Excellent camera work, and obviously shot on a right hand drive car. Your removal of the trim was obviously a LOT easier than on a left hand drive US specification 1994 E36 325is. Still, this is the BEST explanation of releasing the switch and how to finesse the red/orange collar out of position. I assure you, I wish I had seen this video before changing the switch on a 1991 525i. No amount of words could substitute for the simplicity of your video. THANKS!!!

My advice is to keep a spare switch in the glovebox and study this video to heart. German cars are unlike Japanese cars, in which there is a shift-lock just in case the brake interlock switch gets damaged with prolonged use.

Awesome. I've done this repair a few times before over the years I've had my E36, but never remember how I did it. Will get this project done tomorrow.

It stops when the brake pedal is tapped lightly. Buzzing starts again after 2 or 3 seconds when the pedal is released. No solution yet! Thanks.

Thank you ! Excellent video !!!! Must be an early model with no traction control. Later cars 96+ had a 4 pin connector and the kick panel removal is much harder due to the massive obdii connector and its two wiring being stubbornly on. The issue is I can't get under the dash. I might remove the seat to gain access. I'm just again saying BMW engineers are dumb idiots. Cabin filter replacement is a nightmare. Brake light switch replacement nightmare. On most cars the brake light switch screws onto the master cyl so replacement is super easy and no bent back , upside down under the dash. Same with cabin filters - most cars you open the glove box, open filter housing, filter slides out. On EVERY BMW, its a nightmare under the dash, removing parts of the dash, carpet, etc. Why won't they learn from their mistakes in 30 years ? 92 E36 cabin filter and 2019 i3 replacement was equally painful. At the same time Honda, Kia, Mazda is a breeze. Personal experience, it may vary but in my household this is the case.

I am unable at the moment to press the new switch into the opening in the metal plate. It appears in the video that the red collar moves out and beyond the tabs, allowing it to clip into the plate easily. The supposed BMW original part I bought does not allow the red collar to extend beyond the point where the tabs move in easily. They are hard up against the red collar. I do have the guide tab aligned with the opening in the corner. I've put a lot of pressure on it and I'm afraid I'll break it. Any suggestions appreciated!

Just changed mine. Only an elf could fit under this dashboard. Very cheap plastic micro switch. Typical junk electronics from BMW. Don’t get me started on BMW electronics.
