He walks us through old tow boards, Kelly Slater designed boards, his arsenal of Jaws boards that he keeps at friend Ian Walsh's house and introduces us to his friend and shaper, John Carper. This episode is an incredible behind the scenes look at the career of one of surfing's most talented and diverse professionals ever.

I remember randomly picking up a VHS movie called 'In God's Hands' at a local shop because I saw it was about surfing. Been following Shane's career ever since. What an incredible athlete.

Yes...Wave Tools.I`m from Costa Mesa and my first board (5`8" tri-fin 1981 or 82)was also shaped by Lance,the shop was a block away from my house.

the part with the surfers in a circle, who was that for? (if you dont get what i mean, then when a surfer dies or somebody who has had surfing in their life, there funeral is basically all the surfers in their community will get together and hold hands on their boards in a big circle.)

Nice backstrap Shane. Elk, DEER, moose are all over the place here in Utah. The meat can't be sold commercially by law. Sooo tasty. Would much rather eat one than have it die totaling another one of my cars. LEGEND!

I'll speak out too - these people feel more (fake) grief for dead animals than for dead people involved in the making of their iPhones (yeah, I have one too). They're the same people who will not only eat meat occasionally but will then ruthlessly bully a hunter who was also a youtuber until she commits suicide (this happened in Spain some months ago). Why don't we stop bullshitting each other about ecology and animalism, and realize once and for all that our world is based on capitalist exploitation (affecting us all), a system that loves, and thrives on, useless ideas about charity, ecology, fair trade, animalism... and all the useless criticism associated with them. That's the only reason people will spend time and energy criticizing a single individual for having a healthy (and, by the way, very ecological) hobby besides surfing monster waves. Peace to ya'll!

Well, I probably didn't explain myself very well... for you - I took for granted that you guys would understand that the very existence of "fair trade" as an alternative helps Capitalism get rid of its negative idea of "consumerism" excess, let alone the idea of "exploitation" as only taking place in sweatshops, etc. That is, "fair trade" (although being a good thing, don't get me wrong) functions, in the last instance, as the "human face" of the system, which is perfectly confortable with having such a label, just as "organic", "vegan", "radical feminist", and so on... The system thrives on this things because they give an appearance of struggle against the system, while the very core of it (the fact that we are only free to exploit or be exploited) remains intact. I may be wrong, but I understand all of this I'm saying. Peace.

Just so everyone knows: Trophy hunting is where you shoot the animal to take its head, or horns, and leave the rest. I don't know this, but I have a hunch that Shane doesn't give 2 FUCKS what you think about him. He only cares what his wife, his son, his friends, and God think. He shadowed this a little bit by saying "Wow, its crazy to think that 8 years ago, every time Teahupoo got big, I was on the first flight over!" which decoded means.......I used to be way more into risking my life for no apparent reason, but compared to today.......I can just go hunt and I don't need to run the risk of making my wife a widow. Shane has matured so much over the years as a surfer, a dad, a big wave hellman, and as a hunter! My grandpa had 40 + pairs of antlers in every basement of all 3 houses he owned. Hunters are wired differently. For fun, they go places most wouldn't, covered in deer piss, armed with a bow and arrow. The same kind also surf 50+ foot waves. Give respect where respect is due. At least hes not like most of us, who know how sick the meat market is for the animals and us as well, but continue to eat it anyway. This man has integrity. Shane Dorian, a good friend of mine, from Koloko, Big Island. Kona, Big Island!

Disagree. Hunting for food is OK done humanely and if you waste nothing. Bow hunting is incredibly cruel. The animal may walk around with an arrow in it in agony for an hour before dying. Shows total lack of compassion and intellect. If you are going to hunt, make the kill fast and as painless as possible.

james - for eating I can buy but trophies are pretty strange. Ted Nugent does it but what if there are ET's that like human burgers and steaks. Can't get around the karma if it plays the other way. Free will and choice, bottom line.

james - that is why I do neither. This doesn't mean it's for everyone but if humanity isn't the top of the food chain begging for mercy might not hold much weight if you become the target for a meal. To each their own.

No problem with hunting to eat, but keeping those heads like trophies is gross. I don't see the point of it. If you have respect for the animal you're killing, don't keep his head on your wall like a trophy. Be humble about it. On the other side. People who are disgusted, shocked or mad at him for hunting: If you guys aren't vegan or vegetarian, then think about it. You guys pay other people to do this job for you and kill animals so you can eat meat. You're so disconnected from the food you eat. Think about it really.

Why not bring that epic story of the harvest back to your home. Every time you look at the mount youll remember what it took to get that animal and remember how much it fed your growing family. Take it all home and leave zero waste.

I love him he's my favorite surfer! I didn't agree with the hunting part but I'm not going to have ago at him because if he likes it cool! I just don't like it.
