Bmw M235i N55 alternator removal

Seems like the alternator bearings were starting to make a whining noise almost sounding like a supercharger whine. Was able to remove it without having to take the intake manifold and oil filter/thermostat housing apart. Removing the AC compressor and belt pulley bracket makes this job a lot less messy.
I took the alternator to a repair shop and got them to just swap bearings, the clutch pulley and alternator internals were perfectly fine and charging no sense of spending $900 on a new one just cause the bearings went.

The bottom ac compressor bolt which is very lovely thing on 4 series from my excellent. It is right in front of you when you lift the car in the air

Alternator went out on me while I was driving. Took me a week to figure out it was the alternator. Found one on eBay for $70 with 20k mikes on it putting it in asap thanks for this video!

Great video! The only way to do this job-the only thing I would add would be to use a ratchet wrench with a flexible head for the bolt under the compressor - that is a tough to get out without it! Thanks a bunch!!

Thank you for your kind explanation. I have a question. Do I have to lift the car with a jockey and loosen it underneath the car for one of the three AC compuresa bolts?

This video is the best way. BMW wanted about $1300 labor I said no thanks, towed it home and got the job done in my 335 f30 n55 for about $400 for the alternator

Sorry for the late reply, no, I didn’t have to jack it up or have to take the charge pipe off. Just the belt, AC compressor and bracket in order to be able to wiggle out the alternator

hey man quick question. I have m235i with manual transmission. I found some alternator but I don't know if it has to do with the transmission type or not. even thou it states for automatic transmission.

Isn't the alternator belt driven? I don't see the part where you take the belt off? Thanks a bunch

Yes it is and I already removed the belt and loosened all the boards prior to starting the video. The belt is very easy to take off by using a socket and breaker bar on the idler pulley

@@dentfx293 thanks I’m going to tackle this today at home. I got the torch T60 for the belt. My only concern right now is the condenser. How many volts hold that in place? Is it 4? The 4th being the one under that you can't see. Can you undo it from above the engine bay?

@@filipepereira8427 if I remember correctly it’s only 3 bolts holding the AC compressor and yes you can access all of them from the top of the engine bay, as well as more bolts holding the compressor bracket which can be accessed fairly easy once the compressor is removed and pulled to the side. Also to keep in mind that you don’t have to replace the alternator with a new one as 90% of the times it’s usually the bearings or the clutch pulley that fail. Bringing it to a alternator repair shop you can get it fixed for under $100 and when you get it back it literally looks and works like brand new, no sense of spending $500-$900 on a new one

@@dentfx293 thank you very much. I was able to remove the alternator with your directions. Great help. Thank you. Turns out the voltage regulator was faulty...I had it replaced and tested with all ok. Next step is to reassemble it all.

Just back off the ac compressor and loosen the bolts on the bracket. Don't need to purge anything. People make big deal out of this job and start cutting intakes and other nonsense
