BMW e32/e34 dead battery locked out trick

A great thing with the Bmw E34/E32 is that it is almost impossible to open the doors without the key... But when your battery dies this feature might get you stuck outside of your car.

I was in hospital for 9 weeks and had a dead battery from sitting so long. Thank you for your solution!

For the LH drive build of these cars, go to the passenger side, lift the handle half way and turn the key. This is a mechanical bypass. It is on this side because the right side is the driver door in the EU. The engineers did not relocate this feature to the other side when building LH drive cars. Source: I had and E34 with door lock and battery problems and former BMW tech.

We just had to sort this out on my buddy’s car. It ended up unlocking on both sides individually as he tried the trick. I figured it wouldn’t work because of the euro rhd idea. I was a little thrown back. Surprised it worked on the lhd driver door.

That's not how it works, the only european country that has rhd cars is the Uk, and it's not even in Europe anymore. All the other EU countries are lhd, so you're mistaken about that.

If you car is equipt with a towbar You can open your car with a car battery and speakercable and a meassure instrument to look what is your - and + . Take towbar for connect - and other + in 1 one of the holes except the - connection from the plug box of towbar. Make connections correct and wait 5 minutes and you can open your car with your key like normal!

Works also on E36 Touring with dead battery and locked trunk. What I did was disconnect the rear number plate light, remove the bulb. Connect the red clamp from spare battery to positive end of the bulb contact and black to exhaust pipe. Gave it enough juice to open the doors.

On some you just need to hold the door handle up, THEN turn the key in the lock barrel until it mechanically unlocks just that door (always worked on my older series 5)

Only works on the passenger door for an E32, and sometimes not at all, so this is a good backup :-)

a safer way is to take the power cable from the amp that goes directly to the battery and jump from there..at least thats what i did

Can someone explain why it's a pain on e34's to open a door when you have a dead battery ? Every other car including my e36, you can unlock it even if the battery is fully disconnected. You know, because the lock is mechanical, don't see how it would need electricity... Why is it different on e34?

The key of My e32 750iL (dead for years) does not rotate when I try to unblock the steering, give electrical contact and start up the engine. Does anybody know if there is any electrical block?
