I'm doing the same job on a Touring here in South Australia. I pulled the car apart years ago. This video is a great reference to the reassembly. I have to say I'm so glad my car is 100% corrosion free. Living in the driest state in the driest country in the world. I just can't fathom the rust you guys have to endure.

My guess is probably north of £4k inc all those new parts and wotnot, they stopped doing the reinforcements for a while as it's so involved and they were only charging for about half the hours, it's all on their site; I believe they were charging £2.5k for them but might be wrong. I guess it's difficult for them, this is what they're known for, they could charge £70 or £80 an hour for dropping oil and doing routine stuff but choose to do hard involved jobs for a lot less. You can feel the passion in his narration, a real sense of pride in his work! Incredible workmanship and as soon as you see the vids you can see why their reinforcements cost so much more than some other providers.

I just completed a rolling restoration of my 98 E36. Last phase was a drivetrain rebuild. That alone was over $15K. Add to that all new paint, interior including full leather, etc. etc. I basically bought the car twice. But it was still worth it. BMW doesn't make true driver's cars like the E36 and E46 anymore.

Wow... beautiful work... and one lot of it. I have been working on exactly this on a P38 Range Rover 2001 Holland & Holland. Not complete yet. So far without exhaust system, new wheel bearings, new brake speed sensors, and new ride hight sensors, it has been $7,000.00 in parts, and a lot of work. Replacing all brakes, joints, bushings, bolts, and some heat shields need to be remade in stainless for durability. Will make new stainless exhaust, and weld the new fabricated stainless heat shields to the exhaust! Disassembly to this stage... was a really the hardest part due to various frozen fasteners and parts. Be ready to use lots of penetrating oil, heat from propane or MAP gas torch, and a bottle of CO2. You might also damage some wire connectors that have become brittle, which will then need to be replaced and installed into the wiring. You will likely replace all the plastic mounts for the various lines and wires... for the same reason. The Heat and CO2 freezing are the only way to unstick some metal parts... this cracks the corrosion or the thread sealants used. We opted to remove all the undercoating, paint and primer from the entire underside, a brutal job with wire brushes to bright clean, so to get into all the nocks and crannies. Ladder frame we use the 3M Strip and Disks, as well as for heavier parts but sheet metal you have to wire brush and or use finer #M cleaning disks. This involved raising the body 4" to 6" with it higher at the back. The cost for wire brushes and the disks has exceed $400.00. We found using a heavy duty low speed straight grinder like the Makita at 5600 rpm works better than like a Fein at 10,000 rpm... burned up a Fein. Doing it outside below 30 degrees F works best do to the undercoat being brittle, and melting less. But this rules out the use of pneumatic tools due to freezing after 3-5 minutes of use, and we have refrigerated moisture removal air supply, work well in shop. Also, note below freezing you don't have to worry about surface rust reforming, even with lots of cold rainy days. Cleaning differentials is basically about 6-8 hr. job each. The suspension parts etc add up time in a hurry. Painting takes more time as etching, phosphate pre-coating, drying, painting with three coats of KBS coatings Rust Seal followed by one or two of KBS Top Coat is time consuming... worse that must be done without exceeding time between coats, to prevent scuff sanding too. Use the KBS Crystal Clear coat on the aluminum parts after wire brushing, etch and phosphate treatment. It is really true the plastic shield help, behind them little if any other than cleaning dirt. However, the front tires kick up a lot of rain, snow and de-icer so anything that touches gets sand blasted and rusty. We found the rubber over-molds with steel inserts to be junk, things like mud flaps... steel roots out... don't use... opt for even the Chinese plastic substitutes hold up better. Biggest surprise has been the fuel tank opening cover the sheet metal retainer was almost totally eaten away with rust despite protected position. Getting rid of the aluminum over hardboard heat shields is important, and it's better to fabricate stainless steel ones that weld onto the exhaust pipes (if Stainless Steel) than attach to body. Biggest surprise, well four besides the fuel tank opening closure, and anything steel overloaded in rubber junk: a) bumpers held on with very weak and corrosion prone attachments, b) finding the speed sensors for the brakes absolutely frozen in bronze bushed mounts to the axle housings, c) the absolute junk fragile heat shields made of fiberboard covered with basically dimpled aluminum foil... falling apart, and d) plastic fuel and air suspension lines... can live with plastic air suspension lines but the fuel lines must be metal preferably stainless steel or Aeroquip 601 aircraft crashworthy spec hoses.

@Zombie Head right, I mean you can do nothing and pile up cash and wait for retirement or something but isn't that boring AF? I also enjoy working on cars and keeping my E46 M3 perfect. It's a hobby, something I can afford and am willing to pay for to enjoy... some people like playing golf, I like getting my hands dirty working on cars. When I get retired I might no longer be able to crawl underneath my car. My friend thinks it's absurd that I own a car and it's sitting in my garage as I drive my DD to work but then I ask him : where are your golf clubs? It's just a matter of perspective :)

What I don't understand is with going through all fo this why not address the know rear subframe weakness by adding one of the available weld in bracing kits. I also would have definitely done braided brake lines and an limited slip rear dif.

Hi Jeff, many thanks for your comment and kind words! Well, this E46 was to be an original-as-possible Restoration (at the start) before the brighter colours got introduced! So this owner actually didn't want RACP plates. Did you know that we (Redish Motorsport) were the pioneer for the new-class larger-style RACP Plates back in 2011. You can read about the development here: www.redish-motorsport.com/RedishMotorsportE46RearSubframeReinforcementPlateKit.html Yeah I agree a set of Braided Brake Lines, and an LSD would've been an excellent finishing touch. Thanks again for taking the time to comment.

An amazing restoration and very detailed commentary. I wonder what this cost, I would assume £6k. Considering this is only a 330Ci, I hope the exterior of the car matches the condition of the underside. The MOT man will have a heart attack... I get the whole sentiment thing as I’m just as fastidious with my cars regardless of money spent, so good on you for doing this on your prized possession! As owner of a 160k 1999 328i in Pennsylvania they are pretty rust resistant apart from the side jacking points. Those are a mess. They get strained and break or water and grit gets under the rubber jack point boots and rusts away the body. After patching up the rocker panel outer skin and fixing the jack point point sheet metal, I filled in the hole for the rubber jack point, leave them off and attach them with industrial velcro when needed. Seems to work well so far.

Interesting. I did almost the same thing on my 2002 325xi. Didn't have time to manage the heat shield or the exhaust, which was still in very good condition but I did pull the subframe and brackets and powder coated them while changing all the bushings, bearings and seals. Chose the nearly the same colors as you. Except the subframe...which was a metallic blue.

Simple, the e46 chassis in stock 330 guise doesn't need any. BMW should be ashamed of themselves for building a chassis that's drastically slower than what they knew way ahead of time was going to get installed, the s54. They know the rules but obviously due to cost cutting measures ignored them. Always, always and always design an appropriate chassis that's faster/stonger than the engine, period.
