For those that can't make out the difference; listen out for what could be somewhat compared to (in this video's audio, at least) either a slight "shaker" musical instrument sound or a subtle auxiliary belt inconsistency noise. Thanks Headliner for posting this; seen a few videos but it's nice to have a decent before & after for reference. That's the only annoyance with diesels, they're that noisy to begin with that it's not easy to tell when something's wrong or right haha!

I can hear that slight shaker noise if I listen for it, my car has only done 61k miles, I know there was a recall for the tensioner, I don't know if that is still active and I don't know if it's worth only getting the tensioner done or whether I should just get the whole chain kit done. either way my car is over serviced and has an oil change every 6k miles I hear people saying it's a noticable rattle, mine is like this but not as loud. it doesn't sound too worrisome yet and it's been like it for 10k miles, when I bought it I pointed it out but was told it was nothing. it's been a good car so far. might be worth just getting it done. with a new timing chain kit and up to date tensioners how long should the chain last?

I can clearly hear the difference. How many thousand km did the chain change? If there is no sound, do I need to change it?

Thanks for sharing this, mine has a similar sound, but it hasn't got worse since i bought the car. Was it the upper guide rail on yours deteriorating and causing chain stretch? I kind of want to fix mine but also can't be arsed, might just sell it and buy an older bmw with a more reliable engine.

Hi I have a 2009 118 se 2.0 diesel auto coupe has 135000miles. My engine sounds ok but when I pull off (accelerate from stationary) when engine is cold I get a weird swishing sound for a few seconds. Once the car is warmed up it doesn't seem to do it. Is that the chain hitting the guides? Been doing it all this year. Had the car three years no issues. I do very few miles as just a weekend car. But listening to the engine reving it as you have done in the video it hasn't got that background shaker sound as far as I can make out. Many thanks

People who have commented saying "I can't hear a difference" aren't mechanically inclined. That tsk tsk tsk, or machine gun rattle is quite the tell tale sign. My missus' N47 equipped countryman is on about 106k miles and that evident back end rattle is quite prominent in the cold. The fact that it sounds like a John Deere afterwards is indeed how a diesel lump is meant to sound like. If you want to hear a rattly camchain, just rev up any Kawasaki or Honda 600CC supersports from the late 90's or early noughties which has done about 16-20k miles and you can definitely hear the tick tick tick tick sound. On the contrary, my OM646 C220D which has 130k miles doesn't sound as rattly as yours did on start up (or my missus' countryman for that matter). It's just a bitch of a job to do!

I'm wondering if mine problem is the same but sound is more irregular than yours, and I can hear it mostly only on idle. I can hear it louder from the back of the car rather than in front.

I've had thissame infamous swishing sound for 3 years now and i've been kinda worried it's the chain. It's been getting much worse this autumn and today I finally got up to checking it by taking off the belt and the noise is completely gone, no swishing sound. The belt itself was from 2008 and so is the car so the pulleys are likely original too. Bought new tensioner, delfection pulley and the belt and gonna change them tomorrow. Hope this fixes it.

Sounds no different after chain change ??

Hello, the noise is that of many very small metal parts shaking in the background. Is it possible for you to show the old chain, sprokets and tensioner, just to compare the noise level to the amount of wear? Some people say that as long as you keep the engine oil clean you might interrupt the wearing process on all the components.

What year is your car sir ? And what was the milage when you changed that chain ?

Mine was done by bmw on a recall and still sounds the same to me tbh

My m47 sounds so so loud and horrible. But I’d a great engine. It’s done 140k miles with a remap for half of that zero issues and it’s so smooth on the power. Just sounds nasty

I have an N47T one with about 80k kms on the clock. I usually use 5w30 Castrol oil annually or every 10k kms. What mileage do such issues start to occur?

Hello how manny km did he have? I have a 320d facelift 2004, and 228000km and I think about a new chain. It makes not a such noise but everybody tells me I should change the chain in 210 000km

How much does it cost to get the chain replaced roughly? Looking to buy a 2011 520d with 170k on the clock but this issue is putting me off

I hear the same chain sound after the replace. Are you sure they really changed it?

U guys saying u do 1 oil change a year or every 10k miles that’s rubbish. U should try to change your oil every 5k. If u can do it yourself of course. I change my oil and oil filter every 5k and every 10k I change everything. It only costs £80 every 4-5 months which in my opinion is totally worth a healthy engine and peace of mind

when you start the engine you can hear the chain noise for a second without the oil pressure to the chain tensioner

Very subtle difference and quite hard to catch. Anyway, N47 and M47 engines sound just horrible imo. So rattling and unrefined. On the other hand, F10 3.0d is so smooth and so quiet. Almost like a petrol. Day and night difference.

Hello guys, I had the same noise and got the chain replace at 69k. Now it’s at 74k and the noise has come back. The whole kit was changed less that year ago. Also when it was being changed, I went to the garage to see and they showed me there was no slack on the chain. I still changed it completely. Any idea

The N47D20A & C-diesel engine were just terrible. That BMW sold that much of them in different cars, and got away with it still amazes me. Their 6cylinders are very reliable, on the other hand.

My car i have that noise and i have just 120k mile...bmw series 3 and i have one series 1 170k miles its like new chain..

Not sure why people can't hear the difference...I have terrible hearing but I can hear it - before the fix sounds like thousands of little ball bearings rattling around a race....

Took our car to local mechanic for pre mot check ( waste of time really) When we got it back it had a very different sound to engine. Week or so later the High Pressure Fuel Pump failed. Got an idea he ran it without oil or put something through fuel tank to create expensive work for himself plus he sells cars too. No way to prove it but I know he fucked our car.
