Thanks for the guide, I removed my fan without having to take the airbox out. I completely removed the anti-roll bar as I was doing the work on axle stands and it was in the way. Then I removed the plastic wheel arch trim to let more light in and aid access. The worst part of the job is getting coolant dripping into your face! The water pump single top torx bolt is awkward to get a good angle on. Once you have it all out, the new parts go back in easy enough, I fitted the thermostat first and then the pump. I connected a 10A capable charger and ran the bleed process, the new pump could be heard working. I used an OEM Pierburg pump and behr thermostat. 2006 E90 323i N52 (Japan Import)

No to air box removal. Yes, to dropping sway bar. Also move the power steering line and hanger tab. I'm working extra tight, 128i, 2012, N52. Also doing belt, tensioner and idler. The tensioner bolt is known to sag and if you leak oil from filter housing the belt will feed into the main and hand grenade the engine. Replacing plastic coolant flag on front of engine with aluminum Rein (next to tensioner). It will fail and leave you on the side of the road. Finally, an oil change while I'm there.

For future information if the torx bolts are not being used to bolt the head down to the block then you dont have too replace the bolts. Same goes for the starter bolts.

@@zureai If they were the head bolts, crank bolt, or any kind of internal bolt id say yes, but being there are 3 bolts that hold up the water pump I'd say it doesn't matter. I didn't use new bolts when I replaced mine 2 years ago, and it's just fine.

No, That is why it is called an "ELECTRIC" Waterpump. It is independent of the belt entirely. Very genius. This is so the car can continue circulating coolant 5-10 minutes after the car is shut off to continue cooling. Meanwhile, belt driven water pumps turn off with the car, meaning you're cooking your gaskets until the car cools off. Scary when you think about it. Another reason I only buy BMWs. Easy to work on & full of great features.

Im not following why you removed the airbox and fan...This entire job is done from underneath the car. Why complicate things?? Even your radiator hoses can stay in place (other than removing them from the water pump and thermostat).
@TOMAHAWK813
@TOMAHAWK813 3 жыл бұрын
For room. Doing it from the bottom would complicate things even more and you wouldn’t be able to get it done without taking the fan out. It’s a really tight fit in there and everything I did was necessary. Airbox needs to come out to take the fan out from the top. I don’t know anyone that has done this without taking the fan out. All rad hoses need to go as well to get the fan out easier. That’s all the easy part.

its easier to maneuver and simple to remove. thats all. I've done a radiator without touching the airbox, but if you can get yourself a bit of extra room for not a lot of extra work, it can be worth it.
