That's probably the highest revving diesel engine I've seen. Not a fan of BMW, but 5.5k redline for a diesel is an amazing achievement. Not to mention I still haven't figured out how they mount 3 turbos in the engine...

After spending the weekend in a Modern Line 2012 328i, I have to say that the new Inline-4 Turbo is utterly brilliant for the size and weight of the new 3 Series. The balance of power to chassis stiffness is about perfect, perhaps it could use a bit more stiffening in the front as it does have a bit of wallow when you're on the limit, but the engine itself is up to just about any task. I averaged almost 25 MPG over three days of general dickery while being able to hit 60 MPH in 5.8 or less.

@rvind92g I think they employed a parallel/series style, using 2 small turbos at low revs and the largest turbo operating at peak power. The small turbos operate in parallel while the larger turbine in series with the smaller turbos.

in full auto mode when you give the car the boot, does is shift at a lower RPM than what you are shifting it at? I know diesels like to make a lot more of their torque down lower, and i have a feeling this may be stretching it out past where all the power is made.

BMW E92 325d (2010) is the most perfect six cylinder diesel-engine of the world and it's not so expensive.. the 325d-Engine has won in the category for six cylinder diesel engines in a german motor-magazine and my dad drives the E92 325d to .. 204 PS.. it's beautiful to drive and so smooth and sounds very nice.. I hope you can get your Diesel-BMW as quickly as possible :-)

That engine revs incredibly high for a Diesel, probably the most revvy diesel i've seen. Kudos to BMW M for making a Diesel sports car not too far off

Completely true! My rough count was around 40 secs here vs the 30-ish in the autoforumCZ video. Even without counting it's noticeably faster. And I don't think that the half full tank in this one vs the 1/4 full in the other makes up for that much of a difference.

Would have been nice to see how much revs it has in 8th gear at top speed. I am looking forward to read the full test. Thanks for the video.

@mehrzweckreiniger you only can be sure about that, when both cars are on the same street section with exact the same wind regime. I don't know if your car went down or the 550d went upwards with headwind. Why should a 333 bhp gasoline car be faster than a diesel with 381 bhp and 740 Nm of torque?

You have a point, sir. I suppose you do have the best of both worlds with a car like this, it is great stuff, but I'm afraid I'm biased or old fashioned but I just love petrol engines, especially turbo ones!

I will buy this car some day... After few years when the price of the used ones has dropped in more reasonable level. It's powerful, practical and economical at the same time and it has four wheel drive with a lot of grunt. Just a perfect combination of a practical every-day car and sports car.

I'm gonna turn 25 this April, all my tryin leads me nowhere so far. I think taking a master's degree will help a bit(gonna need to borrow some from a friend), just wish me luck. Thank you, bro

give or take, around 4k from the E350 Bluetec 3.0 V6 OM642. It actually revs higher than the Golf 2.0 TDI EA827 which feels like it hit the rev limit sooner. We really don't see too much diesels in North America...

Modern diesel like this one have nothing to do with older ones, they are wayyyy smoother than that old jetta you heard the other day.

Though this car is brisk, it isn't anything to write home about. In fact, i'm sure even a panamera D is in the ball park in real world situation 0-60 maybe even to 80mph 90mph, however this tri-turbo 550d monsters towards 100mph and hammers the 155 limiter, which tells me the midrange will be similarly brutal. This car comes with a warranty - AMAZING!

A great technical achieving, that's for sure. Even so, I cannot dare to imagine the maintenance bills when the car gets to be older than five years... Aren't we stretching the engines just a little too much? Is reliability and hight maintenance costs the price to pay for short-term fuel economy and performance? Just a thought...

@Loco4everHolmes Yes, to get boost and torque in the whole rpm range. Think of a garden hose, if the tap its connected to is the throttle and the nozzle is the turbo: If the tap is opened just a little bit you must restrict the nozzle to make a squirt, if you dont the water just pours out. Then if you open the tap more, you still get the squirt but no more flow. So you open the nozzle abit more. Get the figure? One big turbo could get more hp, but would have an awful lag. Anyway, 381 hp is..WOW!

@oXe2 Eben das ist ja gerade in den höheren Drehzahlen nicht so groß, weshalb ich mich gewundert habe, warum nicht bei 4400 geschaltet wird... Aber die Leistung errechnet sich ja durch 2pi x M, und da die Drehzahl höher ist, liegt über den Beschleunigung eine höhere durchschnittliche Leistung an, als wenn früher geschaltet werden würde...

@everydaypanos Diesel engines only sound bad when idling because they rev at very low rpm. While driving they sound good.

@mr13377 And I forgot, 535D in our car is able to run 6,1l/100km - same 3,0 R6 engine but twinturbo ;) And value 6,3 is given by BMW not by me.

@JELH from the outside it still sounds like 1.9TDI from early 90's. A bit better inside, but that's mostly thanks to exhaust set up, not the engine itself. Still very agricultural.

I've got a diesel now with similar (slightly more) bhp to my previous petrol but way more torque and I agree about the lack of top end, whereas the petrol would keep going easily upto 130mph, the diesel really struggles above 120

Correct, on full acceleration in modern cars the highest gear won't be used. These gears are just for fuel economy.

It`s a triple-turbo diesel, the engine si actually 3,0 and i saw a video on youtube in which the average fuel consumption was 7,0L/100km

1 turbo for 2 cylinders probably. Anyway, what's the highest you've seen for a diesel revving apart from this.

The low end torque is very nice indeed for daily driving. But for fun and excitement diesel cant beat petrol

This Car is incredible...... So much Power in all RPMs..... Tri Turbo Diesel Engine with only 3 Liters..... My Old BMW X3 had the Biturbo Engine with 286HP, it was very Fast but THIS new Engine has 100PS More.. What the Hell......
