Hey everybody! Today we will be looking at the notorious BMW coolant outlet flange failure (mickey mouse connector), this is very common as these cars start to age and is an issue among many BMW N5x N2x motors. In this video I replace mine in my N54 335i E90 with an aluminum replacement as part of preventative maintenance, and not a minute too soon! Check out the video to see just how bad yours can look and I urge everyone with the original plastic piece to please swap it out to an aluminum replacement ASAP!

I'll be doing this job in a couple weeks. It's worth noting that if you buy a new hose assembly, it comes with the new plastic fitting installed, so you will have to remove the fitting either way. Thank goodness someone had the sense to make replacement aluminum fittings. BTW- I would have clocked that clamp differently so I could easily loosen it if needed in the future. Thanks for making this video. It is very comprehensive and clearly shot!

Great video and more detailed than most. It was quite hard to remove the metal clip on the coolant hose and crushing it with the Chanel Locks probably saved me a half hour in trying to cut it off. The O ring on the new device is not really compressible by hand and you have to thread the bolt to squeeze it in. My car was at 100k and it looked ok but it broke off pieces inside the hose that I had suck out with a wet dry vacuum. I needed about 1 litre to top it off after the bleed process. You can do a partial flush which is nice. Took me about 2 hours total but worth it.

Thank Goodness my coolant light went off and warned me that my coolant was low which inturn lead me to inspect my 2010 328i. My thermostat had cracked and it was leaking, as a result i changed water pump. Further inspection revealed 2 other hoses had to be replaced and of them was this crazy flange hose. Didn't even know this thing existed good thing i wasn't stranded. Good video.

I siphoned all the coolant out of the expansion tank before starting (into empty 1 gallon coolant container, filled up about 80%) = zero leakage when I removed the plastic flange. I have a 2010 e91 with 47K miles and plastic fitting was still in perfect condition FWIW.

My 2006 e92 330i 120k had an oil cooler gasket leak (in front of the filter housing). I now have a coolant leak from this Mickey Mouse flange caused by the oil leak speeding up deterioration of the plastic. Was not looking forward to changing the whole hose as the bottom end is way down on the thermostat so difficult to get to. Hopefully this video has given me an easier fix although may have to remove the fan to get enough room to work. Many thanks for the video really clear !

Hello Petrol Fed! Your videos are very good and of great help to those who are professional or not. I want to record my thanks to your noble person. Now let's get to the topic of your video. On my BMW M5 E60 LCI 530i - (N52B30A) 2008/9 I had to change it due to the time of use. It was still the original. At the moment there was no substitute and import would take time. What did I do? I took a connection and blue PPR tube (Random Polypropylene Copolymer), which is used in compressed air systems and made it similar to the original. I'm using it even today, and the original that arrived I left it as a reserve. It was very good and met the characteristics of use. It's been in use for over 6 months now. Big hug from Brazil.

I followed the steps to bleed the system on a 2006 N52 and the heater didn't come on, and the water pump didn't come on either. So I manually play with the bleeder with the cap off, car running, and warming up. And I'll bleed it some more with the cap on. I've bled it this way before. It seemed fine. What's the issue if all the air doesn't come out, etc. ? Thanks, the connector was toast.

I think BMW recommends tightening the cap and screw while bleeding the system. Then eventually, air will come on top and coolant level go down . Then after bleeding you add more coolant to the required level

I have 2011 535i, drove 9 miles back home in the middle of this trip, temperate went up to 260F, wanted to come back home asap. 30 fit to my driveway car did not accelerate. Opened a hood and realized the coolant hose flange broke off and all my coolant was gone. Do you think the engine is dead?
@SpeedCave
@SpeedCave Жыл бұрын
I don’t believe the motor is damaged in your case, but yes it is a slight possibility. Considering it was not that many miles the car probably went into Limp mode when it got too hot and cut power/acceleration on purpose to prevent further damage to the motor. Try changing out the flange and refilling with coolant, and try driving it again. Don’t forget to bleed it too as lot’s of air probably got into your cooling system.

Mom just got a used 2009 528 and that flange sprung a leak, but I caught the evidence in the morning puddle underneath. But in taking it apart did not expect a 1/8 inch sliver piece to go down the tube toward the pump. My reaction was to plunge the tube downward and fluid gushed out but later when we kept back together there was the clicking sound which tells me evidently the plastic went into the pump fan. So now I would assume to change the pump or rebuild the pump?
@SpeedCave

Now once your done with this repair, don't forget to top the coolant off, then turn on the car. Have the heater on blast, heat all the way up. Take the coolant cap off, and wait until your radiator fan turns on. The coolant will burp air out...(Watch your eyes)... then top off your coolant again... and keep the car running still.

Before filling the reservoir with coolant I undo the bleeder screw to let air from the system escape as I fill it with coolant, then once the reservoir is full I close the bleeder screw and I leave the cap off and begin the electronic water pump bleeding process and watch for air pockets from the stream shown in the video. Alternatively you can rest the cap on top without screwing it on to prevent splatter. Either way once there are no more air pockets (usually 10min) you can run the car, just make sure to fully thread the cap back on. Thanks for watching!

Another great bit of German engineering not, lets use a plastic fitting bolted to the front of the engine and them constantly flow boiling water through it, I had mine go (on a 523i M sport touring) in the middle of the night on a motorway, at first when I spoke to a UK dealer they said the part didn't exist, then they said they could get it but only complete with the hose for just under 100 pounds but it would take 2-3 weeks, I found one made out of billet aluminium (not unlike the one in the video) on ebay for less than ten pounds and had it within 3 days. these videos are great but they do show how bad and how much of a rip off the dealers are.

You will most likely need an extractor set, where you drill into the broken bolt and use a reverse drillbit to grab it and spin it out. Worst case have it towed to a local shop that can extract it

Is there a risk of problems to the serpentine belt from the coolant that leaks out during this process?
@SpeedCave
@SpeedCave Жыл бұрын
You can definitely go the extra step and clean the belt off with Simple Green or some kind of cleaning spray, even finish it off with belt conditioner if you wish, but from my experience it doesn’t negatively affect the belt if you don’t clean it.

@@SpeedCave Thank you for the feedback. Do you know whats the coolant hoses called that connects to plastic flange on N46 E90 as there's 2 pipes and mine seems to have some corrosion on the slimmer pipe since that flange connector has 2 outlets.

@@AvenNaidoo-qj4oh Yes that plastic flange should be BMW Part # 11 53 7 560 130 however please double check fitment to your exact vehicle as there may be different variants. This motor is not in the US so my familiarity with them is very limited.

why on earth would you not invert the hose when removing the old flange and risk the chance of falling back down the hose??
@SpeedCave
@SpeedCave 3 жыл бұрын
The hose still has coolant in it and flushes anything you might miss right out when pointed down after flange removal, as we did right after.

Probably should have mounted the flange first, then put on the hose.
@SpeedCave
@SpeedCave 3 жыл бұрын
Factory flange comes pre-attached so it is normal to install the flange with the hose already on it. As well as when you use this style clamp the two 10mm bolts will interfere or get in the way as it’s a very tight spot to fit pliers!
@speedster0009
@speedster0009 3 жыл бұрын
@@SpeedCave yeah, no. I’ve done this repair on an x5. Mount the flange and slide up the hose clamp with channel locks. Also, easier access to the bolts without a hose in the way.

@SpeedCave
@SpeedCave 3 жыл бұрын
@@raybutts9133 hard to say since every car goes through different heat cycles, not to mention it may have been replaced at some point during the cars life without the owner even knowing. For example if a shop does your Oil Filter Housing Gasket and they break this flange in the process (which is very common in less experienced shops), they will have to replace the flange/hose. But regardless it’s a safe bet to just change it since plastic will inevitably fail, aluminum will not. Can’t even count how many cars have been towed to our shop because of this plastic part’s failure!

@@raybutts9133 wow that is extremely low mileage! Congrats on maintaining such a gem, that is very uncommon. As for the age of the plastic, while it definitely has not gone through as much wear and tear as a higher mileage vehicle, it might still be a good idea to do this upgrade preventatively!
