This will seem like a completely left-field suggestion, but you should definitely check out Orville Peck. He does some of the most amazing indie country I've heard in a lonnnng time (and he's also hella gay and loud about it and I love him because he makes insecure men uncomfy lol). "No Glory In the West" is a favorite you might want to start with! :D Yeehaw! ;D

@@andrew20146 Yeah, he's for sure talking about Celebrity Lip Sync Battle, which features multiple instances of the 'guy in drag doing a woman's song, but he's not...' - a couple of great examples include Channing Tatum (who faced off against his wife, iirc) and Tom Holland going up against Zendaya. Tom performed "Umbrella" by Rhianna and kinda killed the fuck out of it, honestly. lol At the same time, though, I see what Bo's saying. We have a finite amount of time on this earth and we should try to use it as best we can and corporations greedily want every second of that they can steal.

Country music can definitely be earnest and even subversive-- especially with contemporary artists like Kacey Musgraves, Orville Peck, Le Ren, Babeo Baggins and others-- but so-called "stadium country music," which is sadly the most popular in the genre-- are exactly what Bo showcases here: shallow, cynical cash grabs exploiting an audience who sadly does not know better.

From Charley Crockett to Tyler Childers to Colter Wall to NIck Shoulders to Kassi Valazza to Sean McConnell to A J LeGrand to Charles Wesley Godwin to Logan Halstead and Cole Chaney. Omg did you 69 nice yourself? You're a mega dork (don't worry, that's why your channel is so nice, feels like listening to a friend versus getting a scholarly lecture - which i also respect and enjoy but the familiarity is super refreshing). What's so nice about Bo is he sings this incredibly meta song while still making art. He has a full legitimate song that's so self aware. He's referring to celebrity lip sync battle and you 100% should unironically do a reaction to Tom Holland's Singing in the Rain/Umbrella mash up (versus Zendaya, his Spiderman co star). It's amazing. Its not like funny haha he's doing Umbrella, its omg this boy commits and can dance.

The part of the song I think most people just skim by, that I think is brilliant is, as he goes into the second verse, he says, "I'm hoping my southern charm offsets all these rapey vibes I'm putting out." Then in the verse he says, "We go to bed, YOU DOZE OFF, so I take your country girl clothes off..." That is rape, (or a serious sexual assault, at least) and I think it gets overlooked because he follows up with the comedy line, "It's a fucking scarecrow again."

@ReapingWillow
@ReapingWillow Жыл бұрын
Your comment is a year old, but I can't help but to leave this anyway.... Your graduating class had 21 kids!?!... Yeah, that's the absolute most that any grade I was ever in came close to having. My school was Pre.- 12th and was extremely rough academically because of the student to teacher ratio. This school was one of the best in the country in school averaging for government testing. Which isn't as big of a deal asn9t sounds when you consider the fact that at one point if they lost a single student the school population would drop under one hundred students then they would be shut down. 🤭 Thats what happens when you give children 8 classes every day, and no free periods. You didn't graduate unless you had at least a 3.5 GPA and no less than three extracurricular activities. One centered on what I call "Hillbilly Business" which was either either FBLA or FFA. (Welcome to the country)... Then of course an academic one such as Debate, Mathletes, 3rd language (secondary language was already mandatory) and the other was a Sport. Life was not fun there. Everyone was absolutely horrible. So yeah... People dropped out or failed out left and right. You didn't even graduate with honors unless you were only 16-17 years old, and taking a Running Start program at the university. Sufficient to say that yeah, I definitely get it. My graduating class had a total of 5 people in it. 🙄

Is it anymore mindless than watching some random person on the internet watch your favorite comedians and listen to your favorite music etc? I mean, I'm here, but the fact that reaction videos are as popular as they are points to something just as insidious.

@@seanmatthewking idk I watch probably a dozen reactions or more all of the same thing in a row (my mom really hates Welcome to the Internet now cause that was like a 3hr playlist) and it reminds me of when I took my history or lit seminars. Some reactions focus in on different details, some overlap in agreement on specific points, some openly state opposite ideas (like the guy who took all of Inside literally omg). That being said, if you're entertained, then it's entertainment, right? Doesn't have to be art to entertain. At least it's not starving lions and men with increasingly duller blades. Shakespeare is art and he was the ultimate king of dick jokes. He had more sex jokes than someone escorting to pay for clown college. Some of the lip sync battle performances were amazing. I will forever rec Tom Holland's Singing in the Rain/Umbrella performance. Spidey boy killed it.

@@maisonfuller4382 communism is designed to oppress all people not apart of the government. Also if you believe that's what capitalism is, it only means you're not trying hard enough to succeed. Communism prevents all people that aren't in power from ever living above mediocrity at best and in every case it's been tried, it leads only to poverty and death.

Spot on reaction like usual! It's sad that's what become of a lot of music lately (not just country anymore) but since it gives these labels more money than they know what to do with, it's not likely going to change. And even sadder, most of these artists didn't start that way, they had their own thing that worked at the start but quickly went downhill, so to stay in the spotlight, they gave in and went the cookie cutter route. Which works, unfortunately. On a side note though, I'm not sure if anyone else has this issue with the reactions lately. Your audio volume is fine but the video you're reacting to is pretty low so gotta turn the volume up to hear it better. So when you pause and start talking, it's pretty loud. Are you able to bring the volume of the video you're reacting to up a bit to match yours?

I also live in a small town, across the street from a farm. Just over 100 people in my graduating class and so many people listening to this. So many of them were also wealthy and would never be caught on a farm, just trying to be small-town cool 😎

The weirdest is Keith Urban, an Australian singing country with an American accent, with the most ironic last name.

“I write songs for the people who do jobs in the towns that i’d never move to” is the perfect thesis for the song. From age 10 i grew up in a farmhouse outside of a midsize town in central illinois, so I know exactly what you’re talking about 😂 My city was big enough to have a more diverse population and culture, so while country music is pervasive, rap and pop was by far the most popular genre, but there was a presence for basically every genre, so i never felt *too* out of place. But this kinda sums up my general dislike of bro-country music.

In fairness, there are tons of great country songs and many great country artists but he skewers the type of performers he is talking about. Artists like Dolly Parton, Willie Nelson, Kathy Mattea, Mary Chapin Carpenter, etc. are outstanding song writers. Check out songs like Clear Blue Morning, 9 to 5, He's Alive, Lonesome Standard Time, Clown in Your Rodeo, This Kiss, I Take My Chances, etc.

While I absolutely love Bo's Country Song, in reality I don't really think we should be critical of today's country music stars because they're singing about subjects that they themselves don't do. Because they've been doing that forever. How many of our older classic country singers sang about bull riding or truck driving, who never actually did any of that? How many rappers sing about doing gangster shit who've never actually done any of that shit? (Yes, Im aware that many do actually do the gangster stuff. And their dumb asses usually end up in prison) The point of their music is for it to be relatable to other people out there. Not that the music singer themselves have to necessarily relate to it as well. If a singer sings about something profound such as child abuse, does it matter that they themselves have never been abused as a child, or otherwise been involved in something like that? No. Don't get me wrong, it probably benefits the singer if they do actually have those experiences, such as abuse or working on a ranch or being on the rodeo circuit. But that doesn't have to be the case. And it usually isn't.
