B58 video explaining how a small mistake on my end sent me down a rabbit hole. Oil consumption, blowing oil or smoking are all related to the pcv system but now we are experiencing the whole system have issues. Check out this video as I explain what happened to me and how you can prevent it.

Thank you for chronicling high mileage, tuned B58 ownership. I’m only at 58k but I love this car and plan to ride it for a very long time, and your cars show it’s totally possible…

Thanks for the head up on this. Would be super helpful to know exactly what valve cover you bought that caused the issue.

I want to say it was parts Greek or something. I refused to pay $750 the dealer wanted for a plastic cover. Big mistake. Like I said buying a used one from eBay that’s oem is a great solution if yours goes.

Thanks for your information, maybe in the future you can plug the head ports so not any air can go into your valve cover. (with boost)

Yeah I should have done that. Did that on my n54. Those are easier to diagnose cause of an external pcv

My gen 1 B58 is at 113k miles on a hybrid turbo setup. That oil filter housing gasket and head gasket definitely gonna be on the list with all the fluids too. I had the same smoking issues too but my stock turbo blew, after replacing with my current setup was still blowing smoke ended up going the same route as you chasing down the white smoke issue. Turns out it was just all the old oil sitting in the cats being burned off, but did a PCV replacement of the entire system, compression test it was a nightmare trying to chase it down. She’s all good now haven’t had an issue other than that been super bullet proof. Oh and had a hard time finding a crankshaft position sensor when doing the compression test I think I ended up frying that sensor

Lol that’s crazy my b58 has 254k and is doing the exact same thing 😮 welp let me go and cancel this Ross racing order and go order a oem bmw VC instead of fcp febi VC 😂

Everyone should know that the valve cover is a warranty thing for BMW on these B58. they will replace a failed valve cover up to 100,000 miles, so yeah your car definitely did not qualify for that. I had a valve cover fail at 54,000 miles and my brother had one fail at 74,000. There are two points that fail one is the diaphragm that’s easy and there is an internal part that also fails. just replace it with the ross racing before there’s an issue..

I’m having the same issue with my Supra with rough idle and the smoke coming out I just replaced my valve cover with a oem one from Toyota so I don’t know what to do

Do a compression test, if that is good probably turbo.

i'm guessing you left the plastic oil filter housing on.. uhhh.. if you're pushing oil from charge pipe is the PCV system/ turbo oil seals. pistons and rings wil push oil into the exhaust, not intake, unless you over pressure crankcase then it's both intake and exhaust.. with aftermarket turbo, you MAY be be creating too high of vacuum. on intake side and sucking oil out. other option for pushing oil, but passing a manufacturer test is, oil pressure, if it is missing a restrictor and needs one, it can push oil past the seal, but then they test it with the proper restriction it passes, had a buddy with this issue, they sent him the wrong restrictor, he asked the turbo maker to give him one that was proper finally after a bunch of back and forth, and no issues after. the BEST PCV system is one that uses the exhaust in venturi, but you fail smog..
