these are called the "IONIC CONTROL MODULES" But they are also known as "VANOS CONTROL UNITS" will pin your comment to the top so it helps others sorry for not saying what they were called

@@BMWDoctor I have the same issue with my E60 2007 550i.I have an appointment in the morning at the BMW dealer for the diagnosis which will cost me $210 if that's all I need should I tell them to check that piece there that you're mentioning in your video?

thats correct no Nathan changed them once I did it I told him to change them as that was his issue and he couldn't figure it out

Finally someone that knows what I am talking about! ;-) lol I had the same issue with my E60 M5. Saved me a ton of money when I figured it out. Instead of replacing all the coils and sensors. Good Job man!

yeah don't I know mate we have Nathan running round replacing coils when I told him it was this and he's still naive to spend the money and keeps replacing coils. he thinks these modules are only for vanos not for ignition coils and I told him about 100 times now today he will make a video saying about them as if he knew when he didn't he only knew because I told him when I had the issue

but he wont listen as he likes cars with issues and all his modules yellow mine are all green and not ONE fault every little thing has been replaced. he don't want to spend money he wants it to be a cheap fix but BMW there is NO CHEAP FIX well for me there is as everything is on trade so I'm only paying the wholesale price from BMW not the retail price and NO VAT

Also Never really understood why they would put these where they are located. Lots of heat from engine going on there.

I have a 06 and I been chasing the same dam Miss fire on CYN 5, changed the plugs coils and clean MAF and few other things- just ordered a new control unit so hopefully it fixes it.. like you said.. some days it runs fine no issues and other days limp mode on , and CYN 5 mis fire pops up, hope this fixes it once and for all

Could this cause misfire 1-5 , I’ve had numerous things replaced has new plugs , new coils , o2 sensors . Just keep getting misfire 1-5 on my supercharged e60 m5 . Can’t seem to find what’s the cause

I’ve a similar misfire and on cyl 5. Same thing all coils and plugs changed and still a misfire. Although the mechanic done a cylinder test, most cylinders sitting around 110/120 psi but cylinder 5 is at 30psi. Would that be a problem with the control module or sounds more like pistons rings?

I’m having some throttle and acceleration lag on my 2009 BMW M6 S85 with 90,000 miles, I can floor it and it takes a few seconds to get the RPMs up, the problem just started occurring out of nowhere, I had the throttle actuators replaced, spark plugs, coils, injectors, throttle position sensors, PCV valves, SMG clutch assembly, rod bearings, Vanos solenoids, all BMW genuine parts, the Dyno results were 464WHP, any suggestions??

I did indeed and made it very easily by diagnosing, now I will say these don't come up on a diagnostic scanner not even ISTA it just shows as a misfire you have to use your brain to find out how these cars run

@@BMWDoctor Thanks Dean! It's surprising to learn that these modules can't report back to ISTA of their state, as I'd expect this from a generic code reader! Just shows old skool diagnosis and the process of elimination prevails at times of modern technology. I guess dealership appetencies don't get taught this based on 'if it doesn't register on their scanner surely it's not another probable cause' or they just don't have much opportunity based on strict FRU's on what to try out??

No mate what I would suggest is check the coils by switching them. IF the misfire doesn’t move then THIS will be the problem guaranteed !

I have a bmw m6 . With the same issue. Had a code missfire on cylinder 6 . Switch the 2 module's around . Now I have a missfire on cylinder 1. So I no now that the ionic module was bad . Just bought one on ebay. Hopefully that will fix it . Thanks Dr

My BMW E87 has been having a loss of power and delayed response in acceleration for about ayear now. I've been searching everywhere to try and fix it and have taken it to the garage (Halfords) but they were unable to find out what was wrong with the car and advised me to go to BMW. I have done research and people with the same issue who have gone to BMW seem to have been told BMW cannot find the issue. The code CC-ID 29 appeared twice with the half full check engine light in the last year but when the garage has used an engine scanning device both the code and engine disappears. The engine continues to misfire, it jolts while I'm driving as well and sometimes I can hear a rattle from the engine. Does anyone have any idea what this might be? I am starting to wonder whether I should just get rid of the car before it fully breaks on me.

i have the same problem in my Bmw E60 523i 2008 engine Fault Reduce power, i used scanner to check but there is no fault on coil, showing only 2F91 fault code DME engine speed limitation with vehicle stationary please help me.

@BMW Doctor I need help...car goes into limp mode, reduced engine power light CC ID 29, rpm hovers between 500 and 800...codes show camshaft sensor, camshaft stuck, and cylinder misfires (I can send you the read out- P0456, P13C9, P0015, P052B, P054B, P0343, P00AA for confirmed codes)...do not want to get rid of the engine...X1 x28i 2013 140k miles...my cars name is Stealth. I took him in and the service agent said they found metal in the air filter and suggested getting a re-mfg engine...but I had been getting regular oil changes and they didn't say which type of metal....starting here. How can this be remedied please?

Oh yes these will do that like there doing to Nathan right now and he’s replacing every coil and this is his problem yet he ain’t listening to me as he don’t want to spend the money A lot of people ain’t aware these control the electric current to the coils and cause the misfire they all think this is for the VANOS only !! As that’s what most people are under the belief

good man do that if you want no engine lights and want all your modules green mate I'm the man for that as you know Nathan is still having god knows how many lights on that car and faults my car doesn't have ONE FAULT now all modules are green and perfect and I done over 1000 miles already and loving it. Nathan doesn't listen as he don't want to spend money he wants it all cheap cheap and unfortunately he don't get trade discount like I do so parts are very cheap for me

2008 BMW M5 with an automatic transmission The car has about 103,000 miles so on my way home yesterday the transmission malfunction gear come on yellow and then half an hour later a check engine light come on and I receive a code using my scanner and autozone scanner p0175 System to rich bank 2 and p0174 System to lean bank 2 and p2190 System to reach at idle bank 2 -p0325 knock sensor 1 circus bank 1. And p0446 evaporative emission system vent control Circus. And then when i click check control in the car it shows up increased emissions. Help

Dr. I'm getting misfire with cutoff (fuel cut, as in the injector is purposely not activated) on cylinder 9. I replaced all 10 plugs (because it was time), replaced coil on cylinder 9, no change, still misfire. Then swapped bank 1 ionic module with bank 2. Still misfire on cylinder 9 I also swapped cylinder 9 injector with cylinder 6, still misfire on cylinder 9. This seems to indicate the ionic modules are ok. What next? Is there a common wiring issue,or something with tbe throttle body to look for?

Why the m5’s they sound like diesel on idle my e39 m5 was same but I thought e60 sound would improve but i was wrong as I’ve heard a few all same

Just the way they are under extreme HIGH PRESSURE that’s why that’s what makes the power nothing wrong with that There called a quiet beast :) open them up and then forget diesel they become everyone’s nightmare

Yeah don’t you just pull plug of course they would just like a DME I think it’s a stupid place to put controllers if you ask me with all the heat coming from the cover there and the fan constantly on them

The S65 doesn't use these. They are called" ICONIC CURRENT CONTROL UNITS". This video was great though. It made me search the BMWTis for the answer. "I located in BMW tis where is talks about both engines. These units are incorporated into the ignition coils of the S65 for each cyl separately. The S85 has them in the units replaced on this video. So the equal part of the S65 is the ignition coil itself for the S65." Here is a post that also "kind of" leads you to in the right direction. (I can share the post) The above post talks about knock sensing. The units in this video also check for knock feed back. This video is great. But for the S65, just replace the ignition coil.

I got the same problem i stored 6 monthes my 06 M5, after that only 3 mile drive the engine light came "Engine Fault reduce power", and after that i changed all Spark plugs but still the same, i hope it will be fine when i change the module...
