Here's a detailed comprehensive video showing how to reassemble the differential an BMW E46 non M. In my case i reassembled with an LSD but the process is the same for the factory open differential.

That first lock ring launching across the room was a act of god making sure you put the right side in
@Steve-Dallas Жыл бұрын
The lock rings are different thickness and have left / right orientation to set the carrier position. They should be installed with the opening toward the oil channel so as not to impede oil flow. The bearings should be mated to the same spacers. These parts should all be bagged and tagged and reinstalled exactly as removed. A torque wrench is essential when assembling a diff. You can keep it from rotating by using a pair of 1x2s in a vice as soft jaws. I'd say there is a 50% chance this diff survives.
@ymzedk6 жыл бұрын
If this diff is still functional it, you have been lucky. The lock rings are the ones that determine the carrier side-to-side position, which is pretty important.

Good Video. You obviously did your best. Few missing things that some comments already show. INPUT SHAFT? How to get all original parts out? Checking Backlash b4 putting on the Diff cover? Thanks to the comment below telling us BMWs are 5-6/1000/inch for used rings. Having these in one's complete video would be great, but overall, you gave everyone watching enough info to become confidence to maybe try themselves. Thank you

What i used to use in the chassis shop to rebuild winters quickchange rear ends is i weld a old axle shaft that is cut shorter obviously and weld a horizontal piece of solid steel so you can clamp it in a vice. And drop it on the shaft so you can torque the bolts also i always used a sharpie to mark each one i torqued to keep track

@rotorblade95083 жыл бұрын
I’ve installed a torsen in a 3.64 unit, 100k miles,...and the main bearing preload was ...zero Nm, backlash to maximum limit, the contact patch a bit to off because of the wear i guess. Otherwise it runs well but it would need reconditioning, I couldn’t find a shop to accept such a job (non oem) so maybe I can do it

When refiting circlips please note theere is a correct way round to fit them - look at the holes - you will see the hole is tapered - you need to fit the circlip with the small diameter hole facing outwards ( nearest the circlip pliers) this will allow easy removal of the circlip if you need to remove it. again.

@oldcarskickass6 жыл бұрын
Never ever suggest to use an impact wrench instead of a torque wrench. Its not about damaging the bolts but equalizing the load to the perimeter of the gear. You could have used an extra wrench to avoid the diff from slipping. And if you want to be perfect you could let all the parts (especially the used ones) to soak in gasoline in order for the old oils to dissolve. When u need to assemble parts to toque the surfaces need to be ultra clean. Never ever underestimate the usefullness of the torque wrench and the reason u need to tighten to torque and not more or less or even unequal. Otherwise pretty nice vid.
@kalvincarter17806 жыл бұрын
I was thinking the same. A vice and some microfibres to protect it while clamping would have worked wonders if you wanted to torque to spec. Also, would have used a rubber mallet while fitting bearings. I’m sure a block of wood and hammer does work fine but if you’re going to do a job, take the time and do it properly with the correct tools.

its streetable, but very noisy and agressive. It locks up easily when accelerating too hard through slow turns. Pulling out of parking spots is a bit more difficult.

@mrmalavey10985 жыл бұрын
I've been looking at this also for my 320i but unsure how the traction/stability/abs would act. I want mine as a daily drifter so LSD is the best option but to be fair I'll probably just end up welding the open diff and disabling the driver AIDS 🤗
@alfonsoruiz55755 жыл бұрын
mr malavey ohh okay forsure thats dope but i just want to daily drive my 323i and sometimes swing around a corner or 2 for shits and giggles thats why im curious to see what diff he used and if it fits my specific model
@mrmalavey10985 жыл бұрын
Yeah I've been looking about n there seems to be quite a few on eBay that look kinda like this. I'd much rather go the LSD route as mine is also a daily. Have you heard anything about the ECU needing a different tune so the traction and stability control won't totally override the effect of the LSD or just make ya car brake at random times ?

@BackyardWrenchin7 жыл бұрын
with an m3 diff, you would need to swap out the whole rear end since it does not bolt up to the non-m diff carrier, so it would come out to more $$, you would also need a custom driveshaft to connect the m3 diff to your non-m trans, or m3 tranny + m3 driveshaft

Hello You have to use 75w-140 for The LSD. When You Use 75w90 your diff is asap damaged. 75w90 is not The correct oil for an LSD.
@BackyardWrenchin7 жыл бұрын
+Gerald R That's debatable
@TheRannyG7 жыл бұрын
Yes. But it Works better and The "Verschleiß" is much increase with the 75w 140.
@Murzyn21374 жыл бұрын
@@TheRannyG If it's quaife differential it doesn't need 75W140, just use 75W90. Reasone behind this is that quaife diff doesn't have friction plates as usual LSD, but rather it operates a torsen mechanism, which is purely mechanical, so it can use regular diff oil.
