BMW Compact losing power up to 2.5k revs?
Checked your plugs, your coils, and your MAF sensor already??
Chances are that your CCV (Crank Case Ventilation) valve is either staying full open or full closed!
Time for a ccv change out possibly. They are rated to 100,000km or 62,000 before being due for a change out.
The symptoms are that the car, when started in the cold winter days, is very rough in idle on start-up and in fact can take two or more attempts to start, after the first attempts stalling.
Even when started - for a period of maybe 5 minutes whilst the engine is getting to optimal temperature... the car can be extremely rough in low revs up to 2.5k.
Pulling out of junctions is a bitch at low revs - slipping the clutch is the only answer - but causes premature wear on your clutch.
On warmer days the start-up issue does not exist for some reason but still power fails beneath 2.5krpm
because of the problem... fuel economy whilst in the lower gears and accelerating really does hit the pocket harder than it should - more fuel is being wasted because effectively the engine is misfiring and rinsing the engine.
BMW are aware of the issues that are caused by temperature, and the CCV valve. So much so that for colder climates (canada etc) that they created an insulated version of the unit for each of the e46 engines.

The problem most probably is the chain tensioner which needs to be replaced to a modified one, and then you need to realign the camshafts, because the loos non modified tensioner will cause the cogs to slip and then you will have codes related to the inlet and exhaust camshaft sensors, saying something about value being out of limit

Just read your posts on the bimmer forum and jamesjohn318 is spot on. Those are all the things I'm checking and changing and crossing off the list.

If you got the 4 cilinder n46 engine in a e90. You do not have to take the inlet manifold out. Just remove the pollenfilter and air inlet and your fine!

Hey Johnny, I went the same way with the USB cable diagnostics and even setting up BMW DIS GT1. There are a few tests and settings to play with so still trying to learn how to use it. My theory for the hesitation is that the intermediate levers in the variable valve timing system are worn, which affects the timing especially at idle and low revs. So software may be able to adjust for the wear but really those bits would need to be replaced.

Some you can do with out taking the manifold without taking inlet. To do this type you could try taking the alternator out and perhaps the oil pump housing and the struggle! By the time you have done that I could of had the manifold off and back on. So your choice I know what I do!

Does anyone have updated links for the service manual? The links in the video are no longer working.

Hi Big, That all sounds very similar to what I have experienced with my engine. Well.... changing the CCV I was convinced had sorted the problem..... but very shortly thereafter the problem returned. The next thing to check out is the vvt and it's associated leverage system. I have now replaced the cam sensors and no change there either. Any luck on your part sudnut?? Jonny

Yep - definitely a pain in the butt to do - but only because of the two bolts that hold the inlet manifold on, on the right hand side of the engine bay. Next job for me is to change out the chain tensioner. Will let you know how that goes.

just back in there from checking the DIS again - now its saying DME-2781 DME camshaft sensor, intake, phase flanks or installation position outside of tolerance. Interestingly though it said that the fault was not currently present - probably cause I had not started driving the car. Unfortunately I am running DIS from a DESKTOP (we have mac laptops) Going to pop over to BMW in the morning to grab a cam sensor for it and re-fit it, then clear the error log to see if this helps.

Hi there, initially I was convinced that this had made a huuuuge difference - but then a few days later even after putting brand new mobil 1 BMW grade oil in when I made the change - the same thing started occuring. I bought the USB to BMW diagnostic cable off ebay and found that cylinder 1 was reporting a misfire. I reset the error code and ran tests for an hour with the revs never exceeding 2.0k. When I disconnected and took the car for a drive above 2.k, brought the car back

I reset again and took the car for a drive - still misfiring. Still trying to find a solution. Some guys said that when I refitted the ignit coils that I had to do some form of a reset asking me "Were the adaptions reset in the ECU, so it has to relearn". I have not found how to do this, but it may possibly be an option. there is the potential that it may also be because of the valvetronic motor. Do a google search for the 2004 BMW E46 Compact 316ti (1.8 N42 Engine) Idle Control Valve

Jamie Parsons hi there, yes I did. I bought a new timing chain, timing chain guide plate kit, and a tensioner for it, and fitted it all myself. It actually was an easy enough fix and the car went like an absolute rocket after that again. Really really good car!

Jamie Parsons actually I just realised that I still have a chain and plate kit spare here for another one of the N42 engines. It’s for sale at £50, you’d just need to get the new type spring bolt tensioner for it is all. The kit is normally about £180 and is hard to get. I’ll sell my kit for maybe £70

Great video, another dreaded task to be done on my N42. Did it make a huge difference to the stalling and hesitation? I am also trying to cure the stalling and rattling noise. See my vids.

Eh?? How do reckon that this is possible? Have you ever tried - or have you see where the CCV is positioned? Even if you remove the engine indon't see how it is possible without removing the intake manifold. Can you perhaps share how here so everyone else might see and take advantage of your knowledge.

Hi Can you pls help? I have a 2003 318 I Manuel car eas looked after did a compression test all cylinders were over 150 can't remember the name for the presure but it was high well I thought so. The car is leaking oil tru the oil cap just serviced it and the oil was back that's why I did a vopresion test. If you have the cap closed car idles lovely if you open it there is air and oil blowing out. But the high compresion how could there be presure in the sump. Is it the return hose to the manifold? Thanks my good man Danny

Hey Jonny, are you able to give ma some advice/detail on this? I have an N42 316i E46 and when it starts, it barely runs/struggles for about 15 seconds then dies. It may do this twice. On the second or third start attempt, it runs fin (maybe with a little bit of rough idling for a little bit) but otherwise runs fine. Any ideas?
@jonnyweston

Raine Man sounds like either coils are away, or alternatively the timing chain tensioner / guide plate and chain assembly has failed. I did mine on both my e46’s and it absolutely without question resolved similar issues BMW redesigned the chain tensioner, and the guide plate so that they do not fail now. The kit is about £260 for the parts to do this and any BMW dealer will be able to get the part codes off it fairly quickly.
@jonnyweston

Raine Man actually in saying that I think I might have a guide plate and chain assembly down stairs you could have for maybe £120. All you would need is the tensioner then, which is about £15

Hey, thanks for the reply. Any idea what the actual process that is happening if it is coils/tensioner?. The fact that it only does it when first starting and otherwise starts and runs fine all the rest of the time (and has plenty of power, revs to redline well, idles perfectly, engine doesn't blow smoke, engine is quiet (although recently I have noted a rattle when cold at idle). If it is the coils or the tensioner would the stalling and rough running happen all the time, or under load? FYI, I changed MAF, fixed an inlet vacuum leak, run RON 98. Still the same and maybe getting a bit worse. I live in Wester Australia so it is generally warm/hot. It seems to do it less during winter.

The other thing I forgot to men ion that may be relevant, is that when it does the stutter and stall routine, the accelerator pedal has no effect whatsoever. When it restarts, it is fine. Any ideas or advice would be gratefully appreciated.
