Sailing Yacht A is ‘sail assisted’ meaning she cannot sail without engines hence the range numbers mentioned in the video.

Maybe if S/Y A was a little bigger the guy in the 6 meter boat would have seen it.

A is such an enigmatic yacht. There is very little info about her, and the interior is not easy to imagine. Would love to learn more about her layout.

My son, who works on a 200’ sailing boat, is shortly to leave Palma heading for Cairnes Australia. They have to go via Cape of Good Hope as their air draft is over 80m. The Suez canal’s air draft is approx 70m. Panama is even less!

Unpopular opinion but I think S/Y _A_ looks cool. Reminds me of a 17th century galleon.

You know when you're teaching someone to drive or with someone who just got their license and you're in an empty parking lot for driving practice and you say "Just drive around anywhere. All you have to do is not hit that one pole," and then they end up hitting that one pole? That's the guy in the little sailboat.

Forgive me if this is a silly question but how can a sailing yacht have a maximum range? Surely if there is wind it can go forever? I'm presuming this range is set based on other factors other than fuel because it has sails but some clarity would be really appreciated! Thanks.

Another interesting video, thanks for posting. I actually just worked out an agreement in the past week or two, to use _"A"_ as the quasi-rendezvous point for a meetup that a friend and I only do every year or so. We grew up together, he works around 6.5k miles (8.0k km) away, and we can turn pretty much any point on earth into a reasonable place to go. So I determined I'd locate A and just try to view it from some overlook where ever it happens to be by then. Perhaps I could even charter a small boat to circle it depending on where it is. Actually if you have any advice for impromptu yacht spotting, I'd very much appreciate it. I'm planning on knocking out a list of vessels including; Venus, Madame Gu, Octopus, Wedge Too, and perhaps even Lady Moura if the TSA will let me pack enough eye-bleach for the journey over there. I've done the same with land-based architecture but obviously those are static so it's quite a lot easier. I'll digress. Anyway, hopefully the incident was all handled quite amicably. I get that it's an annoying incident but some billionaires can be some of the most forgiving people on earth when it comes to honest mistakes and errors.

This is why when you operate a small sail boat, you need to know how to sail without depending on auxiliary power and if you don't, stay away from other vessels until you've learned. Unfortunately, when an outboard motor is an option, people often forgo learning how to tack and jibe properly.

I just read up on Sailing Yacht A a few days ago! This video was a delightful surprise! Question: are bigger ships or smaller boats more likely to be crashed into? Bigger ships are easier to see, but smaller ones have less to hit.

How do you calculate range on a sailboat? Does it need to run generators at all times so you calculate generator hours and hull speed?

This could have been one of your 5 minute Friday vids since it was under 5 minutes. A first!Lol! I should think a 3 masted schooner might need that full crew to handle the sails and sheets full time. That's almost as big as the navy vessel I was on back in the day. I'd love to get a peek inside that one. Maybe we can get Aquaholic to do a tour. Lol

It has been sat outside my window for the past week - Douglas, Isle of Man. Hard to get a true scale of it's size - but it dwarfs the local ferry.

Range of 5500nm... it’s a sailboat right? Or are the masts and sails just for show and to assist with propulsion? I’m sure it’s time at sea is also set with its fuel and generator run time. I don’t see this thing producing its own power while under sail using its prop(s) as hydro generators.

I have an idea for a video. You could give the detail differences between two comparable motor yachts. One suggestion is Bennettis IJE compared to Andromeda. What features does one have that the other doesn't have. Another comparison is Golden Yacht's Opari compared to Bennettis IJE. Another is Bennetti's Luminosity compared to Andromeda, & IJE too. I mean all 3 compared to each other.

We had a similar situation once; we were out on a little boat with an inexperienced friend driving it while we were going straight for a 30 meter yacht. I was seated on the front of the boat thinking; "I don't have to say anything, there is no way he doesn't see this massive boat"...

Although you might wonder how they could have missed a thing that's this size, It can never have been a truly HUGE problem.

For you Brits, Sailing Yacht A has a larger displacement than the WW II Town-class light cruiser HMS Belfast (presently a museum ship on the Thames River in London) or the York-class heavy cruiser HMS Exeter that had a run in with the Admiral Graf Spee in teh Battle of the River Plate.

That range has to be using fuel only? If it's a sailing ship then shouldn't the range basically be unlimited.

It's just that huge that any boat under 30ft is pulled by gravitational force. How much would the touch up be for a scratch running down the side of A. Sale price for the small boat wouldn't cover the cost of the paint after getting the color matched.

The only reason I carry insurance. Not for my boat but in case something like this happens to me. Engine failures do happen and always at the most inconvenient time.

Saw M/Y A in San Juan, PR, several years ago. Good lord is that thing ugly. Gonna take a really special buyer to get it sold. I didn't think the owner could commission an uglier boat, but then S/Y A was revealed.
