Hey Alex. I have had 6 BMWs, up to 2003 e39, most v8s, no M cars. Then I switched to Mercedes. I hear what this guy is saying...they do "feel" different, more connected to the road. Overall, the Mercedes have been WAY more reliable, currently (2) w211, (1) w210 and (2) w203 in the family.

This was great, I'm a M113K disciple but love hearing the inside story on other cars/makes/models. Mad respect to BMW, I love driving my brothers 330 ZHP, very different driving experience. Handles so well and the I6 sounds great when you get it high in the revs.......but then I get back into my CLS55 and the torque takes me away to happy land along with the unholy exhaust note. This should be a monthly episode. Nice job fellas!

Thanks for another awesome video Alex (and OJ)! I, and apparently all of your viewers, really appreciate this kind of video. It's really great to hear two well-steeped mechanics from both fields trade insight into two platforms with so much history. My whole reason for loving the Mercedes AMG platform is because I know I'm never going to a track and I'm not fond of tickets. I can get on it when the coast is clear and dodge the occasional pot hole or tree branch in the road. I use my car every day and realize that I really don't need super car handling to get to work and back. I'm on my second E-Beast (an 2007 and a 2010) and I have nothing but respect and love for them. I ran the vins pre-purchase and made sure they were both the revised versions of the two platforms. Aside from the worthless panoramic sunroofs I've never done anything but change the fluids. I bought both of them with around 40,000 miles and put around 60,000 miles on them. The sunroofs have plastic clips that get brittle from heat cycling. They fail and release the wound spring tension causing the sun shade to slam open permanently. Those clips and are $3 and cost $900 per panel ($1800 if you do them one at a time) to replace. I've replaced them on both cars. I'm starting to get the itch for a newer car and I'm strongly considering the 2012 for it's newer twin turbo platform. From what I can discern, it's only a tune and some exhaust cutouts away from from being a monster. It's the first (guinea pig) year of the setup. What do you know or what have you heard about the twin-turbo setup? I'm sorry if you've addressed this before. I follow your channel very closely but I can't ever seem to find the time to get through all of the comments to see if that's been a topic of discussion.

Never been in an E55 but I've had the opportunity to ride in a few E60 M5's and an E63 M6. What your friend said about the feeling of the car is 100% true. When the car gets going it something I find hard to put into words. The screaming V10 motor, the torque (people call this car a torqueless wonder but I still VIOLENTLY slammed me back in my seat), the styling has aged incredibly well (early mercedes did not but that's my own opinion), the active bolsters that hug you when you go into the M mode, the fact that it has 2 horsepower modes (400hp vs 507hp), and so many more things. It's easy to say it isn't worth it when you've never had the opportunity to ride or drive in one, but you should really try it. I haven't gotten my E60 yet but that is the main goal I am currently working towards as a student. I'm ashamed to say i've probably spent more time looking at for sale listings and m5board.com then my studies lol, but the more I learn about the car (whether it be maintenance or otherwise), I love the car more. It's the car that got me into ///M's and can't wait to get it. E55 AMG is an interesting car that i've never paid attention to but I will definitely give it another look now.

Bring back OJ and have another talk about the mid-range offerings from BMW and Mercedes. These would be turbo 6s and V8s from both that sit right below the M and AMG tiers, and offer seemingly great bang for buck when it comes to mods and tunes. As a bmw guy. For 20k now the best choice is an n54. The engine can handle 600whp with no issue with big boy mods. The auto trans on them can also handle dumb horsepower depending how often you launch them. The n54 is NOT an M car it's in the 335 from 07-10 and in the 335is from 11-13(in some 535 cars too) everything 2010 and after is pretty reliable.
@StarkPVP
@StarkPVP 5 жыл бұрын
my 08 535 transmission was decimated at 85k. You're right about the engines though those n54s are beasts and can handle mostly anything you want to do with it. Only issues with the engine I had in over 30k miles of driving half that with tune was the fuel injectors which are covered under warranty from bmw until 75k (twice lol), then had to replace tubing for turbo bc it melted which was around $15. Finally the last problem which I thought was the end of her she was leaking a quart of oil every couple days turns out it was only the gasket for the oil filter another very cheap fix. Now of course had a couple non engine related problems that costed a decent sum but if you know what you're looking for and get a well maintained nice one, then they really aren't endless money pits like people say.

New sub here. Have t had my M3 that long, and live in cold climate Canada so winter driving is a no. I’m very nervous about the vanos and rod bearing aspects so far no issue. As for the driving experience. FYI I’ve had many cars, the E92 M3 all I can say is exquisite on wheels. The balance, the endless redline, it’s smiles every every time! Option a tune Ess offers supercharger packages

Traded my 2006 M5 for a 2014 E63 wagon 18 months ago. Miss it every day!. I put 50k miles on it with just a oil cooler and alternator. Got rid of it at 99k for fear of rod bearing failure, vanish problems and oil pump replacement. The E63 is a rocket and gave me peace of mind but it handles like crap in comparison. The all wheel drive makes it rather boring too. The BMW was like driving a scalpel reminiscent of my 2001 clown shoe MZ3.

I re\lly enjoy the driving feel of BMW. I find them more sporty in daily driving, and I'm not even talking M cars. I've owned Mercedes, and I've enjoyed them, but I found them sluggish in comparison. To be fair, the Mercedes weren't AMG either. The only time I drove an AMG was when I was car-shopping last fall, and tried a new C63. You might consider a non-M BMW? A 335i is a pretty good base to start from

Mercedes feels disconnected from the road. The Beemer rides like its on rails, the V10 sound gives you butterflies. People who never have driven an M5 are always speculating about how can it be so good. Drive one and quit speculating.This guy wants to modify his car and have a reliable machine?

I concur...you have to drive one to really appreciate what it is. I’ve owned several M cars, mostly M3’s. The E60 M5 is the first one Ive owned that actually scares me, but it’s the cost of ownership! The SMG isn’t as bad as they say it is either. Once you get used to it, it really suits the car.

AMG is a mean road car with incredible brakes, just not a track car out of the box like an M. An M suspension package will lose just about any car in the twisties. The M4 is the champion when it comes to handling. I have never driven a car other than an M where the car is asking for more throttle in the corners. It's hard to lose your tail in an M unlike a Corvette, Ferrari, Lamborghini, Mustang. This is where other cars get in trouble.

Never had an M Car, but have had three BMWs over the years. Two 135is (08 and 12), and an E39 540i. The 540i was my favorite car that I have ever owned, and I currently own an 07 Cayman S and an 06 E55 Kombi. The 540i just had a brilliant combination of power, chassis grace, and long distance comfort. It was equally at home on a long distance highway cruise, or barnstorming a back road. It just felt perfectly proportioned , and it even got pretty decent gas mileage considering it's size and power levels. I ran it to 171,000 miles and unfortunately ran into tin worm living in the north east, but if you can find a well maintained example, they are brilliant cars. I would highly recommend the E39 M5 The 135is were fun with a couple suspension tweeks, but in both cases they had major maintenance problems. The 2012 in particular had a litany of issues related to the direct injection system, and I always disliked the Valvtronic system's affect on power delivery. I do really like my Cayman S, but it's more of a toy than a real car. The E55 is new to me, and I do really like it overall, but the servo braking system is a real annoyance. The brake pedal buzzes under my foot annoyingly every 2 minutes or so. It also started making a really loud power steering whine about 2 days after I bought it, so that hasn't endeared it to me so much, but it might change once I chase the problem down and fix it.

I owned a 2008 m5 6mt a couple of years ago , I did do rod bearings on the car at around 200,000km (Canada) I paid about $2,400 at an independent.. I switched to 0w50 after the bearing install ...the car was driven very hard and I actually had no huge issues with it .. I put headers on it and a custom exhaust from a local exhaust shop , a local tuner Dyno tuned it for me it ended up making 580whp on a mustang Dyno and 94 octane. I sold it at 300,000km still running great actually . I know I was lucky but I wouldn't hesitate to buy another. I just sold it to afford a house upgrade and now I have an e92 335i single turbo conversion which I absolutely love

I had (9) E36 M3s. They were durable and fixable for a 40yo guy. By the time I wanted an E46 M3, the problems were past my physical capability to fix by a regular guy with a nice garage and nice tools and plenty of time. I wanted an E46 M3 but they are just too much work. If you look past the E46 M3, I would have to spend $50k for something new enough with a warranty to fix all the oil leaks. I’ll probably switch to an electric car for more torque and no maintenance in the future.

One sample does not tell you the story ... I had an E46 and E92 both hit 80k without any major issues / repairs (most expensive was new brake rotors (rear) which was a wear-tear item). It really depends on the year and how the previous driver drove it ... I always serviced my BMW's at BMW, and followed service interval and recommended oil (and never sitting and rev it cold to 'show off'). My rod bearings are pristine ...

Hey i noticed you were talking positively about the m113 but hows the reliability of the m112 ? and how much do you know about those cars as far as diagnostics go ? I have a chrysler crossfire with a n/a m112 6 speed manual and i'm experiencing some issues with my abs / esp system, continuously malfunctioning, the car drives perfectly fine but speedometer won't work and i've replaced the abd module already with no success. Some one told me it could be the rcm but swapped that and then i was told it could be the yaw sensor. just trynna get some guidance as to what to do to fix this issue. I know your time and knowledge is a valued asset and i won't mind compensating you for it. I'll be doing the work on the car myself because local mechanics keep trying to finesse me into paying thousands of dollars to fix this issue and ik its not that expensive of a job (at least for me to tackle myself).

First of all, amazing video, loved the conversation from two guys who have such a vast knowledge of both AMG and M cars. Ok, I’ve driven both an E55 AMG, and own a E63 M6 (6speed Manual), you ask a few times “what am I gaining” and at the end of the day an E55 is reliable like a SBC as you say and it also drives, feels and sounds like a small block V8, there is no other feeling than spinning a V10 at 8,000 rpm, it’s not about reliability, you say you want it all, but I’m sorry your Mercedes will never feel like that S85. Great video and you guys touch on everything and I really enjoyed hearing you guys talking on these cars, although these are direct competition vehicles it really is apples to oranges in my opinion. But yes, I’m a BMW guy, and I’ve followed your channel for a long time, you do great content, keep it up.
