Technically, if you are looking for replacements, BMW calls the filters Non-return valves. Internally there is a spring and diaphragm to prevent the oil from leaking back to the sump. I believe the idea is to maintain a supply at the Vanos solenoid. The filter screens should not get clogged if you do oil changes every 7.5k to 10K Kms ( approx: 6000 miles) using a top grade synthetic. If you don't, then the filters will clog with coked oil and this will precipitate all sorts of engine issues. Also, if you have high mileage on the engine, like 300,000 Km, you need to replace them, since the diaphragm will begin to leak, causing Vanos faults.

if you have a N55 motor, these filters are now part of the Vanos solenoids, here are the comments from FCP Euro web site; " This solenoid is an updated design, introduced in the N55 engine, which includes integrated non-return valves and screens which were previously installed separately on the cylinder head. This technical update allows for fewer oil passages in the cylinder head and with other major improvements to the VANOS hubs allow for quicker adjustment times. The integrated screen filter in these solenoids prevents sticking due to particles in oil."

Thanks for the video. All others just say change the Vanos solenoids or camshaft bearings. I could not find anything about these filters. The Vanos filter is a filter and check valve. Its best to replace them after having Vanos solenoid codes.

@fab-b98187 жыл бұрын
Hey, just had a look at your video. It's pretty strange. How is your battery ? When have the plugs been done ? You can check the vanos filters, it can only do good to clean them up, at least you'll know if they're in good condition or not. I think the problem might come from the AC itself, as if the compressor stopped and started again in the fraction of a second, hense making the idle change. Your engine seems to be running smoothly so see if you can invsetigate in that direction.
@alannkevin7 жыл бұрын
Anyone can do that ! so I took the cover and everything, and checked the eccentric shaft sensor that is the first thing you see before the spark plugs, and is clean, also I cleaned the filters and I found the problem... the spark plugs were destroyed ... they were burnt like beef jerky, so replaced all six of em and it's fixed

I had the same issue on my 2008 X3, with 150K miles. After spending an inordinate amount of time attempting to remove the first vanos filter. I removed the underside plastic engine splash shield and placed a pan to capture any oil. I then cranked the engine over and immediately shut it off. The surge of oil pressure pushed the filter out along with about a 1 quart of oil. This is how I was able to remove & replace the vanos filters (one at a time) as the inner fender on 2008 X3 is not removable

Hi. I have a 2009 BMW 335i. It has a trouble code P052B - cold start ‘A’ camshaft position timing over retarded bank 1. I replaced both Vanos solenoids that are located on the front of the engine, and did this procedure for both filters as well. The code keeps coming back instantly. When you first start the car, the idle is kinda rough and RPMs fluctuate. But it eventually turns into normal idling after about 30secs - 1 minute. What do you think the problem is? Anyone else had a similar problem to mine?

Hi i have the exact same problem with... cold start engine n52 e61 2006 530i. for the first few seconds the engine is really rough running then it quiets down with a little bit of variance in the idle speed and after 30 seconds it runs beautifully.. mind you already changed all spark plug (now have 4 points) ngk iridium , coils, i changed big disa valve (flap was broken and lose) .. i am about to change ccv system and small disa valve and intake gaskets .. but currently problem still persists did you find the cause to your specific rough running cold start problem? btw i do not have any codes.. in about a week can check codes again..

Jean Saris 153 i have removed the return valves but they were already clean i did use brake cleaner to clean but same rough start is there . now i moving my investigation to the intake system again. i have cleaned the throttle body as it was covered in oil.. but i did not put it back together again because the big disa valve which i already replaced has metal pin and because disa was broken the metal pin could still be in the intake. if it is sucked in the engine then it could cause catastrophic failure to the engine @ jean do you see any fault codes anyone have any idea about the cause -
