or M-Sport, but not both.

Car won't stop in time if there is a stopped car at a light because radar only sees moving cars. If the car isn't moving then it will will prep for emergency stopping .

Hi Mico, I was not able to build a BMW with this feature on the BMW USA site, is this something that isn't promoted much by BMW and offered only on request at the dealer? Also, do you know if BMW service and retrofit this to existing BMWs?
@micosilver
