Audi Q7: autoportal.com/newcars/audi/q7/
BMW X5, being one of its much-anticipated SUV, has been launched by the company in an all new avatar in a bid to entice more buyers and set its cash registers ringing at the Indian auto industry.
Embodying numerous overhauls, the Audi Q7 looks fresh, leaner and newer. The emphasis on newer clearly hints at the dissimilarity between current model and its predecessor. With almost all areas being revised, Audi has not left any parameter untouched.
BMW X5 and Audi Q7 stand tall and it's difficult to pin point which is better and which is not. Let's find out how the Audi Q7 and BMW X5 test against each other.

On my 3rd X5 (2010, 2014 and 2017 - each "ordered") and I looked closely at the Q7 when I got my 2017 X5. In fact, I tried to get the Q7 but the Audi dealer wanted more money for a car (off the lot) with a slightly lower MSRP (for a 3 yr 30k mi lease) and would not budge to even make them equal (even tho the Q7 "build" had about $1000 lower MSRP); that pushed me back to X5. I agree with this Autoportal review almost completely. There are a few other things Autoportal did not mention: 1) Wind noise in cabin at Highway speeds: X5 has unnecessary wind noise (experienced in all 3 X5s, reported in all 3 X5s, and never reduced), Q7 cabin is far quieter (even at highway speeds). 2) Even though X5 steering wheel is smaller (which I like), the design of the instrument cluster is such that with the steering wheel at a comfortable tilt/telescope - the top of the steering wheel obstructs the top of the instrument cluster, so even with HUD - some of the indicators on the instrument cluster remain blocked and are not replicated in the HUD (e.g. turn signals, top of tach, lane-drift indicator, etc.) - the Q7 instrument cluster is not blocked at all. That said, the 2018 X5 will probably have an all "display" instrument cluster (BMW's version of the current Q7 display) so, as customizable, this issue may get solved. 3) Drive mode (Sport, Comfort, Eco): here too Q7 takes the lead because it is programmable to remain in the mode selected until changed - in other words, if you prefer "sport" mode, the car can remain in "sport" mode until that mode is changed by a driver. X5 ALWAYS reverts to "comfort" every time the vehicle is started so if you prefer "Sport" mode, you have to manually select that mode each and every time you start the vehicle - HUGE mistake on BMW's part and an EASY fix (just establish a driver selected default setting or make the 3-way rocker to hold its position rather than default back to "Comfort" mode each and every engine start - I gave this exact feedback to BMW on my 2014 X5 [dealer says they got many feedback comments saying the same] and 3 model years later BMW has still done nothing about this obvious FLAW). 4) Autoportal says this, but less directly: While the X5 is by far more the "performance" vehicle (and I think BMW has their mantra right "the Ultimate Driving Machine", I think they make one big mistake: As realistically USED/Driven, these vehicles are more urban luxury (for the most part) over real "performance", the "performance of X5 is amazing for such a heavy SUV but the ride is a bit too stiff - especially for urban bumpy roads. Too much of the bumps transfer thru to the cabin/seats and this could easily be softened a bit to make the ride just a bit softer and more comfortable - drive a bumpy road and you certainly FEEL it. Q7 ride is much nicer in this regard. I think Audi went a bit too far and sacrificed a bit too much of the performance while X5 is a bit too far on the "performance" side so the vehicle sacrifices comfort - and, realistically, it is used FAR MORE on urban bumpy roads than true opportunities to push and enjoy the top-end of the performance scale; so I think BMW could compromise just a bit on the top-end of the performance scale to achieve an urban/bumpy-road ride that is a bit softer and more enjoyable (or at least offer that as an option on "ordered" vehicles). I am not an engineer so I do not know "how much" to move the needle but I would imagine there is a "sweet spot" somewhere shy of max-"performance", with more day-to-day comfort and still not sacrifice as much "performance" as Audi did in the Q7. All said, I think the X5 is by far a better looking vehicle and more "fun" to drive. I would just prefer a slightly softer ride (some of the bumps more absorbed by the suspension - perhaps to the level where drivers would not feel driving over a pencil, which I would certainly feel in even my 2017 X5) even if it means a slight reduction in max (max/high-end) "performance", cabin highway noise reduction, more engineering on the steering wheel/driver-visibility of the instrument cluster and user-settable-default on the drive-mode setting.

Dude, well written! You should start doing reviews. I've driven both extensively, the x5 feels more sporty but the q7 feels a class above in terms of refinement and overall value.
@louritter2809
@louritter2809 4 жыл бұрын
@@gauravdc I leased another X5, after comparing again. The 2020 X5 has been re-engineered pretty much from wheels up. Looks are still quite similar but the driving experience is an entirely new animal - Soooooo MUCH BETTER! The vehicle is now offered with acoustical glass (perhaps double layered - so now very quiet cabin like Q7). The steering wheel no longer blocks instrument cluster content anymore either. Still some idiocy in the "auto stop" (at red lights) and the "drive mode" - both still have factory preset "default" settings that cannot be changed by owners/lessees - therefore requiring driver to press these buttons each and every engine start (if preferring one of the alternate options, rather than allowing owners/lessees change "default" in iDrive); the auto-stop for lights gets overridden by the vehicle itself if the "AC" compressor is on and/or if the transmission is in manual mode (so a full override is certainly plausible - just not "offered"). BMW says these defaults are for "fuel efficiency", but if drivers can change the settings each and every engine start, why not just allow a one-time "default" setting, can require active confirmation that changing the "default" may change fuel efficiency from advertised (but that is no different when changing each and every engine start). There are one or two other little annoyances that could easily be avoided or eliminated - but overall, my 2020 X5 is - BY FAR - the most enjoyable driving experience of any vehicle I have ever driven. The new all "monitor" instrument cluster - main behind steering wheel - is all "monitor" yet BMW STILL allows drivers to choose only about 10% (or less) of the screen area and the rest is "fixed" (unchangeable). This is also sheer stupidity; if it is a display - any and all can easily be user definable (from all potentially displayable content), other than a couple of "required" content like speed, turn signals and odometer. BMW could easily offer a variety of pre-established templates of different content arrangement and also allow full customization (subject to including "required" content). On the flip side, the suspension is soooooooo much better, less stiff (very little of the road travels thru the frame to the seats now) - yet still massively impressive handling and road grip. I got the "M package" this time and that is not the "adjustable" air suspension in the other versions. I do yank the runflats and put on high-end all season radials, this helps too - however, if I had wife and/or kids using the vehicle I'd probably leave the runflats on, but all season radials do ride and drive much better in my opinion. I still think the Q7 is an amazing vehicle as well - however, I have also noticed another difference between Audi and BMW, BMWs seem to keep their feeling of quality engineering longer, as some Audi's do not seem to age as well. Frankly, I only keep them for 3 years on lease (while the full factory warranty covers all other than wheel alignment and tires) - but my neighbor has an Audi 5s and it is only two years old - interior now feels cheep (by comparison to my prior X5s at 3 years lease return). My father also has an A6 wagon for over 6 years that now feels like the interior "tightness" of engineering is also slipping into a cheaper/"creakier "feel". I may re-look at Audi for 2023 (next vehicle) but so far, each time I compare them I lean into the X5. We are all different, with different preferences and/or priorities and having so many vehicles to choose from gives us the opportunities to drive our preferences (within our budgets). For now, BMW improvements far out-weigh the few stupidities, and for "me" the X5 still wins over the Q7 - but I suspect both are "win"(s) as they are both very impressive, and we pay for that. Stay healthy, and grateful we have choices, and an open reality that allows us to enjoy and openly discuss our preferences - not all countries offer such liberties and if we continue to take ours for granted here in US.... (our "slip is showing" and it is not good)

After extensive comparison from tech spec's to actual long test drives- the 2018 BMW X5 xDrive 50i w/most options including the 'M' options w/21" wheels the X5 is an AWD beast upon initial take off/passing another vehicle at 65MPH/hitting the brakes hard at 75MPH and staying glued to the road in severe turns. In comparison the Audi Q7 does NOT offer an engine that compares to the BMW X5 xDrive 50i twin turbo V-8 which provides in excess of 445 bhp unless you switch to the Sport+ mode which is a significant boost from a dead stop. The Audi Q7 felt spongy/sloppy on any type of severe cornering at 35MPH or 'panic braking'. The seats are comfortable in both vehicles but the Audi does get the nod on plush comfort. The BMW gets the nod on 20 way adjustable driver's seat that you can custom adjust to have you feel securely seated w/the side bolsters, lumbar adjusted and leg extension embracing you to your level of comfort w/the seat belt on. You do not 'slide' in a severe corner or stop. After long test drives the Audi is a soccer Mom's ideal vehicle and is a sled when any severe turns are attempted at speeds above 25MPH. The BMW is quite the opposite and almost 'begs' to be driven...NOT beaten but driven w/confidence around any corner or on curvy on/off ramps to or from a highway. The BMW has NO highway noise/ or wind noise at 90MPH+ whereas the Audi wind noise begins around 60MPH-same as several others. Comparing the Audi Q7 to the BMW X5 xDrive 3.5i is fair as the BMW X5 xDrive 50i nearly negates the need for the X5 M w/540+ bhp! Just looking at the vehicles from the front and rear the BMW appears to have the fattest low profile tires out of ANY 2018 SUV (yes, the I loved the Porshe Cayenne Turbo but the cost difference made no sense) and when you look at the Q7, Volvo XC90, Porsche Cayenne, Range Rover, Mercedes GLE they all looked 'normal' until you see the BMW X5 50i w/those road grabbing rear 'slicks'! The BMW X5 is 10" wider at the rear than from the front! Out of all the SUV's I drove the two that were actually fun to drive and had phenomenal sound systems were the Porsche Cayenne and the BMW X5 xDrive 50i and for stupid money the Porsche Cayenne Turbo and the BMW xDrive M would be a blast! Where one could drive them to fully enjoy the vehicles performance is nowhere in my state. The BMW X5 safety ratings and crash test ratings were superior and as much as I wanted a domestic SUV that felt glued to the road, was fun to drive, offered all the various amenities I wanted NONE came close to the BMW X5 xDrive 50i w/the all the various options I selected. Lastly, the integration of the various screens and options you can customize from the driver's seat are MUCH easier and more intuitive in the BMW X5. The Audi, Porsche, Lexus were convaluted in comparison. In closing, I confess to being biased as I purchased the BMW xDrive 50i but before extensive and fair reviews of each SUV I test drove. I was leaning toward the Mercedes GLE loaded up until a friend mentioned he had just ridden in a 2018 BMW SUV w/the V-8 and he was very impressed. So thank you William! FYI- BMW came out w/a BMW X3 xDrive 40i that is supposed to be extremely impressive in all areas. I was VERY relieved when I sat in one and it was a bit to small/cramped for me as I am 6'2" and most of my friends all seem to be at 6' or more and there is nothing more irriataing then two large people rubbing shoulders/elbows for lack of space to spread out! Either way you go, IMHO you will be pleased with any of the above SUV's as the quality sadly puts Escalades/Expeditions to shame. On a positive note, technically you are buying American if you decide on the BMW X5 as it is produced in SC, USA!

I've test driven the new Audi Q7 and I have no idea how you can even compare the interior of the Audi to the BMW. No I don't see how the Audi is supposed to have a "better" interior, IT DOESN'T. Pay close attention to the Q7 interior materials and you will find A LOT more hard plastics than you would find in an X5. The screen in the Audi is far away from the driver/passenger and looks very small compared to the space available in the dash. The screen in the X5 is closer, larger, and looks a lot more high quality than the screen in the Q7 which looks like an after thought. In no way is the Q7 a better SUV than an X5.

Thank you for a comparison video that is to the point and does not drag on and on about unnecessary details. We enjoyed your video, but we wish you took a seat on the 3rd row of the X5, unless you got a 2-row model with sliding 2nd row, if this is available where you live. I don't think sliding 2nd row is available in the USA without 3rd row. Look forward to hearing your 3-row comparison of Q7 vs X5. Thank you.

Mileage and maintenance cost will be certainly better with Dzire. Performance will be better for Ameo. Safety should be either same or somewhat better for Ameo. Ameo diesel is by far the most performance oriented compact sedan in India. Also if thinking of automatics, DSG gearbox is far superior than any AMT. Dzire makes most sense for city driving, with better space and mileage and lower price and maintenance.

Current X5d driver, but as far as the comparison, I'm curious about where BMW is hiding their air suspension, semi-autonomous driving features like lane assist, and rear collision avoidance, infotainment features like Android Auto for the 60% of the non-iPhone owners in the world and 4G connectivity. They seem to be missing here in the BMW, but all available features in the Audi.
