On the vanos solenoids? not so far, the vanos has been operating without issue. I might look at doing a video in the future though

I've got the throttle actuator issue... It's intermittent when they start failing... Usually it will fail the start up test and go into limp mode.. No rough idle or associated codes for that one Dirty air filters tend to make mine idle higher... It settles quicker and lowers once they are clean... Tied into this is a high idle and that is for raising the catalytic temps when you're stationary which is normal... This doesn't tend to cause rough idle issues but still worth checking if you have issues and also part of regular maintenance I've had 2 coil failures and if you're gonna swap these it's worth doing a plug change while everything is off Fantastic video, start with the smaller easier stuff and definitely worth getting a scan tool to narrow down issues 👍

Rough idle from throttle body actuators comes with a slew of error codes but ultimately they are not helpful other than to indicate you need replacement of these units all together. The key to this issue is the continual surging idle at standing as it continues to hunt for an idle spot on the RPM. You can be unlucky like me and also have idle body actuator failure as well and on the other bank complicating the repair no end as you can’t diagnose which bank failure it is. Since you have to go deep to replace them (top engine dismantle of plenums and many hoses) and usually the age, it’s best to replace all four throttle body and idle actuators at once which is pricey and will cost you US$3200 in parts alone in the US. Once done you have confidence the new parts will last a long time and also being easier and faster to repair than fiddling with gears etc during a repair that may ultimately not work if the internal board has failed. There is a shop in the UK that does changeover repairs on these but if your not in the UK the time for shipping is too long to wait with the engine dismantled.

Yep interesting but the good thing was it didn’t effect the driving of the car but only in idle. It doesn’t go to limp mode which is good so you have time to organize yourself for the repair. Once you get to the dismantle (you can see other videos online) you will appreciated why you want to do them all at once as going back in is so much work for little gain. Next up is the rod bearings, something not for the faint hearted.

Great vids really informative, mine sometimes almost stalls when taking off normally, i have to tap the gas to take off which then ends in a very unruly clutch engagement, any ideas?

Thanks man. It could be any number of issues, possibly SMG clutch engagement issue. Scan for codes, try an SMG reset to reinitialise the slip detection and go from there

In canada our premium fuel is 91 . Husky is 94 but has ethanol added. Sucks we can't get higher octane here.

91 in Canada is the same as 95 RON (euro) octane. Thats the minimum octaine you’d want to run in these engines but it’s fine👍

The only time I've had a rough idle, it only happened on hot starts and after I started moving the idle would smooth out the next time I came to a complete stop. I did a test and found my VANOS solenoids had low quality, after replacing those, I never had the idle issue again

Yes, good point with the vanos causing issues too! Even the solenoid O rings can present issues too

The heater valve lives under the expansion tank

my m5 has that problem but sometimes i just turn it off and on and the problem disappears and the mechanic can't find what the problem is

Hi mate i have horrendous fuel economy in traffic 7/8 mpg or 30L/100k however on the open road its fine gettning around 11. my s85 also stalls if left idling for more than a few minutes. it had a cylinder 4 misfire code stored but has not come back. Do you have any suggestions for fault tracing this. i suspect it may be early signs of a failing ionic unit

Sounds like ignition coil 4 may be failing? I would start by swapping the coil and see if the code for ignition coil moves, and go from there, if that’s the only code you have. If the coil is failing it’s likely you are ready for a new set of spark plugs too kzfaq.info/get/bejne/gpOXf9Nk2s2xfX0.html

@@MTechGuy Turns out it was the ionic module. Last mechanic didnt bolt the ground back on and its obviously fried the module. no more misfire just chasing a slight stumble in the idle. assuming its vanos solenoid orings

@@alexbryant5 Good you found the issue, shame about the ionic module! Carry out a VANOS solenoid test with a scan tool, that should identify if one isn’t performing due to failing, or just a bad oring

@@MTechGuythanks for your response! I have performed the tests and the results seem to vary quite a bit. I've done a bleed procedure to see if that fixes anything. How do you distinguish between a failed oring and faulty solenoid. I do have the old black ones

@@alexbryant5 Process of elimination, if the O-rings look alright then it’s likely the solenoids themselves have failed. If you have the old style black solenoids, it’s likely they’re failing, the later silver coloured ones seem to hold up better. Make sure to check the VANOS oil pressure is good before replacing any solenoids
