"Today a young man on acid realized that all matter is merely energy condensed to a slow vibration, that we are all one consciousness experiencing itself subjectively, there is no such thing as death, life is only a dream, and we are the imagination of ourselves. Here's Tom with the Weather." Wonderful quote, Mr Hicks.

TheWinterShadow It's fantastic; they utilize music as a mode of carrying emotion and they've managed to convey a multitude of different emotions ranging from happiness to the other end of the spectrum. It would surprised me if this dialog wasn't opened by BOC because their music has an amazing ability to catalyze spectacular reactions. It's probably more subjective than anything but I've managed to connect with BOC emotionally and reflectively than I have with any other artist. Bonobo has been another good one but BOC has the ability to produce nostalgia inducing sounds that trump most other attempts at recreating this (that I've heard thus far.) Perhaps it's because this music contains no ego that people feel inclined to submit their own conversations amidst the atmosphere birthed by the sounds of BOC. It's almost like the tracks themselves are canvases and are thus filled by our conversation. It's fascinating to say the least.
@TheWinterShadow
@TheWinterShadow 9 жыл бұрын
"this music contains no ego". Well said! In this music no one is putting down another to self elevate or to self proclaim. One can apply the sound, according to their own interpretation. BoC as you mentioned, offer the canvases.

This might be my all-time favorite BoC song, which is a lot to say. It's interesting how it both renders everything around you insignificant and, at the same time, connects you to the world on a higher plane of existence. It's like the world doesn't matter anymore, but at the same time it matters all the more. To me, mundane preoccupations cease to exist, yet the little things, those vestiges of what the world was like when I was a kid (a far simpler, more pristine place), suddenly pop up. You don't listen to this and think about the World Cup or the midterm elections or the next iPhone: you think about the more timeless features of our planet, those that you were curious about when you were a child. That's what this song does to me anyway, not that anybody else should care. Something that makes it even more awesome (to me, anyway) is that, apparently, one of the drum loops in this song was taken from Strawberry Fields Forever, my favorite Beatles song, which aptly enough also touches on connecting with existence on different planes ("I mean it must be high or low...").[/tl;dr]

Close my eyes... In the school bus in the middle 70s. Sitting near a girl I had the biggest crush on in junior high. I can smell the diesel fumes while watching the town roll by outside the windows that were slid down. I felt present with the world while listening to the AM hits piped through the speakers.

The fact this was uploaded in 2006 (12 years ago) makes this even more nostalgic EDIT 10/29/18: I wanted to mention the breathy atmosphere reminds me of fall/autumn when the wind is blowing, leaves are falling, it's chilly out and having a coffee or tea looking out the window to see the bustling city streets outside.

Why does their music take me back to 1978? I swear, it's like it resonnates with a part of my childhood; when life seemed to be both still... full of hope and a possibility that we were all part of something more.

I feel exactly the same. Their music helps a little bit to feel unconcerned for a moment, to remember those winter days with blue sky and sun above when I was a child. This song was in my head all day long when I was at Mont Blanc (Chamonix). It remembers me how it was good to be ignorant of all I know today.

Eric Forcier You mean, the days before the artificial construct we live in today took hold? Something is out of sorts these days, as if everything has become a mere facsimile of what was and somehow, in someway, an overlay was inserted into the mix with new patterns which lack something organic. I remember those winter days of sky and sun you speak of. Back then, the cold air was crisp, tears were salty and blood smelled like copper. The sound of crunching snow with each footstep, wood burning in the distance and a clarity where time felt like a progressive linear movement towards a better tomorrow.

So funny to see that you feel this way too. When I first heard the music of BoC I felt like I was immedeately re-living the late 70's, my very early childhood. Indeed there was another and much more 'real', playful, hopeful, and alive energy present in society and in the collective human mind back then. An energy that has since faded away along with the bloom of electronics, artificial entertainment, disconnection from nature and isolation from our community. People are depressed and lonely now, like never before, and the musical creativity of the 60's, 70's and 80's is long gone.
@johnathanmphoto
@johnathanmphoto 9 жыл бұрын
I was born in 1972, so yes, that would be the same for myself. I think our generation literally landed here at a very pivotal time in human evolution, that is, a bridging if you will between the analog and digital age, a singularity of the duality and with it, yes... We understand the warmth of vinyl records, the smell of rubber erasers, lead pencils, carbon paper tests, the Sun being yellow (not white) and skies blue (not filled with chemtrails). The collective human mind was infiltrated and sadly, it was because there were so many who thought that the 60's were about freedom and conscious awareness, never realizing that the revolution wasn't being televised, but instead, propagandized and subverted by the next best thing... the digital age; replete with all of the materialism, corporatism and eventually, fascism, so that the future (now?) would become a synthetic facsimile, with plastic food and goods and services with such a short shelf life and even shorter planned obsolescence. No, if I could only go back in time, just for a week, I think I would take it back to 1977 or 78. Where music like this was something that was a background mood setter to programming on PBS, shows like Nova or In Search Of; and when music like Jarre's Oxygene IV was activating similar changes in our molecular level. The crying Indian wasn't regarded enough, Kaufman was way too complex and people were being divided socioeconomically more than ever as failed programs were implemented (by design) to create the greater imbalances we have today. Aspartame, derrivatives, price fixing, deflationary rates... yeah, 1978 is probably where the timestream was screwed up, but you could still buy an analog synthesizer like Wendy Carlos used to do the Tron soundtrack, could be had... along with Moog/Theremin devices and even making your own music with parts from the local Radio Shack. So thank you Boards of Canada, you made me a Kid for Today! :)

This song brings back memories- I can't say for certain if the memories are real, but I'm so relaxed I just go with it.

BOC did a beautiful thing without knowing they did beautiful things. This in itself is a beautiful thing. Thank you, BOC, for the beautiful sound of things.

I read on some upload of this song (might be this one and I just can't find the comment again) that someone listened to this song on the last day they were 17, the last day they were still legally a kid, so I'd like to report I'm here doing that very thing now. It's 9:35 pm, I almost forgot but I'm glad I didn't. Of course I knew about this song for a while before this, it's amazing. Just wanted to say thanks for the idea.

I was a kid. I'll be a kid for today. And I will be a kid for tomorrow, and always. Little fluffy clouds and this song go together!

Couldn't of said it better myself.. their effect is so... almost eerie such a positive way. They take you on an odd, satisfying mind trip.

I live in Canada, and I was raised very close to army base. CFB Borden, the base was a training base, I remember lazy depressing sunday afternoons playing by in the park, or by the river. I remember hearing the drone of airplanes flying around the base. The ambient sound in the background of this song sounds like the drone of a plane... This song brings me back to those depressingly sunny summer sunday afternoons, hearing the drone of a plane somewhere in the distance!

@JayDee98765 To put it simply... Some of the greatest moments in my life were when I was walking in the forest near my home, completely alone, listening to this song. Other than that... I really couldn't put my feelings for Boards of Canada into words. Which kind of makes sense, given their style of music.

Wow, I was just about to write almost the exact same thing. A lot of people don't seem to realize that you don't use psychedelics to "escape" your life. If you have any anxieties, they would become much more prevalent on mushrooms, and for a while you wouldn't be doing so well. It isn't like heroin or pot, you don't take it to "feel good" - you take it if you want to learn about yourself, grow as a person, and understand life. At least, I find that it's always meaningful and educational.
