Why does full care horse board cost so much? I break down the feed, hay, shavings, and facility cost for boarding a horse.

I'm in SE Pa and your costs are about 1/2 of ours. We are lucky to break even! The costs are still COVID prices and will continue to increase. Gotta Love what you do😊

Good eye opener for someone thinking about having a horse or two just for themselves. Stable boarding here runs $650 a month minimum for 1 horse. That doesn't even include rotation from pasture to stall.

Tim, what about the vet and ferrier? Do you have to cover them as well? Does the owner have that responsibility? Worming. Teeth etc. You have a beautiful facility there. A horses heaven. Thanks for sharing, have a wonderful day

The owner covers the vet and farrier costs. I cover the worming because I want to make sure everyone gets done together and stays on schedule.

Your quote was cheap for some of the quoted that I've heard! And your facility is a lot nicer! I definitely didn't board there! It's nice to hear it broken down like that to give an idea of the actual cost!

You also have to take into account profit margin. Based on his number Id double it and that’s what I would charge. He didn’t include his salary.

I know this has been out there for a while but just ran across it. I love your training videos Tim and appreciate you sharing your knowledge with us aspiring trainers. One question on this video about buying grain. Many of the boarding facilities around here have the owners buy the grain or they charge additional. Is the grain included in your monthly boarding fee?
@timandersonhorsetraining
@timandersonhorsetraining 8 ай бұрын
I include the grain and do not give a discount if the owner provides it. With the extra time and space needed to feed a different feed it cost me just as much to feed if the owner furnishes. Also I rarely accept a horse for training without putting it on my feed program. Owners generally don't understand the different nutrition requirements needed when in training.

@@timandersonhorsetraining Thanks Tim, I really appreciate the advice and makes sense especially considering the nutritional requirements of a horse in training. Have a great one!

Curious about initial cost of setting up a facility?
@timandersonhorsetraining

That is going to depend drastically on location and the facility you build.

Thank you for this! I have a 23 stall barn with a large indoor in Pa. I rented it out to one party for several years. I cringe at the thought., but I’m planning to offer self care once I have it cleaned up. Your video gave me a clue on the cost these days. I’m wondering how costs will or won’t differ from yours. I’m near NY, NJ and Philadelphia. I’m really trying to figure out what a fair amount for self care would be.

I've been at barns up in MA & FL rough board self care board is tough I've seen people not buy grain hay or even clean stalls & leave horses in stalls or blankets on warm spring days broke my heart The owner of said barn would have to buy food & ask another boarder to clean turn out Then would tack amount onto said persons board I've done Rough board rotations that worked out ok but again some wouldn't show for their shift You end up doing work I felt bad for alot of horses in this situation So I ended up leaving those barn going to Full board barns & offering my services to work off said board That always worked out for me anyway Seeing when I wasn't at my FT job I was always at the barn anyway It always help lower my bill. The owners liked it becouse I'm a neat freak lol

You don't make money in boarding its the lessons or training offered is where money's made Unless you got a top of line facility charging over 1,000 a mo Hear in Central Florida the prices have increased in last 2 yrs you could board at a small facility for 200.00 -400.00 a mo now those are up to over 600.00 The big facilities are asking 900.00 & up Pasture board used to be 85.00- 200.00 Now I've seen it up to 500.00 it's insane Hay like cheap a round bale of coastal used to be 45.00-75.00 now over 100.00 square bales of alpha or round peanut hay are up 120.00 & up Shavings are 5.00 10.00 depending on where you go or buy it A truck load of shavings over 300.00 A bag of grain depending on what type 20.00 & over good grains 30.00 for a bag The prices have gone up drastically Hear in Central Florida anyway

Dang $50 for a round bale? Cheap poor quality crap is $100 here, anything decent is 150-175 a bale. Squares are between 20-30$ a bale.
