“I before e except after c or when sounding like a as in neighbor and weigh” only applies to like 97 (or so) of the many hundreds of words that it should apply to. Welcome to the English language, it’s broken because it’s Frankenstine’s monster as a language. We took words from other languages and rather than shaping them to fit an established grammar we just took the grammar from the other language too. That’s why we have so many ways to make plurals and so many homonyms. Thanks for coming to my TED talk
