In today's Tech Thursday sponsored by (@_epicbmx), Phu talks about BMX Aftermarket vs OEM Parts 101! He goes into detail on the difference between stock parts [or OEM (original equipment manufacturer)] and aftermarket/signature products, which is stronger, better, and most cost effective. Stems, Sprockets, Pedals, and Forks were covered in this video, but let us know in the comments what other parts you would like Phu to cover in the next videos!

I think it's the brands standards that make the parts what they are. I'd go with Trek oem before walmarts aftermarket shelf. 💪

Forged is a lot stronger that cast... while cnc is a process. You can cnc both forged and cast work piece. Another process is heat treatment. After finishing/cutting the work piece. It will be heat treated(not all the finished work pieces are being heat treated and it makes the price of the item more) Just my 2 cents.

Some really good points, but for you new riders, just cause he said “they can still get sued if it brakes so it’s gotta hold up” doesn’t mean that the parts on your $250 complete are just as good as custom aftermarket parts

Back in the day like late 80s early 90s aftermarket parts were the way to go because they made them stronger than what was on the bike when you bought it . Company’s like Revcore , DK , made hardcore parts ACS were great to .

Video idea. Not sure if anyone would be interested, but how about a video on the old school 80's and 90's BMX freestyle scooters? Just got my Mongoose back from sand blasting. 16" Tuff wheels, so its adult size. Bought it for $100. Its made some time in the 90's. Got some Tech 77 locking levers for it, and some Dia-Compe MX1000 calipers. Going to fit a gyro, and Vans tires in traditional camo. I think it will be fun. Has to be better than new school scooters doesn't it? There's the video lead line :D

Phu didn’t cover frames after market versus completes so my question is can I get the same geometry that I like on aftermarket on completes now
@muifly4892
@muifly4892 3 жыл бұрын
Yes, a lot of companies use that for advertising their completes. However, the oem frames often are heavier, lack features like integrated seat clamps or chain tensioners or are not heat treated to save some cost and make the aftermarket frames more attractive to buy.

Kinda didn't answer the debate the best. Most after market forks for example are better then oem things. And yes some bikes are specced with aftermarket stuff as oem parts. But I'd look at it more like generic joytech hubs vs say odyssey hubs. Pr old q lite generic hubs 3 pawls. Vs the aftermarket ones shadow and wtp used to sell that used 6 pawls. These days it is better with bikes like the envy. But if we go just a tier down to un named generic chromo frames and parts there can be a quality difference. Things like offset butting in a downtube can make a huge difference in a frame.

Phu touched on the fact that in China and Taiwan the labour force come from rural areas to work in the cities and are paid peanuts and the minimum workers rights and health and safety are a lot less beneficial. Remember that bmx and bike parts is a business and ethics is still in question!

people really think material is like a big factor when buying parts or in anything in general. obviously one will be stronger than the other, but no one would sell something if it always broke.
@maxcatmur-hill4239
@maxcatmur-hill4239 3 жыл бұрын
Very true, but lower end bikes don’t use the strongest materials as they ‘aren’t designed’ to do as many big tricks, so may not last as long as aftermarket chromoly for example. Still last a decent time tho for sure
