crosstrainingenduro.com Beware of the 'fatal flaw' if you own a 2014 to 2017 BMW GS1200 and this issue hasn't been picked up.
0:44 The funnier side of riding BMWs
2:12 BMW Fatal Flaw & other recalls
3:30 Our GS1200 first impression
Any authorised BMW service should have fixed it already. This is not a BMW GS1200 review, we'll do one later. Welcome to Cross Training Adventure, we are into all things dual sport and adventure on the east coast of Australia on adventure bikes like the BMW GS1200... with occasional detours to places like Vietnam, Cambodia, Romania and Canada. Last year I did a video about the BMW GS1200 common problems. There is a growing belief that the quality has been steadily dropping since the year 2000. And this concern about BMW GS1200 known issues has been backed up by BMW GS1200 mechanics and many long-term owners. I looked back over my notes from last year about some BMW recalls and GS1200 known issues. This is one of our three channels, there's also a Cross Training Trials channel, and a Cross Training Enduro channel. All three are equally dodgy. And now we discuss the BMW Fatal Flaw. We are the 27th most watched dirt channel in Uzbekistan. Have there been a lot of BMW GS1200 recalls? We have won the polished turd award five years in a row for riding adventure bikes like the BMW GS1200. And we have a world record 25 class action lawsuits for inaccurate information, but none for the BMW Fatal Flaw. We think the whole motorbike scene is getting too commercial. BMW examined his BMW GS1200 fork problem. So called dual sport riding reviews are just glossy ads nowdays. Everyone is trying to sell you stuff you don't need, convince you to buy the latest model with anodized coffee cup holders for your trips to the coffee shop. And later? A BMW GS1200 review. Of course if you are cashed up and into bling, go for the adventure bikes like the BMW GS1200. All we are saying is there's also the budget option for adventure riding. And it won't hold you back. Why? We reckon it's 80% the rider and 20% the bike. I looked a bit deeper into the front fork issue. It has become known as the BMW Fatal Flaw just one of the BMW GS1200 common problems. So the Cross Training Adventure focus is just get out there and have fun on two wheels. Instead of obsessing over the latest blinged out Beemer, which tyres to fit or spending a fortune on your suspension or billet alloy gas cap. So most of our adventure riding vids will feature the much loved bush pig, the Suzuki DR650. And we've done a 10 part series on how to unleash the mighty beast that lurks within. What else? BMW GS1200 known issues... Cross Training Adventure actively avoids sponsorship. We like doing seriously critical reviews like the BMW GS1200 fork problem. They asked 150,000 GS1200 owners to return their motorbikes for a 'service'... it turned into a GS1200 recall. Manufacturers make some really bad mistakes. and there is a lot of dodgy crap being sold out there. Instead of glowing dual sport reviews for kickbacks or free product, we will try to keep the buggers honest. So subscribe. Or don't subscribe to our Cross Training Adventure riding channel. The main thing is get out and ride while you can with dual sport riding or Adventure riding in Australia, Canada, Vietnam, Romania and beyond! So check out Cross Training Adventure.

Mexico border to Canada and then San Francisco to East Coast ... the GS12 worked flawlessly. Not the best for off-road however, and, as the BMW instructor in one of our work shops said, "They are mostly a street bike than can do some off-road." I agree. I have done off-road on my GS12, but would rather take a lighter and dedicated off-road motorcycle. PS. Regardless, this video made me laugh so hard because it was so damn funny!!! Esp. the comment about the $7,000 BMW jackets "on sale." LOOL! Priceless! One last thing, when I finally arrived home in my ride across America, I posed in front of a Starbucks and posted it on social media with the caption: "Rode my GS across America just so I can get a Starbucks frappucinno!"

And herein lies the secret. Your motorcycling happiness is dependent on your expectations and your experiences. While we listen and see what others do and say, we live with what we think and feel. If you find it spectacular, then that’s mission accomplished. It’s absurd to expect a better outcome than that.

Hey James, glad you could have a laugh! I'm actually really happy when BMW owners love their bikes. But it's kind of an 'in' joke making fun of the GS. And the same for KTM on our enduro channel. 😂 I've actually enjoyed the short rides on my brother's GS1200 and hope to get a few more in!

@@crosstrainingadventure Thanks for the comment. I love my GS, and it has taken me reliably to far away places, but I also appreciate and laugh when people point out the flaws of these heavy bikes that somehow people do take off-road. I've taken my GS off-road but it is not my preferred bike! Good point about Brett Tkacs. Same with Big Rock Moto. I really enjoyed your video and could not stop laughing in agreement when you made the comment about the "$7,000" BMW jacket and gear and only "when it is on sale." Truly priceless! :)

I just rode my 2015 GSA on the gnarliest mountain trails of central otago NZ with zero issues. Performed like a beast but was of course heavy to handle (and pick up). Then rode all the way up to the top of the north island. Love it!! (Dry sand and wet river sand are extremely hard work, but everything else awesome!) First time to hear of the fork issue so will check in. Don’t be scared. You will love this bike.

I have one and a DR. Mine is a 2015, I bought used from some movie producer who bought it, farkled it out, took a trip on it and sold it to me. It is a GSA with everything and I got it at a steal. It has been absolutely flawless. Only problem, the wiring cover on the loom coming from the left hand control cover got brittle and flaked off in places. It is perfect for any road or gravel roads. Fire trails can be tricky, pick your line and commit. Single track? Now there is your adventure. Oh boy what a handful. But I have a Bush pig and a KTM for that frivolity.

As a 2010 R1200GSA owner (no pesky fork issues) and having ridden my bike in many and varied conditions and on many and varied roads, your assessment is about right. While big, heavy and tall they can be coaxed along difficult off-road situations with relative ease and are pretty capable if their size and weight is taken into account. I'd suggest shorter, less experienced dirt riders need not apply or stick with smaller bikes, but I've bashed mine through almost of Mt Mee's main dirt roads without issue and ridden around in some more serious stuff between Canberra and the NSW mid-coast and back following blokes on KTM1150s and such. Confidence in the bike and your abilities is paramount - conditions as shown in this video would really be a doddle with a bit of momentum and trust that the big girl can do it. They are almost without par for quick, point-to-point sealed (Australian) back roads and dirt road touring, two-up and/or loaded to the gunwales. I've done a tour to Tassie, around Tassie and back to Brisvegas on mine with my partner and all of our stuff and it was a superb and entirely fuss-free experience - we found every back road and dirt road we could and had a ball, nothing broke, nothing stopped working, nothing fell off. If you rang me up and said let's do a forestry road loop from (for example) Mt Mee to Peachester to Sunday Ck road to Kenilworth and then back on the dirt to Kilcoy, I'd do it on the Beemer in a heartbeat. Although, it might be prudent to wait for the Peachester section to dry out - that red mud is not traversable on any bike...

I've owned a 2007 GSA 1200 since new and have done 250k km without a rebuild although it's due for one now. Agree in tough off-road it's horrid. It's great on gravel, dirt roads. Terrible in soft sand, slippery mud or clay or really rocky. That doesn't mean I don't do that, but it's not an enduro bike, it's a road tourer with can do offroad.

I have never owner a Beemer but my brother has owned several. They all had issues, and when BMW was approached the answer was always the same; "Really? that's never happened before". Of course when Tony jumped on the forums he would find out it was common and happening around the world. BMW customer service is virtually nil, and for this reason alone I wouldn't touch one, new or used, with a barge pole. Its no as though there are not good alternatives.

I’ve owned a 2017 GS 1200 and absolutely loved it. Sold last year mainly because I needed the funds. Main negatives were that it’s big and heavy & annual services costs. Also owned a 2012 Vstrom 650 and found it to be a very nice bike with adequate power. Had to add a fork brace to it because it felt wonky at highway speeds. Has a tendency to get blown around. Chain noise was gawd awful too. Sold 7 yrs later for the BMW. Think I will go for the Moto Guzzi V85tt next.

Compare a KLR to a R1200GS is ridiculous. 2 very different sizes and types of motorcycles. And KLR is the most unremarkable motorcycle in the industry. It's not a great street motorcycle and certainly not great in the dirt. But is sufficient in both. I am a motorcycle technician retired and you need to compare your KLR to a 700 Yamaha tenere. Closer to the same class. And in that comparison. The KLR can't hold a candle to the superior machine. The R1200GS is a great motorcycle. Does exactly what it is designed for. And compared to a Enduro class motorcycle is absolutely ridiculous. But coming from a KLR owner point of view. If you were a capable rider. You wouldn't be riding a KLR in the 1st place. Terrible machine.

Back in the day ( 1970) the BMW was the best built, most reliable and longest lasting bike available for a long distance trip down the West Coast and into Mexico and beyond. My R 75/5 weighed about 415 lbs, had shaft drive, a 5th gear, and relatively long travel suspension. Reliability was superior to anything else available and the bike was simple to service with a few common hand tools. The low center of gravity afforded by the boxer engine made the BMW safer and easier to ride on dirt tracks. It was light enough to pick up or ride out of a ditch. Somehow BMW abandoned that formula and moved on to ever bigger, heavier, and more complicated bikes. Today’s big boxers are like the dinosaurs: an evolutionary dead end. They have become status symbols and have lost their core competencies. Remember, if you can’t pick it up by yourself then it is too big for solo travel.

These big recliners on wheels serve a purpose that can't be matched with a small single cylinder bike and vice versa.. If you be honest about what you're going to do with the bike then you will get the bike to fit that need. But if you get one of these and expect it to be awesome at single track or as easy to toss around off road like a motocross bike you're clearly delusional.. Love the videos !! Before I was married and had a mortage, I had a brand new R1150GS. It was a great “all around” sport touring bike. A sport touring bike that could happily crush dirt roads. My only complaint was the weight. But honestly, I liked the bike. I used to do a lot of overnight trips back then and it was great. “No it isn’t a Harley Davidson” 😄 The GSA is an impressive tourer but they are expensive and have no soul. They will also go well on mild dirt roads. Anything more serious off road will only be through more hard work, fear and stubbornness more so than pleasure. Still quite capable in the hands of the experts like Bret Tkacs but even he wouldn’t do aggressive off-road it. This should be no surprise as there is no unicorn. Did I mention it has no soul?

I had a RT for 25 trouble free years from new, until a couple of weeks ago when I was relieved of the bike during the middle of the night. I’m very uncertain about replacing the bike, new bikes are full of computers that will never last 25 years and there is so much more to go wrong especially combined with the poor build quality since 2000- the Ewan and Charlie factor. I almost wish that KTM gave them the bikes they asked for in first place. Maybe I’ll keep an eye out for a low mileage R1100/1150 GS/RT, if there is such a possibility. Not sure I’ll be around in 25 years time to see if the new bike computers stood the test of time.

While it was just out of warranty for time but well within warranty for mileage, dealer didn't want to help. When I posted on FB GS groups, I found many who had similar issue over various 2012- GS years. That's a shame, Lee. In the long term, it's much better for the brand if dealers, the distributors and the factory are interested in issues, find out if it's a defect, fix it, then provide support to affected customers. Every brand seems to have their good and bad moments when it comes to this process. You would hope 'premium' brands would do it every time. 😢

I don't know, I'm sure there will be a few. The main sticking points from many owners is that servicing/parts costs a fortune and overall quality seems to be dropping slowly since the 2000s.

Thank you@@crosstrainingadventure I hear that in almost all the videos I've watched and I've no doubt about that. The quality issue i think is common across the board. It's just ridiculous. Actually the big Beemer is my brother's. A friend sold it to him very cheaply but unfortunately it's at that age where quite a few things are starting to go wrong with it and it's cost around $3000 in the past year. 🤔 He still loves riding it but is gritting his teeth over the running costs, even when doing the work himself. E.g. getting the shock in the front suspension fixed was still AUD1600 even though he stripped the bike down and sent the shock interstate. It would have cost $3000 at the local dealership.

And replacing the telelever and paralever suspensions on a big GS costs just as much as they do on their cars. I was considering buying a nice used GS with low miles but then I come to my senses. SWM did the same thing for the RS650 and Superdual “ they called it a warranty replacement “ basically one ☝️ of the oil screen filters fell apart in the engine causing at least 6-8 bikes I know off ( in Australia ) I run the SWM fb page 📄 and also had inside info on this . I was one of the first Superdual owners in Australia back in 2017 . Lucky 🍀 mine filter just was broken- didn’t fall apart . Also in the same Warranty upgrade was the rear subframe bolts snapping- stems from the old Husky TE 630 days . Anyway screen filters , subframe bolts were replaced and engines rebuilt or replaced ( in SWM,s defence ) I guess warranty recall sounds BAD . They have been the only known 2 main issues to date ( besides the bolts stripping out on the airbox when over tightening-also a carry over problem from the TE630 . Generally a pretty sound bike . The 300 and 500,s to my knowledge haven’t had any one ☝️ main outstanding issues especially since around 2016 , some mapping problems in earlier models .
@crosstrainingadventure
@crosstrainingadventure 2 жыл бұрын
Damn. Did they fix it for the 2018 models or did it take SWM a while to get on top of it? I know an unspecified amount of the engine is manufactured in China so my first thought is Chinese oil screen filters? If there are only two main problems so far that is pretty good going though. I've been close to buying one a few times....

@@crosstrainingadventure No engines made in Italy as is frames , wheels , suspension, brakes to my knowledge only plastics and some other electrical components made in China ( like most brands ) Yes the screen was replaced with a MUCH more solid filter , the old one ☝️ you could crush between your fingers but the replacement you could not , the rear lower subframe bolts were replaced with a higher grade bolt , some other isolated problems is blown fork seals , Headsteam bearing not seated correctly, mapping had to be updated in 2018 ( as went euro 4 from 3 and down low would stall out ) RS and 2017 Superdual tank crossover taps would break easy - I fixed with a IMS better quality ones . This problem was fixed in 2018 with a different design. And ABS from 2018 onwards on the rear ( on dirt was over sensitive) if you didn’t switch it off - rear only front stayed on , some owners made a toggle switch on the bars to switch front off as well . Unfortunately SWM May not be making the Superdual anymore due to euro 5 and the engine not being able to meet this . Australia May still get them and US and other markets that don’t have strict emission regulations. We actually got the last delivery of RS650,s that we’re euro 3 and we’re sold back in 2019 for around 8000 I believe ( around that figure) So basically the Superdual is meeting the same fate . Apparently SWM are working on a twin engine but they have kept this very quiet. They are still producing the RS300 - that you talked about few years ago and the 500 , basically they haven’t changed much since 2016 colour changes , side stand change , LED lights , more comfortable seat and not sure 🤔 what else. I could find out from owners on the SWM page .

Great info, thanks! It's always sad to see the big singles biting the dust in more and more countries. 😢 I had read on a forum that most of the engine was made in Italy but a fair bit of the top end was Chinese... but I've seen no verification for that. I used to have a Husky TE610, I was hoping SWM could have revived that design and had a lighter more powerful option for those of us who like the DR650.

@@crosstrainingadventure Yes 👍 I seen your vids when you had the Husky TE610 ( as a light weight ADV / dual sport - and about the rear subframe. To SWM credit they did fix a lot of issues the TE had , but Covid had a MASSIVE affects on their staff and production, they were just starting to ramp up and got into the US market ( other manufacturers like BMW made it very difficult for them - as Roxtex was going to build the Older GS 800 - or the Husky Nuda engine in a adv bike design that SWM were working on ( BMW basically said if you do we will not get your engines ) and we’ll BMW is a WAY bigger market, another twin engine they were going to use same thing happened. KTM it just buys its competition out . This is one of the reasons SWM are staying quiet 🤫 on its latest design. Unfortunately the BIG boys don’t want the little boys to take sales away from them . The RS 650 was a very good competitor to the DR650 . Better in most ways I think 🤔 ( just abit heavier by about 10kg ( off late a lot of Superdual owners have converted their bikes into a RS ( put the TE630 Safari tank on - goes straight on ) take all the crash bar , rear pegs , Center stand , put a single sided pipe on with a Aussie Barrett pipe and you drop around 20kg . It’s what I did with mine . And you get the stronger rear subframe..I hope SWM doesn’t go under because off bigger manufacturers making it difficult for them , they are a older design and is why a cheaper option “ some say they should upgrade “ but look at the DR or DRZ basically haven’t changed for 20 odd years ( and the KLR - basically all they did was bolt on fuel injection and ABS to pass new laws . Anyway keep up the GREAT 👍 Vids . Aussie content is a lot better in my opinion ( we are more practical) the Poms seem to like all the bling on their bikes , the yanks - the latest thing but us Aussies are practical if it works keep it , if it doesn’t piss it off 😂😂😂.

I was pretty close to buying a Superdual last year and I already had plans to try and drop about 20kg and bring it down closer to a DR650. My dream? Honda brings back the XR650R, slaps on an e-start, and does just enough mods to get it plated. And keep it all sub-150kg. 😍

You're doing it wrong. You don't ride a BMW how you want to ride it, you ride it how the German engineers tell you. LOL! I bought my first BMW over 20 years ago...an 1150RT which I promptly binned after 6 months by tossing it down the Cherohala Skyway. Then I got an 1150GS. Both of those bikes had "features" (not problems...German bikes don't have problems). The RT had a horrible lean surge at 3500rpm. I was told "don't ride at that RPM". The GS had an issue with predetonation. I was told I wasn't riding the bike hard enough and carbon was building up. So I left the brand and went to Japanese bikes with a stops along the way on a Ducati, Aprillia, and a couple of Buells. Finally ended up with a V-Strom 1000. It was flawless. Imagine the motorcycling equivalent of a kitchen appliance. Never had an issue. Could barely tell the thing was running. I owned it 8 years and nearly stopped riding. The bike simply had no soul. No character. It was like dating a Puritan woman....boring. I sold the V-Strom and bought a well used and neglected 2013 BMW R1200 R. I took much of it apart, and went through it. Performed all the maintenance. Replaced parts that were known to have issues. Updated some things. Cleaned it up and made it look like new. I love the bike like a member of the family. I look forward to riding it. I got a great deal on my BMW jacket...only $600. :)

Interesting that you've not ridden any of the big adv bikes. Neither have I and probably for similar reasons. Yes, a Unimog can go over really bad terrain but an ATV can do the same terrain easily and is more fun. It is great to watch skilled GS riders manhandle their monsters through some gnarly trails but I have no desire to ride a heavy, expensive machine there... for fun? Yes, a great feeling of achievement I'm sure. Maybe some of us don't need that feeling? But all bikes have issues and the more complex the bike is, the more potential for issues. I like simple bikes. Maybe that means I am simple minded? That's okay with me!

Except he is right. BMW in general has had lots of issues and everything with a BMW label on it is bloody expensive. This is not derision from merely dirt bike riders. Many BMW owners recognise it just as much. I’ll be the first to admit they are very capable touring bikes, have lots of power and are comfortable but they have no soul. Horses for courses, but Barry’s criticisms are solid. On other videos he acknowledges some BMW owners have claimed they had no issues with their bikes but others have had nothing but grief after grief. He’s also doing people a great service by making these issues known, forewarned is fore-armed. This info should factor into a purchasing decision.
