I'm sooooo lucky to have grown up and raced bmx in the 80s! Wooooo

My '82 Quadangle was baby blue also. Mine didn't have the looptail, and was made from manganese molybdenum. Even had a sticker saying don't get near an open flame. RL flight cranks, CW bars & Araya rimed wheels. bringing back memories!! I remember even being denied starting a race cause I didn't have a pad for top tube, as none would fit.

Man, what happened, the 80's BMX and mid to late 80's Bones and Vision skateboards, such a vibe. I cut my own Vision clone skate board and road it with big black Bones street wheels until I cracked it in half... it all stopped for me in high school in 1987. What years were sponge grips with no flange on the inner edge used? Never saw those before. You don't need the inner flange now because tracks are all downhill... no side to side pumping... I have some original gold Arayas... my Mongoose motomag was baby blue and gold with torker handlebars and takagi 1pc cranks and the gold araya rims, a shotgun II seat and the gold ribbed seat post and replica walmart gold horshoe pedals, walmart forks, and walmart replica brakes with the californian stickers... now it's all show chromed and polished all original except switched wheels with my brother and got new longer cranks because my brother has my originals and got a new layback seatpost, new grips, new chain stays, new hubs for those classic araya rims, i had the rims polished they were matt aluminum, i never rode them because they had a coaster brake and the gold araya's were cooler, new handlebars and forks, original from what I rode as a kid are the frame, the wheels, the seat, the seatpost clamp was on my brother bike, I didn't put the original brakes on, the neck is original walmart replica... I have my original walmart forks but they are in a box somewhere... my brother has the same kind of bike but with 3peice takagi tourney cranks and a real tuff neck... web.archive.org/web/20160331234409/olderbikes.com/restorations/1980-mongoose/ A friend who was older where I grew up in IL raced for SE and I remember pretty clearly one day when he pulled up into my friend's driveway with a truck load of all kinds of SE bikes including a quadangle, a PK, and a cruiser, he was dating my friends older sister... I remember the baby blue and camo pads from that era... I think another friend has one of the original PK frames that another friend was riding at that time sitting in his basement, he bought his son a new PK and takes him to the local track. My dad could have got me a PK frame to build but the guy at the bike store said the motomag was a stronger frame, that was my luck back then, it still gets me that my dad turned down a PK frame I wasn't with him when he got it obviously.

I always wanted a PK Ripper since the 80s. I bought the first 20" re-release they came out with in 2008???? But I was still a bit big for it. Ended up buying a 26" Hutch some years later. When SE came out with the polished aluminum 27.5 PK Ripper that was it for me. I sold everything and thats my one bike.

SE always made great bikes, but the PK RIPPER was their greatest bike and probably the most iconic BMX bike ever made. From the time I got into BMX in 1981 until I sold my GHP(Greg Hill Products) bike in 1987,the PK RIPPER was the BMX bike I saw more of than any other. The QUADANGLE was a great and very different frame design, but I didn’t see many of them. That was the difference.

I had both. Well, I still have my PK frame. I’d say it was a good thing that I had gotten the unpainted frame, since I had it re-welded at least 4 times, maybe 5. Always cracked where the bottom chain stay joined the flat/ oval tube coming back from bottom bracket tube,,, lol. Once it cracked the seat tube where it intersected the top tube, landed hard one time and I hit the seat hard enough it flexed and cracked the top half of the weld. What I hated about that frame was that it had the smaller seat post diameter and was limited on what seat/ seat post combos you could get, I was always stuck with the Uni seats,,, lol. Light as hell, but man they where uncomfortable, especially the 1st gen, that rectangle-ish thing,,,. Then I got the Quad Angle, man that son of gun was stiff,,, but it never cracked!. I have always been the type of person that didn’t follow trends and want the same things everyone else wanted because it was popular,,, that’s how I ended up with SE frames, they were definitely different. The PK was mill finish (raw alum silver) and nowadays I know, but man I wish I had tried polishing it, it would have looked bad ass. One time a took some 1" electrical tape and cut hundreds of squares and did a checkerboard pattern all over the frame, from 5 foot, it looked good (for the first couple of weeks) and People always tripped out on it thinking it was painted that way,,, but it was cool for the time. Like I said, still have the PK frame, I’ll put something together someday, but I need to to find the obligatory Landing Gear with the old style neck tube, not the pinch bolt kind. Anyways, glad I stumbled onto your channel, keep it up.

I had a quadangle with landing gear forks (with the extension on the top curve). Always thought that was the coolest frame design. Damn wish I still had that bike.

I've owned Quads since middle school. My first one had gotten stolen from my porch while I was eating dinner. I didn't get another bike until I went to college for me to get around campus. After I graduated I got the SE DC 24, then the Monster Quad. I do want a PK though. I'm looking at the 27.5 Perry Kramer. I think that'll be my all around bike.

Quadangle. I'm a Stu slappy. Was my favorite racer as a kid. He always made every bike he rode look good but SE was my introduction to racing. Never saw one in person as a kid, only mags. Both bikes are worthy thou.

Nice collection. I had the biggest collection of vintage bmx on Floridas west coast at one point with well over 100. Sold most to buy a house but still have a few gems left like an all OG 87' Dyno comp and a limited edition chrome Quad 24" loaded with Profile parts. The rarest i owned was a Wal Riot, bashguard bikes of every make, white and pink Trickstars, 81' kos cruiser, a Trickstar2 , Haro Masters, GHP cruiser and many more. Most sold locally to collectors. The prices now are just insane.

Do you own an old school aluminum Race Inc. and if so, I would love to see a video on it. Bill Bastian made frames for many of the other companies besides his company, Race Inc. Including the first PK's along with Cycle Pro, Kawasaki, FMF, Raleigh, Peugeot, Webco, and probably some I'm leaving out. I still own my childhood 1979 Ra8. Love your videos, keep em coming 🤙🏼

Love the bikes, and like what you've done to them to add your own personal touch, I've always been a fan of the landing gear forks as they were pretty much indestructible back in the day. I'm happy to be the first like for the video. Like you, I love the loop tail frames from back in the day.

Completely agree with you.THEE MOST ICONIC BMX BIKE…EVER! So many street riders had them when I was riding a MONGOOSE SUPERGOOSE in 1983/84.That BLACK & GOLD combination that SE did of the RIPPER in 2017(you can still see Perry Kramer advertising it on KZfaq) was sweet,as was the 24 inch QUADANGLE cruiser that SE released in that same Black and Gold combination. As you can imagine, both bikes were sellouts,so I hope SE rerelease these bikes again in those colours.

I don't remember ever seeing foam grips and never saw any oldschool grips without an inner edge like that... they had the foam rings that went on the inner edge so you could pump hard and not get blisters.
