The ONE TIME USE clips that secure the fender liner to the fender and rocker panel are BMW part number: 51478166992

I did a mistake while jacking up my e39 , I missed the jack stand and almost damaged windshield reservoir .....with this procedure I can see how much I damaged the floor ... by the way I love your channel :) keep the good work guys

You said it yourself. I just purchased all new lines including the intesive lines which lead up to the two jet units on the bonnet. I also ordered all new hoses, connectors and all other parts between the reservoir and the two headlight jet units, one unit being on the driver's side and the second one on passenger's side. I replaced both headlight jet units the other day. Somehow the rigth jet of the driver's side headlight jet unit had broken off. So, becasue I am me and I am over the top picky when it comes to repairing, cleaning, I ordered jet units for both sides. I could have gotten away with just replacing the driver's side unit, but then the driver's side is nice and new from BMW while the other side was dull and dated. It wasn't until I replaced the driver's side jet unit that the line was brittle. I don't even know what kind of shap all of the other parts, connectors and hoses are for the headlight wash system, so I just ordered all new parts for the headlight wash system and windscreen intensive clean system from BMW.

Beautiful car Ryan! Glad to see it out of the shop after so long. Also thanks for the washer fluid diagnosis. Quick comment: have you thought about painting or powder coating your calipers a neutral color like black or silver? I think it'd look great.

Probably a dumb question - but if both the windshield and headlight washers are tied to that one container in the wheel well - what is the 2nd container & pump under the hood for?

That's the intensive washer reservoir. There is a button on the end of one of the stocks that, when pressed, uses that fluid instead for a longer period of time (and with a more powerful pump) to wash away bugs or more debris than the usual fluid.

Hey Ryan Completely off-topic! I've been looking to install a 2x12 GAS subwoofer into my E39 530i that came with DSP.. I have never installed a subwoofer of any kind before but it doesn't look way too tricky. However I can't for the life of me find a good guide or video on how I would start.. Any tips?

I don't know about installing aftermarket subs with the stock DSP amp. I have the M-audio subs. Easy installation and nice results, there is a video here on E39Source.

Ryan I’ve accessed my reservoir but how did you get the refill hose off? That white one that feeds water to the tank? I can’t get mine off to remove my reservoir and I don’t want to pinch too hard otherwise it might break or rip.

The fill hose should simply pull off, though I do recall it requiring a lot of force. Maybe a bit of twist too?

@e39Source can you explain the top reservoir and pump. i cant find reliable information on the internet. I was told by a specialty shop that the engine bay pump was the main washer pump. and that if i needed windshield fluid i should push in the SC button on the Wiper stick in the car. But i dont believe that is true. I should be able to pull in the stick and get regular washer action from the pump you showed how to replace in this video. they also explained that the fluid reservoir was only for the headlight washers. Which i also find to be inaccurate.

This is indeed incorrect. The primary fluid reservoir is behind the front right fender liner/fender, and there are two pumps here. The larger pump is for the headlight washers, which run every ~3rd or 5th pull of the windshield washers. The smaller pump here is for the primary windshield washers. The smaller reservoir under the hood is only for the windshield, and this is triggered by pressing the button at the end of the wiper stalk. The idea is that you could put intensive washing fluid here to be used on a very dirty windshield (bugs, ice, etc). The rest of the time, for normal cleaning, you have the primary reservoir behind the fender liner that is triggered by pulling the wiper stalk forwards.

@@E39Source thank you for confirming that. that is exactly what i thought too. The shop i went to are BMW specialists. i would have expected them to know this. When i pull the stalk in nothing comes out. so i suspected that the washer pump below by the wheel well is the culprit. being that it was harder to get to i opted to go to this shop. they simply replaced the pump for the intensive cleaning reservoir for $173 ($86 for parts and rest for labor). when i pulled in the stalk the next day after i picked up the car i still got nothing. i brought it back and the managing technician said that on my car since it was a change over year they were prepping the engine to go to the new chassis. so pressing in the SC button is the only way to get washer fluid. when i pointed to the main reservoir he said that was for the head light washers. i dont know why im saying all this. im just annoyed at this shop who are supposed to be experts and so far you are the only person who confirms my thoughts and also lines up with the car manual.

@@davepearlman5491 I would start with checking the fuses in the glovebox ceiling for the washer system. From there, check the plastic hoses under the hood. It is common for them to get very brittle and break or crack. Then at the main reservoir, check and clean out the talk and inspect the pump and pump filter/screen, these can easily get clogged with debris. You can also check the pump motor by applying 12v. Lastly, your actual washer nozzles can get clogged up. They can be cleaned out with a thin metal wire, such as tag wire. The washer function on the E39 is the same for all model years, so don't listen to that BS they're feeding you.

so i assume the headlight washers and windshield washers use the same reservoir and fluid? and i heard that there was an intensive washing system on the m5, where would that reservoir and pump be, or is that also shared?

also, not related to this video. actually more about the car itself. i felt like you said something about it but i missed it, but what's the exhaust system on this car? any muffler deletes or anything or aftermarket parts?

Yes, same reservoir and fluid, just different pipes. The intensive fluid is the small one under the hood infront of the fill port for the main tank. My car has a fully stock exhaust system until the cat-back Eisenmann Race mufflers. It has an E60 545i short shift kit, Eibach rear sway bar, ECS stainless braided brake lines, and Hawk HPS pads.

The small tank under the hood is the intensive tank. When you press the button on the end of the stock (not pulling the whole stock like usual) it uses the other fluid which is just supposed to be a more intensive fluid. Dumb feature in my opinion.

Ryan is it normal for the used windshield washer water to drain from the wheel liner area on top by the fender area? I clearly see the drainage vents on each front wheel area. I originally thought i had a leak issue but after full servicing of the reservoir, new grommets and testing, I see that the water leaking is actually from the drain. Any ideas?

There are drains on the back sides of the front fender liners, yes.

@@E39Source Thanks a lot. It appeared to look like reservoir issues at first before attempting to inspect it but it turns out, it’s supposed to leak like that but what a weird design.

There are three pumps on North American-spec E39 M5s (which have the cold weather package). 1 under the hood in the small reservoir for intensive washing. This is the button at the end of the wiper stalk, you could put a more aggressive cleaning agent in there to really cut through bugs/grime. Then one in the primary reservoir for normal windshield washing. The last one is the largest one for the headlight washers.

What's the correct way to remove the filler hose? I yanked on mine and I don't feel good about it, has to be a better way.

It does indeed pull off of the reservoir, and if its original, you may need to get aggressive with it.

@@E39Source I did end up yanking it off, but not before I tried to pry it with a screwdriver. Bad move, might have a hole in it now and I'm sure it's an 1100 dollar hose with a 3 month lead time. Thanks for getting back to me, your videos have been a big help with my 540

Or what can happen is you leave summer fuild in during the winter and it freezes. That happened to my sister her pump and or seal is done.

I believe the total capacity for E39s with headlight washers is around 5 liters.

The seat belt retraction? Mine is slow too. I haven't bothered trouble shooting. Probably a new tensioner would solve that though.

Clean them.... Pull them all the way out. Clip a peg on the top to stop them retracting. With warm soapy water, give them a good scrub and dry with a towel. Make sure to do it on a warm day when you don't need the car and let them dry preferably over night. Don't take the peg off till they are 100% dry. They'll be good as new ;) Hope it made sense ....

It's where the filler pipe connects to the bottle. They just push on but need to use a jubilee clamp

+E39Source everything on your car is tight. Been watching all your vids on this beauty for years. Think your nuts though but omg that car is awesome and long may she be. I've had 2 M5s and a 530d. All have had the leak from the filler pipe. pita. Love them tho. Where is the last video on the rebuild? hurry up with it;-)

I do not recoment remove the headlight washer when you have xenon headlights. the xenon headlights are more sensitive for reflection by dirt on the headlights. you can blind people through your dirty xenon headlights. In the EU you have to have headlight washers for cars xenon headlights.
