I had a P0021 in my 01' 740i after doing a full timing guide replacement. I used the cheaper kit. As you probably already know, Bank 2 is driver side (in a LHD car). I removed and replaced the valve cover about 15 times, making small adjustments each time to the cam timing wheel/cog. Finally got this thing to work. I removed the torx in the front of the timing cover and a little at a time rotated the timing wheel, reassembled, cleared codes, started it, restarted it. If you have a P0021, you don't have to re-time it entirely (unless maybe you're off by a tooth, though not sure how you can really do that). I put a long punch through the timing hole (torx bolt hole in upper timing cover) and my correct timing was just on the right margin of the hole in the timing wheel. So, in other words, the punch was just right of center of the hole in the timing wheel.

Hi Nathan great video! Couldn't be doing my engine rebuild without your videos, so thank you for posting! I have a quick question, is the N62 engine timing similar to this? I couldn't find a video for it, but I'm not sure how similar it would be? Many thanks for your help!

Hey great video really help prep me for my 540i, just wondering about the zip ties you put around the timing chain guide to hold it tight to the chain, after you put the cover back on and installed the chain tensioner, is there enough room around the camshaft sprocket to reach down and cut the zip tie off? Or how do you remove the tie after installing the cover and tensioner?

Content counts.. Thank you for this Channel. Your reviews are just that reviews.. You're here for the DIY people not the DIFM people.. I have a 2003 e53 4.4.. I have a a more informative/price question.. If you ever have time for. I'm about to change my guides for maintenance reasons. Water pump bolt broke and had to remove cover; since I was there.... I ordered the gas tool as recommended.. Cost versus worth. Would it be fair to say For about $1,500 in parts I can add another 100k-150k miles. I don't see my self selling. I have a list of parts in my cart. From the rear coolant heater hoses, to the oil pan chain and lower pan gaskets? Am I over thinking this, $1,500 for another 5-10 years is about $150 a year; sounds excellent to me Thank you for any info.. Have a great weekend

This is great. About the zip tie... when does it come off? You have to put the UTC at some point without that zip tie on there. Or is the issue you want to be sure than when the tensioner tool comes off we make sure to not drop the guide and slip the chain?

Great video. I have been working on getting my 2003 X5 retimed, but every time I go to test whether it will hold time or even take the cam locking tool off of the passenger side of the engine, the intake cam rotates forward an 1/8 of a turn. Would something like that mean the cam is bad, the VANOS/Cam adjuster has issues, or is it something else? Thanks in advance.

Hi Nathan,i did everything correct with the timing tools, but my mistake was i didnt hold the tensioner when removing the chain tensioner tool,i rotated the engine manually with the chain loose and after starting the car,it sounds like a tractor,is there any damage to the valves being hit by the pistons or should i time it again holding it with zip ties before i put the covers back(what effect does it have when the chain goes loose when removing the chain tensioner tool without using the cable ties?what would the extent of the damage be?

My cam shafts are lined up but the pin for the crank doesnt line up with the hole. I would have to crank by hand a couple times to be able to slide the pin in the hole. Although I see my camshafts are lined up at a different position when i crank by hand at a different spot. I was thinking i could time the vanos with the jig tools from gas an itll run?

first of all thank you for your awesome videos in your channel and I´m sorry for my bad english. I´m from Germany but i dont get proper information about the timing in the internet :( Thats quite sad for a German car :D! I still dont get how the timing is set correctly when I also have to rebuild the vanos units. I´ve to do this on my 98 e39 540i (TU) because of broken guides. And I also want to rebuild the vanos units because i also had the "diesel-sound" from them. So I have to take off the Vanos/Intake sprocket to rebuild it. So do I just have to put i on again (after rebuild) and do the timing by turning the Vanos with the special tool for it all to the left? I mean there have to be another timing option? Because I rode sth about tools for 0° or 3° timing? Or do i have this just to do when i take the cams off because the sprocket behind the vanos is the "main timing sprocket" and the front one is just that that the vanos is working fine? I´m a little bit confused because I know from my dad that the timing on an aircooled Porsche is completly diffrent and way more complicated (have to measure the valve stroke and stuff...). And I really dont want to mess up my engine!

i did mine without timing locks but Offcourse timing is off however i did reuse the old chain ..before anyone insults me i had no choice i got stuck in a small town up north and had 0 access to bmw parts thats the reason so i had to piece it together and timef it by the book the car ran beautiful for an hour same power everything..then the light came on and i lost 50 percent power under 2500 rpm what boghlez me is. im thinking the chain is streched i did not move the cams i timex them perfectly been driving this way almost a year now with both banks overadvanced..i am going to rip it apart soon to replace the chain..but im wonfering if i should tow it to a buddy to time it before we close it up or should i just put in the new chain..and time it again...oh yea i madde i own cam locks with a block of would and held the cams in front witj a rachet amazibgly tje car runs good even in minus 15 condutions and long drives offcourse the lack if power pissies me off but it runs i even reused the crank bolt i have a new one but im not putting it in till i do it again

Any experience with the primary chain tensioner updated part spoken about in some bimmer forums? Going all OEM/BMW parts for this service. Any other suggestions on what other maintainance/services that should/might be done when the front of the engine is off? Hey Nathan Thanks for this. My brother and I are putting back a 2003 Range Rover. He is a mechanic, but specializes on rotary motors. Heads were done at the machine shop, and we are ready to put them back on. Our question is, do we have to align the cams in a specific manner? The machine shop sent us the heads without the large sprocket installed, hence our question. I see that the numbers just need to be visible on top, is that all? Any input is much appreciated. Thanks, Danny Maldonado

Hey Nathan, i'm currently in the middle of doing a timing chain guide job on 540i and there were a few things that i have ran into regarding the timing that i was hoping you could answer. First of all, i had to use the x5 L shaped flywheel pin because for some reason i cant get the straight one in due to an obstruction caused by a sway bar or something, is this alright? Second, when locking the cams down there are no numbers facing up at the rear of the cams when the car is locked in tdc, not sure if theres just no numbers on these cams for some reason or if something is screwed up.

Hi Nathan, what do you think about this procedure on changing the guides alone? kzfaq.info/get/bejne/qsySn8eIv5jclYU.html I'm planning on doing the guides alone, and would like to know, if it's possible without the timing tools, as I won't be removing any chains. Do I risk throwing error codes P0011 and P0021, doing it this way?
