Personally, I believe the way you handled that was admirable. Also at 1 minute into the video, she nearly gets thrown off the back and would have gone in between the boat and the key heading.

do not tar and feather all of us who hire with the same brush been going 7 years never caused any damage to another boat or hit one but i do agree that was very bad and clueless i have seen private hit hire so lets not be too quick to judge he handled it very well i would have gone a bit more crazy lol

I don’t think he is tar and feathering anyone. Just posting a video of an incident.

Paul, may I suggest that you insist that the repairs are carried out by a yard of your choice, that the owner's insurance company coughs up rather than the owners absorbing the costs themselves. The crew in a dress suggests that the hirers are not remotely boat minded.

Are you referring to the hire boat lady in a dress or the camera boat lady in a dress or both?

Was up on the Broads rowing a few weeks ago, heard there were a lot of first timers taking boats out, this is a classic case of thinking you moor a boat like parking a car, great to see the rangers take over before anyone got hurt.

Just imagine if all you got was about ten minutes training before driving a car. If they just told you the controls and sent you on your with ‘don’t forget to drive on the left’ there would be accidents everywhere.

Fair play for keeping your cool, So this sort of video proves this 1hr training is not worth a jot, same as some people can drive instantly and some need 300 lessons. We were at Richardsons last year and a boat on its training run broke the quay boards he hit them that hard/quick and he was still let out! We were there in Sep 2021and it was horrible got out of the boat yard and ran South as quick as possible lol. We have been coming to the Broads from about 1996 and we both hold ICC's and love it there and our kids do to but the North is just bumper cars when its busy

I know this is a few years old now, but maybe boatyards should only hire certain boats to first timers. The broads is meant to be enjoyed by all, experienced and non experienced.

Sadly, that's why I sold my boat on the Norfolk Broads. The amateur boat hirers cause too much damage.

Totally agree. The hire companies are total rwat@ as they don't give a dame about others.

I can't believe that the hire companies allow hirers to pilot such large craft with little tuition.

That yard told me they sent out over 80, yes 8 0 ,,, boats that day and tgey said they all had " full tuition ," yet i found outvthey only had 4 staff doing it. Work that out.!!

Unbelievably bad. However, it may have been his first time mooring such a big high windage boat, possibly even his first time hiring, so a difficult one to call. That said, he should have been told by the Richo`s staff to always try to moor up while steering from the top, that way, he (or she) can hear people giving directions. Clearly, it`s not advisable to do a first time hire on such a boat, as in windy conditions, they are very easy to get taken, which looked like what was happening at times.
@lovelifeloveboat
@lovelifeloveboat 3 жыл бұрын
Neil, surely that is the problem, it is probably their first time, and even if it is their tenth time, both the hire company (Who have liability for damage caused by their vessel) and the hirer/skipper (Who has legal responsibility to ensure the safety of the public and his or other vessels and property) are to blame. The company must ensure a concise and competent handover and if the hirer is not confident he must not sign the release form which then passes the liability for safety on to him. You know yourself, that since you began hiring, the standard of handovers generally has fallen as the rush to get the handovers completed increases!! Gav

How this can happen up on The Bure, here, with virtually no tide or wind - by the looks of it, is beyond me. There was lots of space to pull in, too. All you have to do is gently put the helm on the quay, and manoeuvre from there!
@AndyBanner
@AndyBanner 3 жыл бұрын
Where was the crew of that hire boat initially? Never did we allow our crew to act as passengers during mooring and casting off. Of course, you can't control behaviour once they've left the yard and I don't hold with people blaming the yard as they have no idea what tuition has been given but I am lead to believe that nobody leaves Ricos without a good handover. And nobody leaves without a lifejacket either and these were conspicuous by their absence too.

I've only just seen this and I have to say regarding the boat 'Moon Enterprise' if they were first timers ,that would not be an easy boat to manoeuvre, this I know because we had this boat 2 years ago ,both of us in our mid 70s, my 25th boat onthe broads. We managed okay ,but from the lower helm I can see it could be difficult. The top helm much easier. Also thrusters bow and stern should have made life easier if they'd used them. Nice boat but not first timers.

I went on the broads when the average IQ was over 100. Never came close to crashing and mooring was very easy, and I was on my own. Now it seems the dad of the family wants to drive, fucking hilarious.

When watching things like this makes me realise why these companies charge so much for boat hire. . It's crazy the amount of people who just do not have a clue and the lack of respect ,it actually makes me mad lol.... I have been going on boating holidays for years and never caused damage.
@ncsl
@ncsl 11 ай бұрын
Not all hirers cause damage or can not handle a boat.. But when thus happens to someone who has spent 60k on their own boat or 6k, then a lot more respect should be given to the person whose boat has been damaged by them. Thus twat didn't even get off the boat to speak to me or apologise . After this I gave up boating after 25+ years of boat ownership. The hire industry and the Broads Authority need a major shake-up and take responsibility to the owners .

The last time I was on a boat was a week on a narrowboat. We weren't perfect, briefly got hung up on a cill at one point and ended up losing 25 pounds of our deposit because we slightly bent the rudder mount. We did see a family in a 70 footer who really had no idea though. At the end of the week we saw them again, and the bow was stove in. I mean both sides had foot wide dents that were at least 1.5 inches deep. This is in a hull made of 10mm steel! We never saw them able to enter a lock without bouncing hard on the side. Dodgem cars on the water!

With handovers mostly being done 'contact free; by watch a video and here are the keys, the pst 18 months have been awful for boat damage. Hire a boat in the EU or Ireland = CEVNI and approx 3/4 day to hand over if you dont have a certificate of competence. Broads 30mins if you are extremely lucky!

Thank GOD we are nowhere near as bad as the ESSEX crowd! I find your post both offensive and ignorant, tarring people from Manchester with such a comment. We have been on the broads many times and not once had any disregard for fellow boaters or hit a boat.

Well for all of the comments below, I think they did well. They did nothing in a rush which is half the secret, and to end up by the water and an electric point , well win win. They did not hit the little boat. Knowing the mooring well, I dont think I would have left my pride and joy of a rowing boat there in the first place.
