BMW remains a strong supporter of hydrogen fuel cell technology and has imported a couple of iX5 large SUV FCEV prototypes to Australia for Chasing Cars to drive.
With 295kW of combined system power, 500 kilometres of range per tank and three minutes to refill between tankfulls, what’s not to like? Especially in a package that doesn’t compromise anything in terms of packaging and practicality.
It turns out that while a hydrogen future might look rosy, its transition to reality is far from easy.
Chasing Cars contributor Dylan Campbell takes the iX5 Hydrogen prototype for a spin to see if BMW’s four decades of hydrogen-drive investment pays dividends in the four-wheeled byproduct.

This is the best looking front fascia of all recent released BMW SUVs and cars.

i would have no problem driving a hydrogen car i had an LPG falcon for years but i will be skipping the battery electric vehicle step i plan on driving my 2022 petrol triton until hydrogen becomes a viable option if it's not i'll buy another petrol car if there is a set date they are getting banned

Why so much hatred in the comments? Hydrogen can be produced from renewable or non renewable sources just like electricity. Could there not be a place for hydrogen in heavy vehicles which really need fast refilling and long range with a heavy load? Can’t BEVs and hydrogen vehicles coexist as complementary technologies?

yeah maybe if someone can crack the decades-old problem of storing hydrogen at pressure, apparently it is damned hard to contain effectively which is one reason why it's been "just about to happen" for so many years now

Using hydrogen to power big vehicles makes more sense than midsize and smaller vehicles. They might figure something out in the future but there isn't a elegant way to put hydrogen tanks into a vehicle

It's hard to imagine hydrogen reaching price parity, let alone being cheaper (which it would need to be to interest me, as one reason I'm interested in electricity is petrol is too expensive), than petrol or diesel, as it seems expensive to make for one thing. I also won't be able to refuel at home, while I'm sleeping, like I will be able to with an EV. Hydrogen may play a part in the future, but for a variety of reasons, not the biggest part.

Clarification: It's an electric car that sucks because it has so many more losses. Oh and that you can't plug in at home.

Hydrogen does not make sense for small vehicles like cars, they are viable for big vehicles like ships or locomotives. If driving an EV gets you range anxiety then get PHEV or HEV. Unless I'm missing something what do FCEV cars have over PHEV or even HEV? Nobody will spend ten thousand dollars more on FCEV cars over PHEV/HEV for environmental reasons alone.

Disappointed in Chasing Cars. Stating that electric cars are powered by coal? Are we still in 2010? EVs are powered by electricity that is increasingly produced by renewable sources. Hydrogen on the other hand is (99.8%) produced by steam reformed methane.

Yep, this guy clearly has an agenda against EVs. Otherwise, he’d have said this hydrogen vehicle is just a weird EV no one asked for.

In Australia fossil fuels still power nearly 70% of the grid. So...what's your concern with a comment that's broadly accurate?

Why not both, battery electric and hydrogen, it seems the internal combustion engine is very, very slowly on the way out....🤔

If only we hadn't had decades of inaction and fear mongering regarding renewables. Maybe we'd be a lot further ahead with this tech and the required infrastructure.

Hydrogen has some fundamental issues with the losses. It's an EV that requires multiples of the energy required per kilometre because there are so many losses..

I kind of disappointed with this short review. BMW cars always drive like a BMW does a highly dynamic vehicle. The review does not mention anything about the safety use of hydrogen! The tires are made from rubber/silica, as it roles , it will pickup negative ion charge particle as the vehicle inside are positively charge. A person inside will be static electricity charged. A million to 1 chance the vehicle will ignite. Why is there a lottery winner every Saturday. A Hindenburg disaster waiting to reappear? In Victoria Australia, Coal fire power generators stations are fast disappearing. Only renewable will survive plus most likely smaller modular nuclear power stations are built under ground. BEV are coming soon with 1000KM range with 500 to 800WHours charging rate (CATL) Model Y Juniper?. The idea of using Hydrogen fuel vehicles dated back in the 1930s.

Can I recharge it at home? Anything less is not convenient. Having to go to a fuel station is not going to be the future for most people. EVs are cleaner than any other car after as little as 20,000kms

refuel just like a petrol car but with the benefits of electric recharging at home is ok for some but not everyone, and for car use that means recharging out in the real world who would choose that, totally not fit for purpose.

@@seth1455let me correct you there, charging at home is perfect for 100% of people that can do it. Going to a petrol station to refuel your car just seems plain silly once you’ve made the switch.
