Hello . In this episode you will be able to see how I diagnose an electrical steering box
(EPS) on a BMW z4 that no longer has power steering and for this reason the car can no longer be used, you will see the wiring diagram and how to test the presence of power and communication in the CAN network using an oscilloscope, the whole operation was made in accordance with official BMW procedures in which it required cutting part of the dashboard .

I've been doing this for over 15 years, that's why some things may seem simple in this videos. I have a vast experience working with BMW MINI and Rolls Royce , abbreviated BMW Group , and that's why you may see things that seem impossible or very difficult to do, done easily !

Top tip if you're working alone, when going to re-install the steering column use a couple of jack stands to hold it up until you get a few bolts in. It's a heavy boi and bloody awkward to manoeuvre into place.

Great video of process. I sold my 2003 Z4 , which I loved, because I got nervous with the steering issue. I cannot believe bbw did not address this issue in all of those years! Watching this video confirms that I should stay away from those years - I went though a similar issue with the Porsche IMS bearing issue. Anyway thanks for the video

This video helped a lot, thanks very much! No idea how you got your column out so easily though, I had to remove the motor in situ as I couldn't get enough of a gap otherwise. You also make getting the connectors off the back of the motor look very easy - it took 2 of us about an hour to get them out and had to remove the seat ha!

Salut Ovidiu. Asta e primul meu comentariu scris pe KZfaq. Nu obisnuiesc sa las comentarii dar munca pe care o depui m-a impresionat. Imi place foarte mult felul cum ai garajul pregatit, faptul ca esti foarte minutios si atent la detalii. Si eu sunt la inceput de drum, deocamdata lucrez doar cu ISTA si alte programele pentru diagnoza/codari, dar fara a detine un garaj. Imi doresc pe viitor sa ajung cel putin la nivelul la care esti tu. Te urmaresc cu cea mai mare placere. Spor !

Hi thanks for detailed video. There are a couple of sections that were missing some vital information however. Removing the immobiliser plug. This requires me to destroy it in order to remove it as I wasn’t aware of the locking and release mechanism. Removing the column. I’ve snapped my clutch sporting hook in the process. This requires you to decouple the spline inside the engine bay in order to remove it.

Nice video and you sure do make it look easy. I'm having issues with my steering, but I can read codes with INPA. Getting error 610E and 6124 when I read EPS error codes. These come up even when the car is cold so I think it must be a temp reading error. Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

Absolutely AWESOME video! I bought a replacement steering column on ebay and it came WITHOUT a key. Do you know if its possible to remove/replace the ignition WITHOUT the key? I'm not having any luck with locksmiths and wondering if a dealer would have the capability to remove ignition without the original key? Any advise would be appreciated. Thanks!! nice car, you make it look so easy. do you still do retrofits? Maybe they are a lot more work than repairs. I have a 2013 7 series that is missing several options and always wondered whether it would be worth attempting a retrofit of some of the features like adaptive cruise or lane keep assist. of course you already have videos on this but it's hard to know where to start, what part numbers and programming I might need. of course i'm not asking for anything, I like all of your videos, but if you get any retrofit work I'd love to watch you work on it

Hello Melon , you need to find someone who knows too do retrofit's on BMW in your area and they will doit for you , I still do retrofit's but all depending of my time ... so stay close because you will see many interesting things !

thank you for your video. I have the same problem(e85 z4) but slightly different When under 20°C I put it in acc(not start engine) for the first time, the warning light comes on. After 4-5 minutes, When I remove the key and start the engine, the warning light disappears and the steering returns to normal. Can I get some advice on which part of this might be the problem?

@@edwardkennedy9919 unfortunately I think the electric steering is broken, maybe it was like that before or you have broken it, the steering is very fragile and needs to be divided equally, if not the flat band inside it will break and will have the tork sensor error.

I wondering if you can help me with some advice about my z4 bmw , after several days of heavy rain car start to have problems ; indicators dont flash on dasboard but they still workimg outside, air bag is on , air condisioning stop working no cold air, roof stop working . I check all modules for any water damage but they perfectly dry , roof motor is relokated long time ago than is no water in it, diagnostic dont comunikate wth air bag module , air con , only comunication is with engine , brakes, and claster , what can be ? Hello, you need to properly diagnose that car, and when I say diagnose, I don't mean only to scan the car for error codes. You probably have one module that is using ibus network pulling that network to ground, and the rest of the modules can't communicate between them. That's why you can't see turn signal in cluster

@@MOvidiu Does the part number on the replacement EPS motor unit need to be exactly identical? The part number on the failed ECU part/module (black plastic box attached to the EPS motor) is 0273010011 but the part number on the replacement is 0273010010. Just the last digit is different. I cannot find a replacement with exactly the same number as mines... If the unit requires programming/coding to the car anyways, does it really need to have the exact same part number as my old one? I have the same problem with the steering and have tried most fixes online. I think as you indicated the motor controller electronics is defective. Can u remove the motor without removing the whole column? Trying to simplify my life and send the unit away to the UK for repair. Thoughts would be appreciated.

You have to follow steps until you lower the column, after which you will be able to remove the electric motor from the steering column, but be very careful that if you do something wrong and move it from position you risk breaking the inner band from the torque sensor !! !

⁠@@MOvidiuhow did you code it? I sent my 2005 e motor and ECU and the UK company tested it and both the motor and ecu passed. Fuses and relays are good so I don’t know what else I should be checking for to get the steering to work again. Pls help

Thanks for the video M Ovidiu. Finally somebody does a breakdown of how to remove the EPS on a Z4. You make it look really easy. I have slightly heavy steering on my Z4. The problems all started after I had complete failure of the electrical system and I had to replace the Alternator. Steering has never been the same since. Two elctricians have looked at if but can find no problem with the torque sensor, steering angle sensor, ECU and voltage level. Feels fairly heavy especially at slow parking speeds. Do you think I ultimately need a new EPS? Where are you and can I come and visit to repair.

@@verialstyle zależy co chcesz wymienić?? Cala kolumna to masakra robota! Ale motor to pikuś!! Trochę ciasno nawet bardzo!!! Ale robiłem to kilka razy i w godzinę lekko opanujesz..oczywiście mowie o wymianie, podmianie samego motoru. Wyciągasz zepsuty wkładasz dobry. Jak tylko to to żadnego ściągania kierownicy i innych głupot i nie potrzebnych rozbieran! Ściągasz osłonę w nogach 3 śrubki,dolna osłonę kierownicy 1 śrubka , obniżasz kierownice dla lepszego dostępu;) motor przykręcony do kolumny na 2 torx e10 ( plaski klucz e10 taka gwiazdeczka😉 ) do jednej dojście proste do drugiej trochę gorzej. Ale da się zrobić! ( możesz sprężynę od regulacji kierownicy zdjac dla wygody) Będzie ciasno i ten motor trochę waży wiec uważaj żeby na głowę Tobie nie spadł! Jak będziesz kupował to musi być od wersji EU albo jak masz to Uk to Uk. W Uk za £280-300 wysyłasz stary i naprawia z dożywotnia gwarancją. Nie wiem czy w pl tez. Wydaje mi sie ze w pl mozna kupic uzywke za 500zl ale nie wiem musisz popatrzec.

Pamiętaj ze jak masz wersje EU to nie wkladaj z UK bo w uk jest z drugiej strony i narobi bałaganu dopiero🥶🥶🥶😱 Naprawde nie wiem jak Tobie pomóc?! Hi, juste changed the EPS on a Z4 E85. Unfortunatly, After change and code cleared, the problem is still here. Is this necessary to encode the VIN of the car into the EPS? Thanks in advance

Unfortunately you need another one, is possible that the steering box was bad before you mounted or you have mounted it wrong and broke the ribbon cable for the tork sensor, that error is for the tork sensor!

if you rely on magic it won't work out :) the direction must be aligned before disassembly, and the steering column must be set to 0 , it has 2 turns and a little on the left and identical on the right
