Just wanted to touch on the last part since I got caught up in everything else. Totally okay with artists taking advantage of that formula as long as it's not hurting others. Once it gets to the point where people are starting to think they need to change based off of what they see or hear in media or that they're not good enough or parasocial relationships getting out of hand, that's when it becomes a problem. Reaction starts at 0:22

I second the suggestion to watch the music video. It’s a work of art. I was on a music drought until Inside came out, and the only music able to pull me away from my Bo obsession have been Lil Nas X and Billie Eilish. And that fascinates me, because I have never much cared for “pop” music and I’ve especially never much cared for female singers. There’s just something about the tone and cadence I prefer from men, but she’s been able to break through that 40+ year habit. And Lil Nas X is just amazing and pure.

the video is also a work of art, but it is only missing the part where he gets the audience to "repeat stuff, repaat stuff" long enough for him to do the Nazi salute and I think that bit will go down in history in comedy specials.
@seralynda2 жыл бұрын
Great video - I just found your stuff and I'm enjoying it. :) One note on the N*zi salute - I don't think he's trying to directly suggest such musicians are exactly like that. Rather, he's drawing on the idea that simple slogans, like sloganism in general, have frequently been a domestication tool of fascists and dictators, and this can work as part of a powerful set of tools for domination in general. Getting people to nod along and recreate toxic ideologies, especially if those people are unaware they are even doing that, can have deeply disturbing consequences. So, for example, it's unlikely that every boy band singer who puts out music like this genuinely wishes teenage girls would consume media that makes them feel bad about themselves and hate themselves, so that the singer can "get paid tell" them that he loves them. Yet, that's exactly what can happen, and Bo is making this connection. In this way, artists who don't mean harm actually end up contributing to the normalization of a deeply toxic and damaging set of ideas that has real impact on people in the world (and especially kids and teenagers). Sorry for the long comment - as striking as that visual is, it's actually pretty genius. No surprise, though, because Bo is so, so fantastic. :)

I know you have probably listened to the last song, but it’s crazy how much Bo talks back to producers of comedy shows and the big wigs in charge of it all. I still find comfort in the 90s music that I grew up with. I can't not love those songs. I remember reading recently that Bo struggled with panic attacks when performing live and I actually think you can see that a little bit at the beginning of this song when he is being himself and talking so quickly, like he needs to get it out and then tries to shake it off as he goes to his stage persona. I watched Bo growing up, but I never would have known, only as an adult that has struggled with anxiety do I see the signs now. I unfortunately have never seen him live, and I hope that I get to one day.

this song reminds me of a problem i think with modern games. i barely remember any music from most video games nowadays, unlike older games. and i think part of it is, newer music is longer, and thus doesnt loop as much, and every area of a game tends to have its own music, so you dont hear the same track multiple times etc. some video game earworms i have from my childhood are NES games stage 1 musics because every time you start the game or or game over and get sent back to the start, you hear it again. so you end up with the music ingrained in your brain lol idk repetition good? maybe? sometimes?

@JesusOfPaign2 жыл бұрын
This is one of the songs where I think he makes a good point, and delivers it very well-I love the breakdown/bridge section, those lyrics are so heartbreaking and haunting to me-but it’s kind of a simplified portrayal of a much more nuanced issue. Like you and other commenters have said, there are PLENTY of truly creative artists making pop music. In fact, two artist who are frequently bashed for being lame pop artists, Billie Eilish and Twenty One Pilots, are legitimately talented and creative songwriters, and have created their own incredibly unique sounds. Which I think is the mark of a great artist, when you can hear a song and immediately know who it’s by. Not to mention, the criticism of “all these songs have the same four chords” is kind of a misguided, elitist, faux-musical-intellectual type of thing to say. Like, someone who is predisposed to disliking popular music heard that Axis of Awesome song and thinks it’s some hidden skeleton in the closet of pop music, and uses it to justify bashing all music that isn’t the specific genre they like. But anyone who actually knows music would know that this is a non-argument. There are only so many progressions you can come up with, especially if you’re trying to make it sound pleasant, be easily understandable for anyone with no musical knowledge (i.e., not be musically complex; most people don’t enjoy jazz because a lot of what is interesting about it requires knowledge of music to even BE interesting), and it needs to have a simple and catchy melody. You’re pretty limited in what progressions you can write. For a pop song? You essentially HAVE to start on the I chord. And from there you only have so many options that are simple without being too simple. So the fact that so many artists landed on a I-V-vi-IV progression makes perfect sense. Every great artist sees chord progressions they like and straight up copies them, because the chord progression is just the barest bones of the song, it’s not the whole thing. I don’t even think Bo feels particularly strongly about that point, it’s just a quippy, scathing, little jab he can throw in there for the sake of the song’s theme, not necessarily because it’s something he believes is a problem or matters at all.
