Love letter is my favorite game! One of my group chats is literally called “Do you have a Handmaid?” 🤣

I spiced this game up by buying a second deck and just literally shuffling the two together. The absolute despair of drawing a Princess as you already have one in hand is glorious.

As a note, Love Letter is best when everyone knows what every card does.

I like that game a lot. We are playing it mostly between two bigger games. Also when a couple of my board game group married the others made a costum game with us as the characters, writing the effects in a way they mirror our personality a bit.

I've played a bunch of different versions of Love Letter and my 2 favorites are the Archer version and LoveCraft Letter. Archer has way more interaction with the card you set aside and LoveCraft introduces an insanity element to the game. Every card has a sane and an insane version of it. The insane version of the cards are better but playing them is risky because they turn you insane, which is bad. I like both of them more than Vanilla Love Letter

If you like Love Letter, you should consider trying out Lovecraft Letter! It’s basically a more complex version of the original game, with a distinct eldritch horror spin. To be honest, my family plays Lovecraft Letter more than the original game

IMO this game definitely works best as just something to carry around in your bag and take out when you and whoever you’re with want to play something.

The one comment I have about the chancellor/spy mechanic is that I believe those were added with the intention to increase the potential player count and they're balanced for high-count games. I have the same preference as you for classic edition...in games with only three or four people. Playing with five or six people and having a spy and chancellor is so cool because to me it INCREASES those dramatic moments. Nothing like having someone almost written off come roaring back into the game all of a sudden to make people sweat. Also with more people, the spy wins a point so infrequently it's honestly astonishing when it does happen.

Our family has played love letter hundreds and hundreds of times, any child old enough to read can play up to grandmas but theres still strategy to be had and rounds go super super fast so you can play once or on and on its brilliant

what i misunderstood about the spy is that you only get the extra token IF you actually remain in the round. Meaning if you get rid of the person who played the 2nd spy your first card is still valid. You have to either win or let the deck empty out in order the spy to matter at all. It also means people who played spies have targets on their back as it incentivizes which person to priest on or yolo Baron snipe if forced to.

I'm not sure if you take requests, but Dice Forge and Asteroyds are 2 games I highly recommend

A real shame that no one mentioned the "sequel" lost legacy. Fantastic series of games that are all the 24 cards with alot more eliminations and gotcha moments

We have a homerule for the spy since there is little counterplay. To actually get the spy point you also have to survive to the end.

The bag makes it more portable? I'm surprised to hear ProZD say this. I've been reluctant to pick up this edition because I imagine the cards would get crushed inside of a simple cloth bag when I try and transport this game. Seems far worse than just a solid small box.

Every night there is a party at the palace. You were not invited. You and your friends have snuck in when the party was nearly at capacity, and the guards have now locked the place down. Quickly! You must act natural, find someone and mingle. Each of you carries a letter of undying love for the princess, each letter so sweet that she will cherish it forever. But she gets bored quickly so after one letter she's pretty much done for the day. Your goal is to get your letter to the princess before any other letter. To do that you must win the trust of someone close to her by staying until the end of the party. You may even have a chance to give her the letter yourself. Your card represents you current interlocutor, and drawing a new card is bumping into someone new at the party. Playing a card is sending that person away. "Guard, who's that over there with the duchess", you might say, or "Handmaid, sing us your traditional milking dance?" .... I've been fiddling with this alternative way to motivate the theme and tie it into the mechanics a bit more. People really appreciate that, as it becomes a bit less abstract. And it's great cause you get to do the voices. In fact, it's now a rule to do the voices. Needs a bit of work in the delivery though.

If i get this version and remove the cards itll feel so weird to have the princess be at 9 :/ When i played, i just know all of the cards so i use normal playing cards ace to 8.
