Had an E92 full Mpack automatic 320d for 2 years. Bought from first owner who did an amazing job on maintenance. Did maintenance interval myself every 10k km's. Filters and quality oil. Did a remapping giving it approx 200bhp. Drove the absolute sh*'t out of it day after day. But!! Easy driving when engine was cold, gave it time to warm up and after hooning always let it run for a while before turning off. Because of the weight of the car I was not so much impressed by the performance, but it was an amazing quality built car with lots of 'souplesse' and also I liked the automatic gearbox! Never had any issues what so ever! Maintenance is key!!! Edit: forgot to mention, bought the car from first owner at 120.000km. Sold it at 180.000km so drove 30.000km per year...

The tensioner guide is held against the chain by the piston of the chain tensioner. The oil in the chain tensioner provides directional damping by virtue of a non-return valve. In conjunction with hydraulic chain tensioners and tensioning rails with plastic anti-friction covering, the chain drive remains maintenance-free throughout the entire service life of the engine.

Loving the videos pal. I do have a case for you though. I have a 2010 318d with the N47 engine. I bought this just 3 weeks ago and I can tell you, I am really not happy. Everything seemed fine at first, and then the problems started just over a week ago. First I got an error telling me that I had reduced power. I researched why and the outcome was to do an oil change with an engine flush and replace the air filter. Back to normal for a few days. Then, last Saturday morning it wouldn't start. After ten or so tries, it started and then died after about 5 seconds. RAC has been out and gave a few ideas, EGR, DPF etc. had a code reader on and it said the egr was stuck fully open. stripped it down with the cooler off. Started to see that the inlet and everything were just clogged up to death. Egr cooler cleaned and after a soak on the egr itself, the valve was stuck open so got a new one from Lloyds. £200 later and new EGR fitted and cooler back on, filled the coolant up, inlet all off for a manual clean, all put back together but still no joy. DPF off, still no joy. went back to the drawing board and found a thread on bimmer forum suggesting Camshaft Sensor or possible Crankshaft sensor. Now, replaced the Camshaft sensor and we have a running car. It wouldn't rev above 15000 but it would idle and stay running. Changed the fuel filter, as again, this was put on a suggested list. Booked a carbon clean and when the guy turned up, we pushed the car outside and bang, back to square one. The bloody thing won't stay running again, starts and then cuts out after 5 seconds. I have a new crankshaft sensor but as you know its a swine to get to and the tiny Allen key bolt is almost rounded. Gave up and left it sitting in my unit for another day when I can come up with more suggestions. PLEASE HELP, I'm going insane

My previous car was a well looked after N47, and now i have a well looked after N57. No issues so far... The N57 does seem to have a better reputation when it comes to cam chain life despite the layout being basically the same. Part of that IMO is the larger oil capacity, which may offset the effect of the too long service intervals.
@GeorgeAusters

The N57 is the same as the later N47D20C engine which has much less timing chain failures

Agree with you, about changing motor oil.. BMW make mistake with long intervals for service(oil). I own X1 E84 4/2012 XDrive 18d, 105KW/143HP with N47D20C engine. I bought car from first owner, already change chain (at 95k). Before-car was serviced on official BMW service-because warranty.. 1owner changed oil every 25k, once also 30k. Now i change motor oil every 8k, or less/do my self. Because COVID time, do short distances-oil have to be changed more often-engine will say thank you to do this.. Experience with MANNOL oil? Thanks for your time to do all those videos..
@herrbrahms
@herrbrahms 3 жыл бұрын
In my opinion, the oil change interval has mostly to do with how you drive the car, and secondarily with the quality of the oil. I make a point to never cold start the car unless I'm committed to getting the oil up to operating temperature. I also drive a few hundred miles with some regularity, as a diesel should be driven. That, along with a quality Liqui Moly full synthetic 5W-30, enables me to change the oil every 10,000 miles without much worry. When the oil comes out of the drain plug, it doesn't appear much changed from how it looked going in. In my estimation, the key to keeping these engines healthy is to remember that they are diesels and that it is up to you to get them hot enough. If you're just going a few miles, it's better to have a second car running on gasoline/petrol that won't be as slow to heat up. Keep the diesel for longer trips.

Very informative 👍. I have a 2010 316d with 216,000 miles on original timing chain. Would you think the lower bhp models put less strain on the chain and therefore are less likely to fail?
@kirwanjohn101
@kirwanjohn101 3 жыл бұрын
I have the same model as you but needed to change the chain at 150k miles. It was just starting to noise very slightly at cold startup. I've changed the oil and filters every 10k mikes and bought the car second hand. Previous to me was only one owner with full BMW service history. I'd recommend changing it now. It will not last forever. If you plan on keeping the car change it, if not sell it on straight away. They are are lovely and reliable car to drive.

I also have 320d n47 with over 200k on the original chain. Not done any of the work George mentions here so everything is original in the engine. Just done every oil and filter as directed and nothing else. Got the car in 2013 with 70k on it. What a bargain and what a car. Going to do the serpentine belt system soon though cause the original belt is cracking a bit now.

The crank issues may be partly caused by modern low viscosity, low HTHS oils. They are far better for fuel economy than they are for engine protection. Add to that some diesel pollution which is always going to happen and some hard driving thrown in on top for good measure...

Removing the swirl flaps won't give you less torque or worse mpg. You have to reset all adaptation values. For example the 18d models have the exact intake manifold just without the swirl flaps and they have quite the same mpg driving below 2000rpm as the 20d with removed swirl flaps

I totally agree, especially on a premium car like a bmw or benz. The newer b57 is apparently really reliable, the chain, injectors and turbos have been revised so there are pretty much no known issues on it.
