Before I strip down the engine and rebuild it, it needs to be taken out. The engine ran OK, but most likely needs some attention before hitting the race track, since it has 170,000 miles on it.

Really helps this video, can I tear down the engine before taking it out like the top half at least as I feel like it would be easier?

It isn't really easier taking the head off first. There isn't much room to get to the rear bolts and there's a bracket on the back of the cylinder head. You might as well pull the whole motor first, in my opinion.

@@rainvillecreative5410I’ve got an M57 engine so it might be different but best thing to get radiator and and pulleys off first. Go from there then.

What bolt size did you end up using and where did you end up getting them?

Good job. No hoses or wires left behind and ripped. You should just kswap it 🤷♂️. Easier to work on, smaller and lighter.

In all seriousness, there are reasons to keep the stock motor. The most any of the classes allow is a motor swap from the same manufacturer, so just BMW. This 3 liter makes decent power as is, around 230 hp, and with fairly minor adjustments like headers can do 250 easily, with some reports of 400+ whp with no turbo. Forged crank and rods is stock- I'm not sure why people don't seem to do much with these motors, actually. I would certainly be interested in a k series motor at some point, probably in a lighter car though- MR2 was definitely a good choice for yourself.
