Here's a plan! Buy 4 Oil Filters for my BMW E46 and pull them apart to determine which Oil Filter is the best. That is over $100 worth of Oil Filters, and you will be AMAZED by what I find!
I compare BMW E46 Oil Filters from BMW, Mann, Hengst, and a performance Oil Filter From AFE Power.

About 170,000 miles. You're fooling no one. Any engine made in the last 30 years or longer will go that far, with a couple of specific exceptions. All you need to do is change the oil and drive normal.

I changed my oil, cabin air and air intake filter this tuesday on my bmw. Had it done by BMW before. The old cabin air filter had the Mann Filter logo and BMW logo side by side. I have used exclusively Mann Filters on all my cars so far, never had any issues. The Thermostat and Radiator where Mahle/Behr on my old BMW btw.

This is exactly the video I was looking for, the comparison between BMW, MANN, and Hengst. Another video stated that Hengst was the better filter compared with MANN.

Thx for the lab experiment. Was curious about the Mann filter. I've heard that Mann actually made the labeled filters for BMW before and it sure looks as though that was accurate. Would like to add 1 important factor about "flow" which I am no expert at, however there are some YT vids that I've seen where some other filters caused some noisy issues which was hard to run down and made many ppl think they had some major mechanical issues. Warning others to check their oil filters before spending hefty prices at the garages only to find an inferior oil filter was the culprit. Apparently the filters in question that were inferior caused a restriction in oil flow damanded with RPMs (sounded rather nasty too). BUT I would imagine that experiment would take either some sophisticated equipment or sent to a lab which may be costly. I guess one with an accurate oil pressure guage rigged in line on car could be a method also but not willing to myself lol. Oh and um glad you didn't interupt your wife's vaccuming experiment over yours because I look forward to your next vid. I don't think a full body cast matches your eyes or your BMWs interior lol. Cheers.

Instead of one at a time for $9 each I decided to buy 4 from a eBay seller which gets them down a bit per filter. I just received my eBay order of 4 Mann 925/4 filters today and they say "Made in Mexico. I could have sworn the last one I installed said Germany. So being a OCD technical geek I found your video which is great. You can add Mahle to the OE suplier list which I use in my 996. i believe they are made in Austria altough as of late I'm also hearing China. The 4 Mann filters I received today have the same 64 pleat count as the OE BMW and Mann filters you shown and I'm sure regardless of where Mann filters are made either in Germany, Mexico, or now China (topic for another day), the whole operation is automated by special filter making machines so it's pretty much hands off and as much as I to get hung up on wanting my filters to be "made in Germany" like my car at the end of the day what matters it's the company name and reputation that stands behind it. All companies are looking to cut manufacturing and logistics costs. Me being in the US mages sence to receive the ones made in NA. Now after watching your video I almost want to send the Mann's back and order the Hengst.

Can't go wrong with Hengst, that's all I use. There are some tests regarding their air filters by a youtuber, and it seems to perform the best out of the big brand names (air filtration), including some OEM mercedes and bmw filters.

Thanks for the thorough video! Purflux and Mahle (Knecht) should also be reputable suppliers, if they are also available for this vehicle. The Mahle OX187 filter for the S54 has quite a funky appearance!

I don't think I've ever seen a filter comparison where Hengst didn't end up on the highest top. Top three filter manufacturers in my eyes are: no.1 Hengst, no.2 Mahle, no.3 Mann Filters. (However, I experience Mann a bit like a falling star. I no longer have 100% faith in their quality. Hengst is in a different league in comparison).

Mann will filter the best and block some HP of your car 100000000%! In my opinion you need high flow filter with good filtration!! Mahle is the one!! Hengst is made in Poland!! Not Germany as the video man said !! And is low quality!! I see glue licks in their oil and air filters!! And materials a bit crappy

In California and possibly other states, you can get a free oil filter voucher from the hazardous waste management department. There is a washable oil filter available for the e46, but the concept is fundamentally suspicious to me. I would use a washable filter for air and cabin. Try actually testing filtration

There is VERY little info. on the web, even in 2022, on Genuine BMW Oil Filters vs. OEM/Aftermarket. I used to use Mann or Mahle oil filters for my BMW M30 and M50 engines. Then I decided to buy a Genuine BMW oil filter. I noticed the Genuine BMW filter was made by Mahle. I previously had a Mahle I removed from an oil change. The Genuine BMW filter had smaller metal holes on the interior cylinder than the Mahle filter. The BMW one clearly had more intricacy and higher demands for filtration and justified the price. Weight has to be spot-on in order to get BMW stamp - I was told this by a major US BMW autoparts supplier, Bav Auto, who's sales rep used to work at a auto parts manufacturing company responsible for widgets. He told me, if you really want your car to last, go with genuine BMW, if you just want to get by for a few years, go with the cheaper stuff. The BMW stamp, is not just paying for the stamp, or the dealer's overhead, there is more to it that very few know.

In the case of your filters, that may be true, but there is no discernable difference in the Mann and BMW filters for the E46 M54 engine application.

I am not a fan of the filters with the plastic end caps, they don't seem to drain the oil from the oil filter housing as much, I find when I remove the cap, it would over flow a lot more when a plastic end cap filter is used. I stick to Mann / Mahle.

I had an M54 engine that was throwing occasional low oil pressure warnings when the engine was hot at idle. For the hell of it I replaced the installed Hengst filter with a Wix oil filter and the low oil pressure warnings went away. Unlike the Hengst the Wix filter has small o-rings at each end of the filter to help it seal. Maybe that made a difference.
