I just started throwing a P0174 too. Smoke test was good, MAF was clean, recently rebuilt my DISA. All the usual stuff was good. Turned out to be the air pump control valve and gasket. So keep that in your diagnostic arsenal for future reference. And it's an easy fix/replacement too (beside the exhaust manifold near the front).

Excellent video. For the other 5% of cases, there are also three less common o-ring failures you might want to check before buying a new MAF: Dipstick tube upper o-rings (x2), fuel injector lower o-rings (x6), air distribution piece o-rings (x6). Also, if you have a 330 then you have a vacuum actuated exhaust. This is a 3.5 mm line that runs down from the back of the intake manifold to a vacuum canister and through the firewall to the rear of the car. There is also the throttle body gasket and idle control valve grommet, which may leak if reused and not seated properly, respectively. Finally, if your lean codes are set at highway speeds rather than idle then it is more likely to be a soft failing MAF than a vacuum leak.

Thanks a lot for this video. I had just got out of the hospital when my grandsons 2001 325xi started giving him p0171/p0174 codes. I took all the hoses I could get to off and looked for vacuum leaks. I had even taken the intake runner out to get better access to look for other leaks! Didn't know enough to look at the gasket at the time. I only knew that when I sprayed brake fluid into the general area of the intake, I could occasionally get the engine to go rich for a while. It was so tight an area that it was hard to locate exactly where the spray was impacting the leak. I almost gave up and had the car taken to a shop to be smoked when I ran across your video. One viewing of your video and I knew it was the seal on the intake runner. Borrowed an incorrect sized seal from my neighbor and managed to prove it was leaking(couldn't quite get the intake runner shoved back into it's slot-but the seal held). Have ordered a new seal and will be in next week. In any case, your video was instrumental in my fixing his car. BTW, I too broke a rubber housing taking it apart(ironically, BMW had that housing in stock for $22 but wanted $400 for the intake runner because they didn't sell the seal by itself! Thanks again!

MAF, all the hoses, all the boots, the Disa.... Never knew about the oil separator hose... You made my car start back up like normal, after 2 hours of trying to get the damn stupid ass BMW connector off, hate those black squeeze ones... EFFIN A++++++.

great video. One thing you can do to find leaks faster is to attach a glove on the intake boot and attach a hose to the glove. Then i used an electronic cigarette to blow some smoke through the hose i attached to the glove and i found my lower boot and the disa o ring was leaking.

I had vacuum leak on top air boot, my disa also was leaking and the bottom boot was also fixed with electrical tape!!!, i fix these 3 f(including the cabin filter) or less than 50 bucks!!!. Great video! I suspected a vacuum leak but it ended up being a completely failed DISA valve (O-ring was fine) on my 2004 330xi. Hoollllyyy smokes. This was the explanation i needed. In all honesty, this is making the fault deduction process way easier when its explained this way. The mechanics of how these systems operate. I just replaced my alternator and had to remove the air flow system to get to it, (sounded scarier than it axtually was) and aftet i placed everyhting back together, these 2 codes popped up the next day. 2 days after when i had time, i re-removed the air flow system again to make sure EVERYTHING was tightened back correctly, (and replaced my air box filter in the process) then the code dissapeared right after. Fast forward 5 days later, codes are back. So at least i know what im lookin at now after this videos details. TYSM 😊

Hi 50s kid .. buying this 2004 3.25i for my kid has been quite an experience. going from GM to BMW was like swiching from APple to Anroid!! Here's an idea that worked for us to put the car in great condition .. you've never mentioned a smoke test .. but it sometimes would make sense. But I didn't want to do that because I thought of a simiar test .. I bough some 16 inch punk sticks. They are meant to make your house smell good .. but they generate a lot of smoke. I started the engine then moved the punk stick nes possible leak areas. In my case it was the Oil cap leaking. No doubt why it was leaking .. The ccv diaphragm was ripped before I bought it. With your video it was easy to find and fix .. but it must have been that way a long time because the oil cap gasket had a GIANT depression from being sucked in all the time. 50s Kid- you rock! You helped me a lot by doing this video, since I learned where to look to fix a big vacuum leak(s). I just got done replacing my DISA valve and also repaired a crack in the lower boot (just used electric tape around the crack so I wouldn't have to wait to get a replacement boot). Car runs great now.

I replaced my ccv valve and all hoses associated with it about 2 years ago after having burning oil issues, but now the car runs much better. However I did not buy all the right gaskets. I have p0171 and p0174 popping up. I have a hissing leak coming from the intake manifold gasket I believe and I will have to replace it. I could be wrong because It is important to replace and check so many things while doing this I realize, now I will have to tear it all apart again, just hoping I don't break something else! Patience is key thank you for your video.

I fixed one vac leak and made another huge one several weeks ago. Had a bad vacuum leak at the DISA valve, replaced the molded gasket with German Auto Solutions o-ring. Started the car up and it ran about 5x worse than it was. Turned out I roughed up my original upper intake boot up a bit and had a 3.5 inch split in the bottom of it. Got a new upper boot and lower one even though it was replaced 5 years ago and now it runs beautifully with no codes. I had 7 total with the P0171 & P0174 and various cylinder misfires.

Just went through my E46 to fix a vacuum leak and update the ignition system at 141000 miles. After replacing the valve cover gasket, DISA valve, fuel injectors, and several vacuum hoses I still had a rough idle. I finally broke down and replaced the lower hose on the CCV and O-ring on the oil dipstick tube to finally get the vacuum leak fixed. Thanks for pointing out those parts as failure points. Maybe I should have started there first!

I've used a number of your videos to help me out several times. Very clear explanation, very matter-of-fact, very informative. Thank you. I discovered a sneaky air leak... When rebuilding my DISA valve I noticed that the seal on the actuator arm was badly damaged. This is easy to overlook and is not included in the repair kit and leaks a lot of air. I purchased a standard oil seal 22mm dia, 12mm shaft, 6mm thick to fix this.

You explained everything so nice, I’ve had a issue where a plugged in MAF sensor makes car run rough and die after a while with a EVAP Large Leak, yesterday before this video I did a smoke test and found a leak by that little hose near the throttle body, fixed and still same code and it’s driving me nuts after I’ve replaced 75% of the items you’ve said. You did mention some other that I haven’t checked that I will definitely be checking now like the o ring on the oil stick!

Many thanks for a very useful video. My 1999 Z3 2.3 was throwing "O2 sensor adaption limit" codes (as per my Peake R5 FCX3 scan tool). Using this video I was able to quickly isolate the problem as a hole in the lower intake boot which was creating a colossal vacuum leak. I replaced all of the intake boot parts, cleared the codes, and all is now well.

I have been a victim of all of the more common faults. You have been my go to instructor, before I open anything. I wish you a long life, don't want to be out here alone.

My 2002 330i was having an extremely rough idle and sometimes having problems accelerating like it had no power. The engine would even cut out randomly when I was at a stop light. The problem turned out to be my MAF Flap adjuster unit, the flap was snapped off and floating inside the unit. 20 minutes of labor and $150.00 part and my check engine light is gone and my car runs like new!

I have these codes now and my valve cover just started leaking. I will have the gasket replaced on those, hopefully it will fix the issue but will still inspect for other culprit for vacuum leaks you mentioned here. Very informative. Keep it up!

I kept getting those codes and I kept resetting them with my bluetooth scanner. I knew that it was some sort of vac leak due to the fact I would hear a whistle sound under acceleration. Now that I have time; I will be addressing these issues. Great informative video!

I had the maf cleaned, plugs tightened filters replaced or cleaned my car runs great it makes a sound that I don't like when I turn the car off.. Codes wont clear, time to check for vacuum leak.

Had P0171 and 174 for the last 6 months... engine just started to idle horribly and starts to die if I don't let it idle until warm (while pushing the throttle above 1k RPMs because it's sitting around 500 RPM shoddily otherwise). Replacing the DISA, ICV, and intake boot tomorrow using your videos. Thanks so much for such quality material.

Had a vehicle come into my shop with all the same issues, I replaced the DIsa valve, replace the crankcase hoses and pvc system also, the intake hose. The intake hose had its common leak, I replaced that. I then found the crankcase problems tube to the dipstick was broken, still had a problem, I then smoked the intake with a smoke machine no leaks found. After looking and looking I narrowed it down to the brake booster which had an internal leak. I tested it by unplugging it and the capping it off idle remained normal, no codes. Now I need to learn more about the VANOS repair, your videos are very informative and thank you!

Now i just have to figure out whats causing the odd rattling sound coming out of the exhaust pipes on cold starts. not too worried cuz it goes awy when it warms up.... but....

Thank you after taking my 2004 530i to a crooked repair shop for an oil and transmission service they proceeded to tell me .Have a bad switch on my transmission $$154 part $4200 to fix..Small oil leak they wanted $2200 to re-seal my oil pan.. Unbelievable.So they refused to change the tranny fluid charged me $125 for checking ..And faulty I-drive to check $125 allegedly did a reset pressed 2 buttons...After doing an oil change Ac/recharge wheel alignment and installing 4 tires I bought.. Charged me $809 no lights were on in my car 1 day after driving Service engine light soon comes on ..I refuse to bring my car back to these crooks..Service engine codes read these same codes you speak about. I bought a code reader off Amazon and cleared them...I will check for some of the symptoms you showed ...Thank you

First of all, thanks for running more than excellent channel. On my euro spec (no aux air pump) e46 330ci, I had a whistling sound under partial load and occasional lean codes. I have since replaced my CCV, intake and throttle gaskets, intake hoses, checked the ICV and pligged ports, checked the brake booster line amd check valve, EVAP lines etc. Disa O-ring is tight. I smoke tested it with a glove over the MAF (which I also cleaned out with the designated spray) and it seemed al right, the nitrile glove even remained inflated. Still, I can hear a whistle under partial throttle/load and it will occasionally throw a lean code (both banks). Vanos was overhauled/resealed and valve cover gasket replaced at the same time. Oh, and both O2 sensors are new. I'm out of ideas, please chime in if you could. FPR vacuum lines maybe?

Thank you, great video! I had both codes P0171 and P0174 for a few weeks now and finally found the reason to be number 3 on your video. Breather hose coming from oil separator/CCV to oil dipstick looked like it was trampled... Changed it and after that no fault codes referring to air leaks.

I have owned my 2002 BMW 325csi since new, and am having the vacuum fault code occur regularly, and now a rough firing engine, with the fault code on my OBD reader indicating this problem. This is excellent information for me, and as I am a long time hobby mechanic, I will check out all the potential sources of the cause. Thanks again... ... Fortunately, my 1966 Lotus Elan does not have these type of problems.... Dual Web Carbs and "O" rings on the intake manifold are all that I have to check.... oh well !!!!

excellent video. I didn't have a code come up but my 04 325xi was running like garbage and eventually died. just before it started to die out it was making a clunking noise when the rpms would bounce low. my culprit was oil separator return to oil dipstick hose.it was broken in half and dripping oil which also explains my oil consumption. $23 at the dealer. I also changed intake boots as they were cracked almost all of the way through the ribs. thanks again. my car is running better than when I bought it. idle is holding steady

After watching this video and reading the comments i went back outside and pulled the secondary check valve out and inspected the little gasket and noticed it wasnt sitting on one of the two 10mm studs and was only sitting on just 1 smh SOOOO obviously it wasnt seated properly and i could actually see the soot on the gasket where it was escaping. Hopeing now that this is sealed off maybe now the lean codes will vanish. I have the legendary p171 p174 and also p 430....😮😮😮iam in such shock that iam afraid to go back outside and start her up...i cant believe the gasketbwas on wrong n a healthy amont of carbon on the gasket shows exactly where it was leaving...that has tobbe enough especially especially at 2500 rpms...🎉🎉🎉look at me i cant shutup!!!! ....all thanx to this video!!! 50zzz KID😊😊

This video is amazing, thanks for all the valuable info. I deep cleaned my air filter, air box, and tightened the intake boot to the MAF. I got these codes after driving my 2004 BMW X3 3.0i through some crazy muddy logging roads, puddles, mud. Can’t seem to get the codes to trip now. Definitely going to check the connection to the oil separator, I think mines broken. Have a shaky engine upon startup, and 700ish RPM at idle. Cleaned oil from underneath the oil separator today and didn’t even realize that could be the issue. Thanks for the video, seriously.

Also Kid the connection between the exhaust manifold and the muffler junction. After watching your videos and performing the repairs I was still having a code but this time for some unexplained reason a P0174 code showed up. So I heard you talk about leaks around that area that can cause a problem and sure it did carnal ... the other two Ox sensors are located close to the exhaust leak causin the pitot effect drawing more air than registered. Hey 50's kid. I'm also a 50's kid with a recently acquired 2002 E46 330Ci Cpe. You produce awesome videos, and I've learned a LOT. The car is throwing a P2096 Post Catalytic Fuel Trim System Too Lean Bank 1 error, so I cannot get it smoged. I'm a mechanical engineer, but alas I don't have the time to DIY. I'm looking for someone like you in the San Fernando Valley who is proficient on BMW's; namely upgrading DME firmware and diagnosing vacuum leaks? I took the car into an indy repair shop and they quoted me a ridiculous $1,300 to do what I consider a costly trial by error fix; replace the two post cat O2 sensors ($500) and the ICV ($350) + labor ($450). From my understanding, the sensors cost ~$80 each and the ICV can be cleaned. The car has a K&N intake filter, and on inspection the post MAF intake boots are clean, soft, and pliable, but that's as far as I went. Can you provide a referral?

Get video - thank you - really appreciate. Big crack in the lower intake boot and the DISA gasket looks sketchy. On our 330ci, removing the electrical connector from the DISA unit requires unlatching metal clip connector from the motor side of the connector.

thanks to your video i found a vacuum leak on my 2000 328CI car run's great now and it's started to get better fuel mileage and I have learned to do more work on my own car saving a ton of "dinero" you know "much mula" and that's great

Thank You! I have already replaced a few parts that have helped in various ways (MAF, purge valve sensor, thermostat, spark plugs, the list goes on), but my main issue is still not fixed. I will be checking these parts. I was told to check them, but didn't know exactly what to check. I will be pricing all of these parts before I even go check, because I'm fairly certain you have given me the answer I have been looking for!
