Let's take a look at the BMW i3s, the refreshed version of BMW's popular premium, compact, city car. With more power and a number of updates, is this the future, is the future now, when will the electric world be fully upon us?
Kicking off with a walkaround of the exterior and interior to look at the updates to the BMW i3s over the regular i3, then it's time to explore some tight and twisty roads to experience the drive on a road test. Finally let's go in more detail around the dashboard and displays inside the small electric car.
Thanks for watching, Tim

The I3 is underrated. Been driving them a lot during my visit to the capital city in my country. They are very fun to drive and the acceleration is amazing!

I Agree...it's underrated. People forget that it's been in production since 2013. That's a long time for a pure EV and IMO it's still very cool. BMW must have learned a truckload about EVs from this platform.

My wife and I love our i3. A great daily car to throw around. Two things you didn’t mentioned. First there is no center console. It makes it so much easier to get on the driver seat without getting out of the car. Second, you can actually move and fold the seat forward with the ledge at the back of the head rest so you can get in to the back seat much easier.

The reason why electric cars are so popular here in norway (and the i3) is because you doesn't have to pay VAT and one-time fee when buying the car, toll-roads, free parking in the city, you can use bus-line and so on!

If the city is built for them it is a great idea. Unfortunately in Australia in most places they would just get run over by a B-Double truck . that is if you could even find a power supply to recharge. Our government is next to useless when it comes to adopting technology. We still have some non air conditioned electric trains and the temperatures have reached 42 degrees c lately outside. Let alone inside a tin can.

Drive i3s, leafs, teslas, hybrids and diesels - both EVs and ICE have their uses. Most folk can't afford a new car be that ICE or EV. However, the i3 is a very good car but so is a 17 year old aluminium Audi A2.

Most people miss the point of this vehicle. Compact dimensions, great visibility and rapid acceleration and zero fuel being burned whilst stuck in traffic add up to an awesome fun daily driver from suburbs into any CBD . Nothing to stop you putting a petrol engine car of your choice in a garage for weekends. I test drove one of these and a Volt. The second hand BMW was 45,000NZD the Volt just 30,000NZD. Passengers preferred the ride in the Volt and it was cheaper the Volt won . Sceptics need to drive an EV, they are just the mutts nuts for stress free commuting.

Hi, Tim, I've been thinking of the new I3s and the first thing that stands out is how silently it goes and the stately acceleration that the car is capable to provide you in any situation!!! My strong bias on this car is very strong and I can assure you that this model will be chosen by many people who want enjoy the driving and at the same time saving the environment. The one thing that I'd like to get off my chest is that if you hadn't been so busy travelling around the world, would you have thought to buy one of these?

I think this issue is rather overstated. At least in the US, where diesels are uncommon save for some trucks, engines are so quiet that you can barely hear them, and certainly can't hear them above tire noise of an approaching car. Hearing a Tesla drive by is identical to hearing just about anything else drive by.
@jabbawaffle6346

Mitchell Steindler . Agree it is still an area of debate and now electric or "quieter" cars are on the rise on our roads I have yet to hear any statistics saying that these cars are any greater danger to the public that traditional loud cars. That being said, perhaps the data has not been accumulated over a long enough period

You mixed up kWh and kW @3:07 Kilowatt hour (kWh) is a unit of energy, in this case battery capacity, while Kilowatt (kW) is a unit of power (we usually say horse power) as we know it from car engines or now electric motors, but it's for example also used to rate the power of chargers. Very common to mix those up, but it's good to be aware of it, because it can get confusing when talking about EVs and one talks about battery capacity or range and the other one about engine performance and the other one about charging speed. i3s 94 Ah/33 kWh 135 kW/184 hp

I am admittedly a Tesla fangirl but I am seriously considering this as well. It's adorable! My husband hates the doors because every time a passenger is in the back wants to get out, you HAVE to open your door to let them out. I can get that I guess. I have read that it is hard to find the skinnier wheels and that they are expensive as well. Still on my list though :)

I believe the public will eventually get used to the lack of noise from e-Cars, and at least there will be less congestion sounds on the city streets (and people on their DAMN PHONES will pay more attention!)but suspect classic muscle cars will either have to go through a conversion process or pay through the noise for petrol. 17:14, the area with the support strap, I'm curious why BMW wouldn't make this for extra storage, it just looks like a unless gap with an i3 plaque.

There are no A sides in the interior of an i3 - it is all B sides (surfaces) due to the environmental considerations and solutions initially developed for the i3. The summary of the study used to develop the interior materials and solutions cover more than 80 pages and has been used in at least University in Germany. Somehow even the latest Lagonda concept is trying out natural materials to replace leather while keeping a luxury feel. On the good side it seams that most new EV´s do in fact drive well, enough that it gets mentioned by the Journalists driving them, of which most are pretty spoiled. ;)
