Nick, you could have paid a crew member to to help you sail it to a marina in Mexico (or just pay someone to sail it down there for you) or up in the northside of the Sea of Cortez in Puerto Penasco (where Delos just did their re-fit) where they can do haul outs and work at the marina and then just leave it down there on the hard, while Megan is back home with family getting her eye issue resolved. Then do your refit down there, especially where labor is cheap, trades are cheap, parts still available by shipment within a reasonable time period and condos are cheap to rent and stay in while you refit the boat. Then, once Megan recovers, she can come down together with you or meet you down there while you are overseeing the refit.

The yard has the launching, hauling, and storage of boats of all sizes figured out. I do not know if there is anything like it in southern California. I'm sure you tried everything. Hey Guys, so sorry to hear that another cat fell through and that Megan has to deal wth ongoing cancer issues. As you said, the cancer comes first, but a possible solution to the boat issue is to buy a nice, large monohull that you can dock anywhere, which cost much less to dock and haul out. For me, sailing is sailing and not being pressed for time, I don't care how long it takes as long as I can be out on the water. Yes, the health comes first. Without that, what is sailing anyway? It's just a boat.

A boat is just a toy. Your perspective is spot on. We all love an adventure, boating, sun and water. But in the end, your loved ones are what truly matter most. They are not replaceable. A boat, house, car, etc. are replaceable! I have been treating precancerous spots on my face. I fully understand the gravity of the situation. Hope you have a speedy and successful recovery. Keep your heads high and hearts full for what truly matters most in life - love!

So sorry to hear about the health issue and boat. I also had basal cell cancer on my lower eyelid about two years ago. An excellent eyelid skin cancer specialist worked on me here in South Florida, and I (eye) recovered well. I hope your procedure goes (went) well as you read this. By the way, have you researched any boats for sale here in Florida? It appears to me that there are many marinas that cater to multi-hulls and have space (Sunset Bay Marina & Anchorage in Stuart, FL being one of them). Wishing you both well.

About a year ago I met a young couple who were looking into buying a older cat. They were walking around the marina with their kids and were so excited about getting on the water. First boat mind you. As I went to bed that night they were on my mind and I realized I should have gave some advice. Next morning I went back to the marina and sure enough I ran into them again. I said to them, one thing you may want to consider before buying is to make sure you have a place to keep your boat for a while at least. Just in case you need some time to do some repairs and maybe get some lessons in sailing a huge cat. They both looked at me like I had lost my mind. Lol, they said, nope, we are taking off as soon as we get the deal done. I wished them luck and safe travels but always wondered how they did. You guys are wise and certainly did the right thing. Best of luck on your health issues. Looking forward to seeing your perfect boat when it comes.

Sorry for the continued setbacks. Was putting the boat on the hard an option? I know that could get quite expensive compared to a mooring. In any event, take care of Megan, have some fun, and post a video when you feel like it.

Meg, first I want to wish you the best. I wanted share my same experience of backing out of buying a boat for exactly the same reason....I.E. too difficult to find places to moor the boat, in Florida! I had placed a deposit on Sailing Dauntless last year, checked the boat out and absolutely loved it. The family were awesome and great people to work with. I felt really bad backing out of the deal solely due to the realizing how difficult it is to moor the boat somewhere in FL. As I was a first time buyer, this issue (shortage of available space for cats) really scared me off. Thank you for all your entertaining and informative videos and I hope you find the perfect boat.

Hello OKellys, thank you for this channel. You guys have a great attitude about this whole ordeal. It’s nice to hear a calm voice put things in the proper perspective. Immature people will keep a cool head if they see a mature person respond appropriately. You gave the right response. Lastly, I’m in the preparation stage of buying my boat. Once I’m ready I would love to have your experience by my side. Right now while I’m preparing I’m also still waffling between a monohull and a catamaran. When I’m ready financially and have stop waffling I will reach out to you.

I can’t believe the saga of finding a boat continues, but like you said, it’s really a first world problem, as frustrating as it may be. Also, just this week I discovered I have basal cell cancer growth on the back of my leg. Because I’ve been following Megan’s journey it was a lot less jarring for me because I had more info than I would’ve had otherwise. So - thank you for sharing such personal info!

I totally love you guys as well as the other cruiser adventurers. The only issue I have is all of you at pretty much the same time sold your boats and are either looking for a boat or waiting on the boat to be built. Gone with Wynns, Ruby Rose, Tula's Endless Summer and you guys. Jeez.......It's a good thing I can go back and watch the old vids cuz the stress you guy through doesn't give me the escape that I crave live vicariously through you. I hope guys get back on the water soon though!!

Hi O'Kelly’s, I’ve been watching your channel for years and have been looking forward to the video when you actually have your next boat. Keep your spirit. You have everything in correct perspective. Health is number 1. The boat issue will work out in the end. I had a similar experience buying a catamaran. I live in a water front community with 3 marinas. In the summer of 2017 a friend turning 80 decided to sell the Seawind Catamaran I always wanted to me. His boat had been on the hard for 2 years. He had also paid his marina in the water slip through November. I had the boat surveyed and a sea trial then wrote a contract to buy with the condition I could take over his slip. The marina owner even offered a good price for winter storage on the hard. I bought insurance, completed the purchase and suddenly the marina owner changed his mind about both the water slip and the winter storage. I had nowhere to keep the boat. As the slip usage was in the contract I could have probably still backed out but I really always wanted that boat. I had to immediately remove it from the marina and had no choice but to anchor it in the nearest weather safe cove and wondered what I am to do now? I’ve really messed up. I went to all the local marinas but none had slips empty and large enough for me. I decided to buy a large, very heavy pyramid anchor and kind of create my own mooring system. I figured if it was ok for me to anchor it where it was then why wouldn’t the pyramid anchor be ok? My insurance company had no issue with it. There was however, also a marina directly in front of my house that was mostly very small boats that people have for the weekends. Certainly there was no space long or wide enough for me there. A few days later as I sat on my porch looking at those small boats in that marina it came to me. They have a place for my boat. They just don’t know it. I could visualize placing my boat at the end of one of their floating docks for the very small 25’ boats. I went to one of the owners and she said no I don’t think that can work but she agreed I should talk to her husband about it. He said sure if you can make it work go ahead. I constructed some unusual fender contraptions to keep the boat from any damage in any weather that could come and created my own new slip in their marina. They like the extra annual slip money too. My boat has been there successfully for almost 6 years now. There have been a couple very violent storms with 60+ knot winds with everything fine. I sail as often as I can and will soon leave for extended travels to far away destinations. So just when I thought things were at their worst, it all still worked out fine. The owner of the marina who changed his mind about me keeping the boat in his marina now has to see he did me a favor as my boat sits in front of my home. I’m sure everything will work out for you too.

Way to put into perspective!

Wishing the best outcomes for Megan. This video really hit home. We are currently scheduled to do a sea trial, survey, and rig inspection on our first sailboat in 10 days. Hopefully we will find it easier. She a 44’ foot monohull in sitting in Anacortes. We have found there are a hundred different factors that must somehow align to make this crazy dream come true. From work schedules, to boat issues, to health insurance, to slip availability, to rigger availability, to weather, to the tax man, equipment availability, custom and immigration issues, and on, and on, and on. Anyone one of these issues could derail the project. It will be a miracle if we are able to pull it off. And yes, the cash register is dinging very loudly. 😬

Boat life can be a real roller coaster, wishing you all the best getting back on the water! The amazing moments when our health, finances, weather, boat and crew all work out just right is what we do it for.

Hopefully you get a positive and final outcome to your health issue. My Mum just went through a very similar issue including a couple of surgeries and is now on the other side of that mountain.
